Anyone shed any light on what I have bought here ?

"Quality Golf Products - Sensation" ?

Woods "Handcrafted in California" ?

For twenty quid I figured I couldn't really go wrong! Especially as you can never EVER have enough blades :)

Hot-Z Carry bag and Titleist Dead-Center putter included.

Blade-

At first glance, you may have some persimmon woods/blade irons from Sensation Golf, who appear to have been an upscale golf company (much like Geoffrey Gorman Slazenger/Crown Limited) for distribution in the UK and Europe

It appears Cleveland Golf did contract work for them, as the OIL HARDENED and M-85 stampings, inserts, and wood color appear to be straight from the Cleveland Golf factory.

Would like to see a close up photo of the irons to compare them to what Cleveland Golf was offering, but am pretty sure these were the English "cousins"..

Kind of like Roger Moore in the "Maverick" TV series....

Never seen those clubs before but they look nice! I wonder how they play?

Cheers Warren!

Did anyone ever make *bad* forged irons I wonder ? :)

They look like they will be ok.

I have been googling a bit, and think they may originate from around 1986:

http://www.qualitygolfrepair.com/

Incorporated in 1981, Quality Golf began business as an OEM manufacturer of Persimmon Woods. Our client list included companies such as Yamaha, Daiwa, lynx, Bullet, Cougar, Palm Springs and Beauwood golf.
Soon after, Quality Golf converted to the assembly of golf irons and metal woods with clients including Yamaha, Daiwa, PRGR, Bullet, Cougar, Merit Golf, Golf Gear, McHenry Metals, and Power Bilt.
In the late 1980’s Quality Golf polished up to 200 sets per month of the Merit Fusion forged irons.

Dean (Ota) has been in the golf business for over 30 years. In the late 1980’s and early 90’s, he hand ground irons for Yamaha staff players, such as Hal Sutton, Scott Simpson, David Toms and others. He made the set that Scott won the 1987 US Open. He also hand ground irons and wedges for George Archer, Gene Littler, John Jacobs, and all of Bullet’s Tour staff. In the early 1990’s Dean was the Tour rep for Bullet Golf. He made wedges for Paul Goydos who came in 2nd place at the Player’s Championship using a Dean Ota wedge. Currently he custom grinds and assembles wedges for Hopkin's Golf Tour Pro's such as Vijay Singh, Colin Montgomery, Kenny Perry, Bernard Langer, and others.

If all this is right, then I think this set might play rather well !

I'll post some better pics when I get them - which won't be for a few weeks unfortunately, as they are collect only and I'm not in the right geography until then !

Love the MO6 Tex!

Here is a new addition to my collection! A Macgregor Tourney Toney Penna Velocitized Driver, custom built for Charles Smith.

In his heyday, Charles B. (Charlie) Smith Sr. of Gastonia, North Carolina was ranked the No. 3 amateur in the country, trailing only Jack Nicklaus and Deane Beman. He was Carolinas Golf of the year in 1961 and 1963. He took up the game with a borrowed set of clubs of left-handed clubs in high school, his farther passed down a right handed set and his game flourished. Smith won the inaugural Donald Ross Invitational in 1948 and the Southern Conference championship in 1952, as a senior at The Citadel.
In 1960, he won the North & South and Southern Amateur titles, and played on the U.S. Walker Cup teams in 1961 and 63. In 1962, Smith added the Eastern Amateur to his list of victories and won the Carolina Amateur two years after older brother Dave lost in the final. The brothers won The Dunes Club National 4-Ball titles in 1962 and in 1964, the year Charlie added a second Azalea Amateur to his first from 1958. He played in the The Masters Tournament four straight years (1962-65) missing the cut three times by a single stroke. He also played in the U.S. Open at Oakmont Hills in 1961 and Oakmont in 1962. He was a three-time quarter-finalist in the U.S. Amateur.

Purchased just an hour ago or so from the local auction site here. This was a joint venture between fluffy265 and myself. Irons for him, woods for me. At least I think that's what we agreed :-). I have never seen anything like this available down here...

https://trademe.co.nz/941599864
OK, so here we go. I will let fluffy265 post pictures of the irons once he's spruced them up a bit, but here are the woods that are my end of the deal. Apparently they have had a spray of clear coat, but otherwise are original. Grips are pretty shot unfortunately, but that's about all that's wrong with them...

Great history on Charlie Smith.....Love the Custom MacGregor Driver, and the personal stamp.

That would be the '61 US Open at Oakland Hills in MI.
A friend of mine has an Official '61 US Open Program, which he got from his father, who attended the event just before he was born. Arnold Palmer played out of Miami, FL A few other names....Ben Hogan, Sam Snead,Jack Nicklaus, Gene Litller (who won that year), Julius Boros, Billy Casper, and yet one other contestant's name struck me......

Errie Ball, who had played in the first Augusta National Invitational Tournament in 1934, before it became the Masters.....
Ball left this world after living to be 102.

Interesting Custom MacGregor Tourney 945 Eye-O-Matic.

Deep faced, 6 screw insert, great grain, 46" MacGregor Tourney C shaft, leather grip, and serial number ooooooo.

The swing weight is probably approaching the E range, and with that long shaft, it must have been made for a good player - but the serial number has me puzzled

If it has Tourney Custom on the crown, doesn't it mean it's one of the 80s remakes? (MacGregor having lost the rights to the Tommy Armour name). I have one and the sole plate and stampings look identical. That serial number is interesting though...

Welcome to the world of classic clubs Ace! Thanks for sharing your "score" with us. You definitely started off on the right foot, we ALWAYS like to see pics of one's latest acquisition. A Ping Anser 2, one of the most iconic putter designs of all time. Always looks right in a modern or classic bag. Here's hoping you make a lot of putts with it, perhaps even beating someone playing their fancy new SC.

Just guessing here, but I think you may be visiting more thrifts in search of additional (and cheap) classic clubs. They're out there, all you have to do is look.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Freddie,

You are spot on with that. I had, however recently sold a M85W with the 000000000 SN. Actually Dave Wood told me that these were typically built for Macgregor executives and "special" customers. Although they were very much a nice persimmon club, they were not meant for use, more so display. I did hit my M85W however and it was very solid, so likely would play just fine.

As of late, I have been gaming a Macgregor Tourney M85W that was Tom Kite's and both loving and bombing it! On a solid strike pushing it out to about 260 or so. I was using the matching 4 wood too but I notice a small crack in the neck and decided to clean it up, refinish it and not risk the horror of watching it snap off during a round..

Texsport, the "00000" indicates its a custom order club.. I have a 1986 Nicklaus Super Eye O Matic with the same SN on neck. Your new club is a 1987 model I believe , remake. They remade the M85, 693, 945W and a few others..

Haha yeah. I also won a giveaway that this forum did for a set of Nippon shafts last week, hoping to keep the good luck and continue to play as much as I can.

Trips to the Goodwill had been pretty dry until a couple of weeks ago.

I picked up a 3-9 set of Hogan Apex PC's, a non-matching E, some Cleveland 588 wedges in 53-56-60, a Cleveland TC-15 persimmon driver in really good condition, and a fair but playable Hogan Speed Slot 4-wood. Earlier this week, trip to another thrift yielded a Middleground Black Star persimmon 4-wood, and the opposite of classic-a late model PING stand bag to put it all in.

I had sworn off any more additions for a while, but I have been wanting some Hogan irons for the longest, and couldn't pass up the rest.

I will add pictures when I get a chance.
