Ah...see my belfry bats are doing ok, eh 🤣

I ran the 8 iron thru a quick power buff.  Shine came up easily on the stainless with green, then white compound.  Took it to work with me and hit it for 30 minutes pitching around the practice green with Callaway SuperSofts next to my 56* wedge.  Loft is surprisingly close between the two.  Grip was confidence building.

Wilson took over Hagen in the mid-40s. They’re true 1930s Hagens.  Yay!  Made arrangements for persimmons to be totally reworked today.  Just gotta get a long enough club shipping box now.

My belfrey bats are ok, they help at times 🙃 It is a lovely set...I don't understand "I'd pull the persimmon shafts and just send the heads" - the shafts are pyratone covered steel shafts. What shafts would you replace with (just curious)? As to slowing swing....that is just practice, practice, practice. Gotta admit, I've been told by every Pro who instructed me in the past few years, my normal swing speed IS slow (that's how I was first instructed).

Here are some pics of the Walter Hagen irons heads I mentioned. As you can see, weird grooving on the face. The pyratone shafts are really in perfect condition w/just the beginnings of a slit, which is why I'm looking to stablize rather than replace. The grips are in absolute mint condition w/the Walter Hagen "WH" in the end cap...don't know how old they are or even if they pre-date when Wilson incorporated the Walter Hagen clubs into their line-up.

Funny you should post them irons.  My local course has display cases with vintage clubs and these are in one.  I’ll get a pic next week at the scramble.

Congrats! For boxes, try your local golf stores or pro shops...while they might have large boxes but perhaps they also have smaller sets to send smaller groups of clubs...you can also cut down, like the boxes FedEx has to ship whole sets of clubs + bag....I'd be wary of UPS till the strike issues are settled. I've received a number of triangular boxes via USPS....Good luck

Brother @Foozle will appreciate this....

Just arrived earlier today, a 1980 Golden Ram 1 iron.  Bought it to finish my set.  Thinking about reshafting this set with something softer, and if I do, will include this with the reshaft.  I mean, what's the point of having it if you aren't going to use it, even if only occasionally?  🙂

I very much appreciate this almost mythical club!

The 80-82 Tour Grinds are very rare here in the UK. It took me years to find a replacement set for my worn out originals. A bit like buses, another set happened along shortly thereafter so I should be stocked up for the rest of my playing days. I have the 2 iron but the 1 iron continues to evade me!

Superb find! Looks to be in great condition too.

Thanks for posting. You have restored my faith that they are out there and optimism that I will find one...eventually!

The persimmons are on the way to NC via USPS for full restoration by a renowned club artist.  Ordered new leathers from Vermont for re-gripping the irons too.  The originals are just too far gone unfortunately.  Hope to see the woods before departure to Houston in late October, but being done right is more important.

Big thanks to brother Stephen8802. His knowledge is great and his generosity is even better!!!

I mentioned recently I wanted to have a wedge setup to use with every vintage set. I’ve gotten used to a 54 and 58 degree setup for 15 plus years. Thanks to Stephen I now have something very special and very vintage to play with and modify for a little experimentation.
IMG_1534.jpeg.c53492216172fe5bf320ea91ee62381c.jpegOn that left 69 sand wedge I believe.

2nd from left is a dual wedge.

3rd is a triple duty-came up as a 1971 in a 15 second google search.

On the right is a 1958 reissue sand wedge.

IMG_1535.jpeg.eb217add512a1eafedfecc508ea0448b.jpegIMG_1536.jpeg.0d102f6c8787f67ed76fc3380f17bf3d.jpegOrder is reversed in these pictures. The triple duty was a surprise throw in on the deal. Battle scars on them but still some meat left. I was born in 69 so basically as old as me. Basic resurface and regroove??Thinking bend the dual to 54 degrees and 69 sand wedge to 58 degrees. Been watching Brad Meehan videos. Not positive I want to take it on but definitely doesn’t look impossible. I’ve always had a thing for rusty wedges. Imagine these stripped raw, bright paint fill and maybe even a little backside relief grind on the 58 degree.

Rubber grips need replacing. Triple duty may be the most original with shaft label and Wilson leather grip. Dual has a slightly different step pattern shaft and a Newman leather grip with a Golf Pride butt cap. 69 sand wedge is long. Perhaps extended will measure swing weight later but heavy head weight and very heavy feeling overall. The 1958 reissue doesn’t seem to have the TT Dynamic Gold a lot of them did have and feels very light overall. Completely opposite of the 69. IMG_1538.jpeg.4ee235ba56424863d7918d8931835273.jpeg

Nothing looks better than a Staff wedge! Get them out on the grass and play them, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how well they play. Once upon a time I thought modern wedges had to be better because of science and technology. Then I played a '69 Staff sand wedge and fell in love. I hope you fall in love with one or two of these.

The best part of that triple wedge is the shaft band. For those of us obsessed with the 8802, that shaft band is the best ever used.

Very nice Redline’s! They look more brushed silver than chrome in the pictures. Grooves look great too. Did Hogan reproduce these? If these are your first Hogan’s you’re starting pretty near the top of the Hogan mountain. Redline was a popular club so shouldn’t be too hard filling the missing. Unfortunately you’ll probably have close to as much in those 2 as you spent on set but maybe not. I remember that 2 iron being pretty playable and I was a worse hack at that time than I am now.

Oh yeah be religious about keeping these grooves clean. Most Redlines I come across the faces are significantly wore out. I’ve always wondered if they are slightly softer metal. Could also be something to that a lot of ‘sticks’ played them.

I deburred them when I got home, that is why they look like that. I haven’t touched the faces yet. I have a bunch of Hogan sets,  Sabers, Apex, Apex2, Directors, Edge, Edge Pros, medallions, Apex Edge, etc. always had my eye on these ones though. I paid 50 for these, so yes, those 2 irons alone will cost me more.

Found these yesterday, paid about eight bucks for all three. No prior experience with any of these. But heard good things about solus wedges, the first flight staff 2 iron caught my eye and any decent 1 iron is worth grabbing.

Those little Northwestern 1-irons (from before they became big shovels) are lovely clubs. Good pickup. I actually liked the first one I found so much I bought a second.

Also found one of their Tournament model Dual wedges, have yet to try it but it's the same era so I imagine it will be similarly nice to hit.

Got a message at work this morning from a gal clearing out her storage unit, had three bags of old clubs asked if I'd be interested. Drove by after work gave her $20 and loaded them up. Didn't really look at them ( heat index of °108 !!) but saw some apex hogan's in there so I took em. Got them home found lots of shaft rust, gonna try to clean them with the various methods out there, throw out any suggestions on that topic. Got a set of Hogan's sans the 6 iron, some older macgregor woods, some Hagan woods and a few Hagan irons, some older spalding irons, a women's set of pga woods and irons. Lots of other odds and ends.

@bcstones  Pics from the clubhouse of vintage irons and woods.  There's several other cases with older hickories too.  Drool worthy.

Pretty sure they're 1973's. Going to try some vaporust on the shafts this wkend and see what's under the rust I'll post the results. If they come out OK I'll locate a 6 iron to round out the set. I've got a apex grind 2 iron I can use for the long end.

Almost didn't pick up this club yesterday at thrift store, still not real sure if what looks like splits is that, or the coating sloughing off...anyway, at $3 it was worth a chance.

I checked Kaplan's to see if I could get a line on year.....ran into a confusing conundrum - the emblem on top indicates an early to mid '50s wood, the "velotized" is first mentioned in '58, the insert remained the same till '60 when it changed, and I can't figure out how the "eye-o-matic" fits in. The shaft band, which image wasn't allowed to upload cuz would be over limit, is black w/TT True Temper Dynamic S on it. The grip is a green Golf Pride Velvetcord in ok shape. The registration # is on the neck, whipping is tight. As for the "...T 85...", I could find no reference in the Kaplan's that included any of those...

Any idea's....I'm really thinking what looks like cracking is just the pain/glazing (I hope).

Thanks

Awesome, I’ve always been a Hogan fan but I’m realizing more and more how good these irons are. I have 76’s that I think may be my most playable set while being my smallest blade also. They’re noticeably smaller than Muirfield’s. Quite a testament.
