Picked up a few MacGregor Champion 813 irons, a 4,5 & 6 for a buck each today. Plan to pair them up with the H&B signature short irons I picked up a few weeks ago till a cooler long set comes along.

Kinda good looking. I’m not familiar with these. Are they store line? Initially was guessing an across the pond model. Seemed like anything that had just his name on it wasn’t pro line or am I wrong on this assumption?

Not sure on that. Haven't found a lot of info on them. Guessing early 70s, they are a decently made club far as face, grooves and such.

Not sure when they started rounding off the soles just a touch and soften back edges a little bit. Mid to late 60’s???. Swingyard has no listing off a 813. In 67 there’s a R271 Jack Nicklaus.

Per Ironfinder, 1970 model.  I might have specs on my laptop (using tablet right now).

There's a bit of chat about these in the archives.  🙂

Maybe our Hoganista brethren will chime in...

Yeppers. 1970 model due to ribbon. But...

Weird though. Assembly number J33864 makes no sense. I have a set of 69s and 71s, but no 70s, so nothing to refer to. But all my sets from back then follow the standard serial number rules of those times.

Maybe non standard shafts, ferrules cannibalized from later model? Custom set? Something is stinky in Denmark, I know not what it is

Edit: this is messed up in so many ways. See my post a couple or so messages down the thread.

Just checked my Hogan stash…I have a set of these, however they are Slazenger’s, so would the same year, 1970, apply?

I don't know about the slazengers. Sorry.

Also, just looked, my 69s do not fit the serial number rules, but 71s do. My 69s are I38083, with apex4s, and match the ferrules in @Wham49 op. Hopefully someone else can explain pre 71 Hogan assembly number rules!

Shows what I really know lol.

are they good quality you guys?

Definitely good quality. 👍

I checked the zip file that someone posted years ago, there was no entry for these.  It has all the info that used to be in the classics section for Hogan golf, had specs for many sets.

Hogan irons tended to be pretty consistent in specs, I'll see if I have specs for sets on either side of 1970 in the Hogan timeline....

The zip file doesn't have the specs, but a spreadsheet that someone was compiling *does*.  Woo!

It doesn't paste wonderfully, but here they are.  Lie, loft, and length specs for the 1970 1+ set:

3i - 57.5º    23º    38.75

5i - 59.5º    30º    37.75

6i - 60.5º    33.5º    37.25

7i - 61.5º    36.5º    36.75

what is a zip file & where is it?

A zip file is a compressed archive file.  It allows you to take a number of files, group them all together in a single file, plus use a disk space compression algorithm to reduce the amount of drive space it takes up.  It's an easy way to send a group of files in a single file attachment.

Someone had put this together and uploaded it to GolfWRX.  Or emailed it to anyone who wanted it, I admit I don't remember the details.  I saved it to my laptop/PC back in 2016.

This particular file was put together by someone who wanted to keep all the info that Ben Hogan golf's website had, about all their previous models.  Some had specs, but most would include a pic of the back of the club, the face, and the sole.  I'll share an image below of the contents of one of the folders, and the images listed.

side note:  Some email clients don't allow you to receive file attachments with a .zip extension, because a great many trojan horses or viruses have been delivered in such a way.  Gmail is one of these that does not.

This is what the specs portion of the old Hogan site looked like.  This image was grouped with the 73-78 Apex set, but clearly mentions the 72 Apex.  🙂

I have a set of '72 Apexes, and have the PW at, I think, 50*.

I think I need to check the specs again and weaken as required.

In a different thread, I mentioned tracking down a rare Mizuno set, and as they have now turned up I thought I should post pictures.

They are based on the MS4, which was a rare US-marlet model that Payne Stewart used to win the 1999 US Open, even though they came out around 1989, and from 1990 onwards they would have been labelled MP4.

Mine are stamped Mizuno Pro Original, which means they are post 1990, and are a custom order. I have a few sets stamped "Original", but these particular ones are identical to a set I have that are based off the TP Originals that came out in the mid-eighties.

To put a long story short, I am pretty sure that these irons, and the MS4s that Payne used in the 1999 US Open, are restamped TP Originals from the mid Eighties with a chrome finish.

Also, and I can't be sure of this without seeing a set of MS4s, I think the US market model had boxed grooves, whereas the European TP Originals didn't, because these ones I just got have boxed grooves, whereas my other ones with stampings closer to the TP model don't.

Confused?

I hope so.

Anyway, I like the chrome finish on these ones I just got compared to the satin finish I have on the other set I have. The SW, which I don't have with the other set, is also pretty good.

Finally, the shaft is weird. Very odd stepping.

I also got a few old wound balatas. Got to say, I like the Titleist Professionals, but whenever I buy some, I always find several have gone out of shape. I don't find that with the Tour Balatas or Maxfli Balatas/Royal Balatas.

The 6+ degree gap between the 9i and PW is pretty interesting. I'm guessing the SW would have been 55~56 digress, which makes the large gap between the 9i and PW even more interesting.

Or were Hogan SW more lofted than other makers' sand wedges of the time?

Also, the fact that the 2i shaft length is shorter than the 5i shaft length leads me to conclude that proof readers worth their salt were as rare then as they are now.

It has an AMF Vector shaft label and AMF owned Hogan till 84 I think so maybe 8 years newer than my Apex’s. Anyways my thinking was to have the E bent down to 49 then the SW bent up to 57 and go 4 degree increments from 8 down. Haven’t had them adjusted yet. Perhaps over thought idk. Honestly I should worry more about consistent contact and a repeated swing more first but…..

Guess it’ll give me 1 less excuse.

Well.. sure enough!  Cool little plus on my $10 find today. Got some good clubs and now I know.. a Ginty as well. To top it off the bag turned out to be a Belding bushwacker to boot.

Yep, a Stan Thompson Ginty. Nice find $2!

The Ginty is supposed to be a great rescue club. I'd like to get my hands on one someday, but I've not seen any come up for sale where I live.
