Pebble Beach - Walking On

Recommended Posts

Hey all

Planning a pebble beach trip in September. It looks to be no issue to book tee times for all the other courses in the area without staying at the Pebble Beach Lodge (and paying the extremely high prices).

The only one that is tough is Pebble itself.

What's your thoughts on getting out by calling ahead 24 hours and trying to get an actual tee time the day before? This would be for 2 golfers. We would be pretty flexible for any of the 6 days there. Also, we have heard that AirBNBs inside 17 mile drive can book for guests 30 days out. Is this accurate? Do you have to play with the owner of the house?

Thanks!

I was there in September a year before last and called right at 8AM and got the last single spot available.

In normal times a twosome would probably be tough, with the Covid-19 situation who knows. Doesn't hurt to try.

Good point about GTF. Pace of play at Pebble is slow. Assume a 5-hour round.

I got the last GTF of the day and we teed of on 18 just as the sun was about to hit the horizon. The sun was down when we holed out.

My experience with Pebble Beach (as of three years ago) is if you call for a tee-time they first ask you where you're staying. If you say Pebble Beach Lodge, Inn at Spanish Bay (I think there is a third also) they will give you a time (they can confirm the hotel bookings). If you're not staying at their property the standard answer is "we'll put you on the wait list". Maybe on a rainy day they will fit a walk-up in somewhere but its a risk. I know places like Pebble, Pinehurst, other premiere resorts are usually booked solid. Last time I went it started off drizzly at around 10am (cleared off by about the 4th hole) they were booked solid. Maybe I've been lucky but every time I go to a top location it was expensive but good value if that makes sense. I get the full package - stay on site, meal plan, the works. Usually the elite places really bend over backwards to please. I've also played $150 courses that were overpriced (and certainly not memorable).

What is amazing to me is how many people finish after twilight. Ill be having dinner with my wife outside at the bench in full on darkness and there will still be caddies in carts with the lights on trying to help groups finish. Finishing 18 in pitch black is not the way I want to play it. Sunset would be cool though.

The first few times I played PB the pace of play was atrocious and 5+, almost 6 hours. The last two times this has not been the case however. One of those times we were first off and played in 3:30 but that's not fair to count. The other time though was mid-morning and we still finished in 4:05 or so. The other twosome was complaining about how they were being pushed to play too fast. Still felt slow to me. I can certainly live with 4:05 though.

As for getting twosome on at that time, even with a 6 day window, odds are not good. It might work but I certainly wouldn't depend on it. I find it highly unlikely there's any Air BnB that can book people 30 days in advance as well but there may be something happening where they can leverage local contacts. I certainly don't know of a way other than staying at the resorts and, given their significant premium, I don't think it would make sense for Pebble to allow it.

A couple of years ago I did that - I called 24 hrs before and Praise God a 4some had cancelled so we got the 1st tee time on a Sunday AM.

Is it possible? Absolutely, especially in these times.

Good luck - I know you'll love the course.

My set-up:

Driver - Ping G430 MAX with HZRDUS Black Smoke

3 Wood - Ping G430

Hybrid - Rocketballz 3 Hybrid
Irons - Cobra King Tour irons

Wedges - Ping Glide 4  50* / 54* / 58*
Putter - Bettinardi Queen Bee #6
Shoes - Ecco Hybrid
Ball - Maxfli Tour X

  • 5 weeks later...

I decided to fly out on a whim next week. Times are easy to come by right now. Playing Pastiempo on Sunday then Spyglass/Spanish on Monday and Pebble on Tuesday before I head back. Not staying on property (they don’t open until Monday AM) so times on Pebble until room bookings start back up aren’t limited at the moment.

Not a bad place to travel on a whim and the weather should be decent. It's supposed to be in the mid 60's Sunday & Monday and the low 70's on Tuesday and mostly sunny. My wife and I are thinking about staying at Spanish Bay for 1 night on Saturday the 20th since we've been home for so long.

Have a great time!

Never tried for a twosome and never Tried in September. March - July I have played as a single in the past and had no trouble getting on at all. In fact most years they gave me a tee time a few days to even a week+ in advance. It sounds kind of funny, but my first time getting on a single I called for a tee time 2 weeks ahead, and they told me to try again in a few days, so I did and they were happy to give guaranteed time about 10 days out.
