No new acquistions...?

Recommended Posts

I picked up a dozen items at The Golf Auction yesterday.

Mostly Penna custom and experimental clubs made at MacGregor or Penna.

I've become fascinated by the different grinds, bounces, and weights used by tour pros from the past. Instead of drivers, I'm into wedges lately. They're also more available, as players rarely switched drivers once they found one that worked.

Did anyone hear the segment on The Golf Channel in which a Texas tour player( don't remember who) mentioned seeing Charles Coody's driver, which had the leading edge of the sole plate worn thin, in a horse shoe shape, from hitting so many balls on the sweet spot? Remember that with persimmon, the goal was to hit the ball in the dead center of the face, which brought the sole plate into contact with the tee on practically every shot.

My Penna collection is beginning to rival my Wood Bros collection in total number of clubs.

Oh, you guys might like this!

Nice clubs I am sure but unless in "pristine" condition I think you did well to pass on that asking price.
I would say that they weren't in the pristine category, but they did look much better than most of the other iron sets on offer. They looked quite intimidating, especially that 2 iron as they were indeed butter knives!

It's quite shocking when you think about it; there was a set of Taylormade Tour Preferred muscle backs in excellent condition that were new last season on offer for $400! They were probably $1000 brand new! I would say that the MacGregors have done a better job of retaining value!
Did you happen to snap a picture of them? If they were "just" Mac TA forged irons, he probably wanted too much. However, if they were Mac TA 915 or 915T Stainless Steel irons, I would have negotiated with the owner until he hit his bottom line and probably bought them.
Sorry no photos. After posting I thought how that would have been a good idea if I had taken one if for nothing more than my education. I don't have any recollection of any numbers being on the blade stamping. I couldn't even tell what flex the shafts were as the bands were worn.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Nice hat MM, nothing like sporting a stylish fedora..........the irons aren't bad either.

Just in case you were wondering about them, did a quick search on Ironfinder.com. Appears they are '65 - '67 Percussion Centers with the hosel length being the determining factor for which year. For $5 they were a steal. Like Steve said above, only worth what someone is willing to pay. Have you checked eBay for comps?

This is what I was referring to in your other thread.....clubs have a way of multiplying (quickly) when one discovers how well these classic sticks play.
the first few sessions with these we're eye opening. I literally couldn't hit these irons anywhere on target for the first few shots. Than the accuracy and consistency started slowly creeping in . When you hit these solid it just flows right up your whole body; However, when the other happens it really stings :). This is where the big difference between these irons and current era irons comes into play. Irons nowadays from a company like ( callaw** let u feel in the rest) , are like one big sweet spot. The bad vs the good feel is gone, so you get no feedback anymore. They are game improving as they say,but not mechanics improving. These older clubs are mechanics improving

An interesting find on eBay this morning. (For me at least ;))

Precision II 97-X

It's rare that I find anything on offer from the manufacturer of my vintage irons. My guess would be that they were/are a component company that specialized in Ping clones as atested by the G2 look alikes above.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Yeah, 2nd Swing had a single E posted for $119.00 I tried to negotiate and the best they could do was $99 plus shipping. I got all these for $14.99 plus shipping. May need to be refinished, I'll see when it arrives.

Picking up these bad boys in a few weeks from a local seller. '61 Slazenger Hogan PT persimmon's (2-3-4) for $25 USD equiv. Will have a complete set of '61 PT's, 2w thru exploder + a backup 3W (don't want the driver - passed on one with a cracked neck last year).

Anyone know of other Hogan woods like that? Not sure what to expect as the 3W I already have, feels like a bit of a brick compared with my other persimmon's, for whatever reason... Nevertheless couldn't pass on the chance to compile a full set of '61's!

$99.00 for a Redline Equalizer??? They probably paid the previously owner $5-$10 for it!

Crazy I know but they are hard to find. If people pay it they'll keep doing it.

2nd Swing is totally market driven on their prices. Clubs in high demand will command large prices, and clubs that are not will be MUCH cheaper.

Back in the day, I was able to get $220 trade on a TiSI Tec, because it was THE hot club at the time.

When I was buying my first set of Rams, the local 2nd Swing had a set of Norman Signature Grinds on the wall behind the register, priced over $1,100. Used. In a rack in the normal display area, there was a set of Muirfield 20ths for $69.

My first set of Golden Rams (Frequency Matched) was $149 on New Years Eve, 2000. A few years later, I got a set TW276 Golden Rams for $50.

All about the demand. :)

Got that right. I didn't want to pay that much. Was patient and found 2-9 for $56.00. If you're creative in how you search you'll find them posted from people that don't know what they actually have. I really love the feel of these older clubs over my '09 xforged.

I was looking yesterday at the new Hogan line. I'm on the fence visually. Not sure they should have used the "Redline" though. They are more of a crossbreed, but the reviews so far are outstanding. Just not ready to pull the trigger on a new set of irons at that price point. I need to hit them on some turf. I do like the choice of exact lofts though.

There's a "sand iron" that was produced during that time period as well as a "special" wedge.

The SI becu was produced '88 - '90 I believe. Found one cheap over the winter. It's been in play so far this year with the Apex's. Heavy head takes some getting use to, been flying greens with it, but has a nice feel. A real spinner, ball checks up nicely. Something that's not part of my usual repertoire.
