Wet Set - Dry Set

How many of you folks have a single set for firm conditions, wedges especially, wherein their grinds and bounce are specialized for hard turf, and on the flipside, also have a high bounce set of wedges/irons for wet soggy conditions?? I'm certainly leaning towards having two personal wedge sets at the very least, one high bounce/full grind and the other mid-low, with trailing sole relief.

Soggy weather: hit the ball first... don't come in too steep. (Could be a problem if you're a digger).

That's just it, I am pretty steep. I'm usually fine but partial shots are the kicker, and these are where the extra bounce really comes in handy.Surely, you jest!?!?

I already own several sets, but my logic was about making the 2nd, 3rd, or whatever set useful for certain occasions, and in this case, turf conditions. It would make things easier, parting with 1 set if 2 or more sets were similar in that regard. I mean let's be honest, 99% of use ho's who claim to have a "backup" bag will never really make use of it anyhow, so having one that's constructed opposite of your normal gamers would make sense to me. At least that way, you'd have a real reason to pull it out of storage and put it back in rotation some days.

I have a lob wedge with 14* of bounce and a wider sole that gets in the bag when it’s raining.

when it’s dry I swap to a thinner soled 7* bounce.

Now that's what I'm talking about!!! Not to discourage naysayers, but let's all just assume money is no object, and assume a ho will be a ho, lol.

 

What would really be cool would be to have an identical set, but bend all the irons 4* weak, increasing the bounce, and play them all one iron shorter, possibly -.5". Maybe get crazy and stamp a new "iron" number on the sole to stay aware of the new loft. 4 becomes your 5, 5 your 6 and so on.

Seems pretty obvious to me. When I was playing Vokeys, I carried F grind for soft conditions, S grind for firm. Now you could go D and M with the same effect. I’m playing Mizuno wedges now, it’s simple high & low bounce options. And it’s not just wedges; why wouldn’t you have a “carry” driver setup and a “roll out” setup? And no way I’m taking a carbon putter out on dewy or sandy greens.

I’ll go a step further, and suggest a different bag for every season (or circumstance). It should extend the life for all your clubs to rotate between 3-4 sets. These days, it’s stronger lofts in the winter to get the same carry, wider soles too (I go i200). Wooded courses in the Fall should be cast clubs only (you won’t catch me punching out amid the acorns with soft forged MBs). Better get comfortable with a firm putter for slow greens, and a softer, deeper milling or insert putter for when it’s fast and smooth. Might as well carry two drivers too, one high draw and one power fade. And anytime I’m wearing spikeless shoes, I need to go down a flex since I don’t leverage the ground the same way. (...tell me when I’ve gone too far...have I gone too far?)

If money was no object for a wet set:

woods and hybrids that maximize carry - since rollout will be minimal

irons - any Pings with their new hydro pearl finish

wedges - Ping Glide 3.0s with hydro pearl finish, either the WS or the Eye 2 grind if you want something more versatile (I already have the WS in my 54 and Eye 2 in 58 for max versatility)

Gap , sand and lob, I have bounce options on all for different courses and sand/ground conditions. How can you not?

OK, I went too far. I’m actually not trolling, I really do own 4 sets one for each season. And would very quickly take my best carry woods setup, I200s and Glide 2.0, and $30 putter out for soft, wet or cold, wintry conditions. And I really did buy a Rogue Draw 13.5° driver this week, and consider bagging it with a 9.5 or 10.5 driver set to fade.

So I FULLY SUPPORT getting higher bounce wedges for soft and wet condition. Like I said, S to F (if you’re mostly square) or M to D (if you manipulate the face) grinds would flow nicely with this idea.

I have one putter with a finish that is not allowed to touch greens that have just had fertilizer applied or lots of sand if they've been top dressed. Otherwise, same clubs all the time unless they are benched for some other reason. I guess I can see the wedge thing - some of the pros change stuff up for the conditions at The Open Championship, makes sense to me if it matters to someone. I don't do it.
