Blakester, those Mac's are sweet! Is it a full set of irons?

Yes. 2 iron - W. Couple of MacGregor woods and a Spalding "Rocker Cash In Putter", too. Grips are probably original. They are leather and slick as can be. Shafts are MacGregor Pro-Pel steel. The diamond shape is not recessed. It is protrudes out like a muscle-back. Here is the shaft and a pic of the set in the bag. Funny, only cover is on the 7-iron.

Those Macs look kind of unusual in that they appear to be a Recessed Weight model that is neither Colokrom or FC4000 - or am I missing something?

I think those are '59 Mac Tourney PT3's. Those had normal faces.

Blake, do the shaft bands have a "3" on them?

Kaplan indicates this is a 1958/59 model. But the Mac literature mentions copper plating which this clearly does not have. PT3 "has the Pro-Pel Action No. 3 shaft with flexible, fast action pattern for the swinger". Interpret that however you wish. Considering how relatively stiff these old Mac shafts were, probably similar to a modern R.

An overnight coke soak will remove the rust and #0000 steel wool will spruce up the heads and shafts. Those slick leather grips are salvageable. Give them a good cleaning with saddle soap. Once dry, a couple of liberal applications of Lexol leather conditioner will restore the tackiness. Its quite amazing how these old leather grips come back to life with a little TLC. I wouldn't summarily cut them off just yet.

Full set of classic Macs, nice find.

an easy way to deal with the slick leather grips and make the clubs playable -get some batting tape from a sporting goods store like dicks or academy and wrap the grips in batt tape. they will feel almost like new grips again and provide ample tac to allow you to at least try these babies out . tennis racket tape will also work but cost more and usually only comes in bright colors. with black batt tape-you hardly know its there. i did this to both my old mac irons sets so i can at least enjoy playing them.

Yes. They are stamped PT3 and shaft bands do have a 3 on them. What does that signify?

Please don't reshaft or regrip those Macs. All original gems, great playing irons as the golf gods intended them to be. Advice above on getting them into state and go and play them. Pretty big thrill to hit all original clubs like this as they would have been out of the box over half a century ago.

And don't worry about the flex! Maybe swing-weight them to get them feeling right for you, otherwise fiddle around until they feel right.

I've got some supposedly regular shafted irons which play fine. Others I choke down a little, play more club and swing a bit easier.

If they feel too stiff, tinker with some lead and ball position.

I tried to hit them years ago but the grips are so slick they are hard to hold onto. I'm not a traditionalist as much as you guys so I won't play them. My wife would love for me to get them out of the garage so if one of you guys wants to PM me I'll send you the whole bag after New Year.

I just gave a set of these PT1's to a young man at the club today, along with some nice MacGregor woods and a set of Haig Ultradyne Irons. He was thrilled. He is a 1 or 2 Hcp player, but only about 22 years old. He can't wait to give them a go this winter when he goes to AZ.

He'd never really seen anything like them. Seeing the look on his face made my day.

Member Fellaheen has said before, around here in these parts of the forum, vintage/classic can be whatever you want it to mean.

Personally, I would call the edge a classic design in terms of iconic. It's not necessarily a classic iron in terms of age, although it is over 20 years old. So I may have to reconsider. And I term vintage to mean anything the equipment forum hos on the other side aren't playing. Lol. Typically they only play the last 5 years.

The Edge are 89-early 90s.

In automobile parlance vintage is anything 25 years of age or older. By that measure I would consider the Hogan Edge to be vintage.

With golf clubs there seems to be certain eras that were representative of design trends that would span perhaps 20 years between major departures in design with the one we are currently in having started in the mid 2000's. From that perspective, anything greater than 10 years old is going to be decidedly different than clubs of today. Ergo, I would concur with Fellaheen that vintage is pretty much whatever you want it to be.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Never thought it would happen to me!! How am I explaining this to the girl friend? I have no idea. 53 golf clubs. 53 freaking clubs.

Macgregor VIP 2-10

Mizuno Grad Mp 3-9

Hogan Apex 3-E

4 Cleveland wedges

3 Titleist wedges

3 TP Mills

3 bullseyes

Some other miscellaneous

And 9 count them 9 ping putters.

And Finally a Titleist 983E

I can post more pictures if y'all want as I clean them up.

That's not fair. I'm lucky if I can find a full set of anything at all, let alone something I can use or sell. Nice day for you!
