Bought at The Salvation Army last week, for $1.07 with tax:

My first NEW set of clubs I ever bought!! AWESOME!! Interested in selling them?

It's quite possible. I don't think I'll ever be good enough to put them into play.....

Don't let that stop you. Put them into play and you'll surprise yourself! I promise!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Very nice Doc. The Script Toe '81 - '83 rendition of the AB's. Good luck with hitting them.

Thrifted a set (3 - PW) of those last year. Same vintage. Took them out for a spin one time. Determined they were beyond my proficiency to adequately field. Sold them off rather quickly. They were real "lookers" though. Very thin soled as I remember. Now all that's left is the remembrance of things past. And a pic or two. Such is the nature of classic clubs. They stay, they go.

I took them to the range yesterday. I didn't like them. I also picked up a set of Wilson Payne Stewart NFL autograph irons. I hit the Wilsons so good. I guess blades aren't for me.

Doc, would not let AB's be the final arbitrator of whether you can or cannot play a bladed iron. They are very demanding. I struggled to hit them well also. There are other irons that you may find suitable. I've often said (and several others) that finding the "right" shaft is as important as finding the head. Can make a MB blade entirely suitable.

Four years ago, blades were not a consideration in any way, shape, or form. Didn't have the game or swing. And one has to be "X" handicap to play them. However, a couple of "thrift store acquisitions" began to change perspectives. Long story shorter, began to zero in on a set of 1999 Hogan Apex MB blades as a maybe. Acquired a pretty rough set inexpensively to experiment with. After some time to get acquainted, found that I was hitting good shots with them. And they began to render the Ping i20's that I was playing quite disagreeable. Especially for shots from 150 and in. Corresponding to a 6 iron through E wedge.

Fast forward, the 99's have become a semi-permanent fixture in the bag. No longer have "Am I good enough to play blades?" thoughts in my head. Know that I can and have proven that to myself with good shot making. And the feel off the club face is rather extraordinary. I get the sense, when I'm swinging well that I know exactly where they're going. This is entirely singular. Someone else will have another combination that they find works well for them. Short of fittings, trackman, availability to demo, etc. etc., the quest requires no small degree of experimentation. But therein lies some of the enjoyment. Trying different implements, experimentation with different setups, play them or sell them. Moving on to the next. And doing it as inexpensively as possible, with financing generated by the flip. At least that's a hook for me. Quite independent from score.

Probably not going to find a set at a thrift store. But they can be had for decent money with prudent shopping. Stick the right shaft in them (Nippon 950's for me) and they are bloody marvelous. But if your inclination remains elsewhere, that's entirely cool as well. You are still not allowed any subtraction form score based on the implements in hand. Continue to play what you want, what brings enjoyment to you while playing at golf.

Just say'n.

I appreciate the response. Maybe I will look into some other blades and try them.

My first clubs were Nicklaus Golden Bear MacGregors ... anyone find any of them?

They were not the most forgiving as I remember.

Face cracked and flew off the three wood I recall when hitting at the range. And a head flew off one of the irons when I was playing a round.

I get lucky from time to time. I just bought another bag yesterday for $5. And it's better than the Callaway bag.

For older blades they looked about as big a blade as you could get.

If I literally didn't have a couple dozen sets I probably would have snatched them...and if I keep going in there to that Goodwill knowing me if I see them enough I will break and grab them.

I got a bunch of stuff today at various GW and it was all half off (Memorial Day sale).

Cleveland Launcher 3 wood 15* for $2.50

r580 3 wood for $3.50

Mizuno T Xoid Pro II Grain Flow Forged 4,5,6,7,8 at $1.99 a piece

Callaway X20 6,7,8 and 9 womens irons for $5.00 a piece

Sonartec 19 hybrid - uncut (no grip on it) Banzai stiff shaft $1.50 (gonna pull that shaft - I need a nice stiff flex hybrid shaft)

Got a TaylorMade Burner staff bag too - though one zipper is broke and there was no rain cover. $7.50.

I think I got something else or two, too, but I'm drawing a blank rn.

Total spent today was less than $50.00 for an okay haul.
