I really don't see the point in scrambles

Recommended Posts

Most 4 man scrambles are over priced by 70 bucks compared to the normal prices of green fees . The pace is horrible . They sale you everything they can , for raffles to moligans. Then every par 3 has someone on the tee box selling you something else. It's a 250 dollar day for what? The winning prize is some worthless $30 item, when you just beat 30 plus teams. Never again for me . I'll play regular golf from here on

I live in a rural area where the scrambles don't cost near that much so I can't relate.

The ones I play are between $50-75 per person. Plus mulligans and whatever else a person wants to buy. They're a lot of fun IMO.

Scrambles where I play are simply fundraisers for the club and local groups, which I happily support.

Im all for scrambles which benefit a charity or some type of fundraiser. But a scramble which isn't for some greater cause is just useless.

For corporate outings and or at conferences, they allow people who don't get to play all at often to join in without pressure, and be a part of a team. Even a player playing poorly usually hits a putt or two, or some good shots that count toward the group's score=everyone feels good at the award dinner.

I'll make a donation and go play real golf somewhere else. It's a 6 hour round with a bunch of people that play once a year.

The last one I played in was at a company I had just started at with my new boss - $85.

They had two groups on every tee with a shotgun start, hitting from the red tees (they changed the markers to white but I have playeb the course numerous times and knew where the tees were supposed to be).

I'm not terribly long but longer than most (avg 260ish) After the third hole the other's in my group said "We'll all try to hit the fairway first and you go last and try carry the water and/or drive the green."

It was like a pissing contest at the driving range, it defiitely wasn't golf.

Just finished our 14th scramble to benefit United Way here in STL...had 29 teams...better than last year...total out of pocket for all contests, fees, etc...is around $120....skin, mulligans, etc...winner gets a dozen balls and a trophy...there were 4 skins out this year, part of the skin pot is donated immediately to United Way. We have Margarita/Bloody Mary stands on the course, free. All normal beverages and beer are free on the course also. 2 putt rule in affect and usually done in 4.5 hours to have awards, silent auctions, live auction and burger/chicken breast lunch! Great weather Saturday helped alot...all had a great time. We will make around $9500 this year in one day...economy still level and not getting as many sponsors as prior years..but still worth it.

Like everyone else said,, usually they're for charity or something. Plus it usually gives some people the chance to shoot scores they would never be able to shoot in regular stroke play. Makes it more fun for the masses.

I enjoy them but don't like it when my group wants to play it on a normal morning. Maybe I'm just competitive. Its odd, I argue for straight up play knowing I'll be in last.

I just played in two over the last two weeks. All the monies go to charities that I support so instead of just writing a check, I play in the events. If you are thinking about yourself and your game while playing these I would agree, don't play in them.

These are huge social gatherings and it's the only time a good number of the participants pull their Dunlop clubs from the garage. Not a whole lot of golf being played.

At the end you watch the "odd" foursome turn in an unbelievable score to beat everyone so that they can win a coupon for dinner or a box of balls. :russian_roulette:

There has to other golf ways to raise money. I'm so done with these scrambles. I can no longer feel ok asking my friends to play in these..

Yeah, people can put out the donation jar at the local high school basketball game, or...

I get where you are coming from, but when you sign up to play in something like a scramble, you can't really take yourself or other people very seriously. It is faux competition, after all.

I've only played in one that I actually paid for, and it was fun, but not something I would regularly pay for. I do play in 15 - 20 scrambles each year that are paid for by work and we always have a blast. It's hard to not have a good time when you enjoy your teammates and you're playing free golf. Not to mention I have won some pretty awesome prizes so far this year.

I just look at them as a fun way to donate $$, drink beer, and hit some balls. What never fails to irk me though is that the winning group is always a bunch of 30 hc hacks claiming to come in at -15.

Plus, it is kind of fun to be viewed by those around you as some kind of golf god (to my regular group I'm mediocre at best).

Here in Hawaii we have a lot of Tournaments and formats are all unique from Scrambles, to Shambles to best ball, 4 ball, 2 ball.

95% of the scrambles here are for Charities or Donations. These are fundraisers to get people to donate for a specific company or charity. These, you have to come with an open mind as people juice their handicap to win some random prize. Or people that hardly play to get out once in a while.

You cant take any of these types of tournaments to seriously and I go to either network with new business opportunities as generally there is some Manager, VP or Executive that you can slip a business card to.

As for golf with scramble these are good opportunities to try stupid crazy shots you would never try in a normal round to see if you can do it. You know those super Power draws or Fades around corners. Or trying to max out on a long drive etc.

I do have some playing partners that give up playing because of the long rounds and the constant nagging to buy stuff. But I go for the free food, free booze, sometimes hot cart girls and if we get luck some kinda good prizes that they give away.

Match/Medal Golf is exactly that

Tournaments Golf is Competitive

Fundraiser Tourneys that are scrambles are just for fun dont take it seriously

PS could be worse...... The Hawaii Food Bank does a "Fish Net" Drive where people (16+yrs or older) stand on the side of the road to collect donations...... Legit Charity. But random @SS people take advantage and have their kids (5+ yrs old This is illegal here in Hawaii BTW) stand at the corner with signs and nets trying to get cash that way..... pretty sad.... that they use their kids to pan handle

The only scrambles I play on are charity events/find raisers or work related. Otherwise, I would never play on a scramble.

I play in them for work purposes. This year we have 7 to play in. Work pays and it's a free day off from work. Plus you get to network a little while there. Costs me about 30-40 bucks with mulligans, skins and such. No big deal.

I will also play in some that my friends run. Just played in one with some wrx'ers that dscvrr runs. It was a great time with great friends. Prob the only honest one I have ever played in. We won with a score of -13. No way did we think we would win with that score.
