If a swing looks better on video than what the results would indicate, what are the likely causes?

Man, I don’t know what you’re looking for. Everyone’s goal in golf is to make their good swing every time. The entire point of golf is to practice enough that you make your good swings more often and your bad swings less bad.

if you want to make less bad swings, practice more? This isn’t that complicated.

The constant advice in this forum is that swings are remarkably consistent and that your good shots and bad shots will have almost identical swings. So which one is it?

These two are not mutually exclusive. The whole good swing vs bad swing narrative should really be "good result vs bad result" because the look of the swings will be extremely similar.

Bingo. In this case we have not established if the good results are due to a mechanically superior swing or if he just did a better job compensating when there is no pressure. On video to the amateur eye they will look similar. Not only that, even two shots in a row on the range is enough to get into a small groove. Second one of the tee after sending on OB is always better

A mechanically sound swing has a better chance of getting consistently good results than an unsound swing. But there are a million things that can be a tiny bit off, things that are essentially invisible to even high-speed video, that will get you a poor result from a "pretty" swing. With an "ugly" swing, there are probably ten million things that can go wrong.

I don't think you are understanding what people mean by that. I don't think the claim is that your good and bad swings look the same (or swings with good results vs ones with bad). It is that you still have the same fundamental swing, even when one or a few pieces of it get out of whack and you hit a bad shot. I know that I can see the difference between a good swing and a bad swing when I film myself. Going back to your original question, it isn't that your swing is under-performing, it is that you are not repeating your good swing often enough. And, the repeatability of your swing also heavily relies on how good your fundamentals are.

The OP either hasn’t accepted the fact the human body is not a mechanically precise machine that can produce the exact same movement of every part every time. Hell Iron Byron will not drop ball after ball literally on top of each other so that should end all the perfect swing crap. This guy is either jerking you all off or he is to afraid to just go play and accept that GOLF will happen. Since he won’t post a video I’m inclined to believe he knows his swing has problems but won’t admit it to himself. Lots of guys and girls with less than perfect swing making lots of money playing professionally. Since he probably ain’t one of them he’s decided that perfection must be the answer. That or he’s just jerking you.

More likely than not, you just think it looks better than it really is and are mistaking good results as a different swing, when in reality the underlying fault is still there (just managed better). No one really goes from tour swing to a 10. The only other possibility IMO is if your "good" swing videos are taken on the range after lots of balls hit, exaggeration drills, etc. Old swing faults showing their face under pressure isn't an unexplained phenomenon, old habits die hard.

I used to get lots of comments on how good my swing looked and that it was a shame I didn't get better results. Now I look like I'm chopping down a tree and play pretty well. As many have mentioned, be results driven.
