MD/VA/DC Golfers - Ten Seconds or Less

The XP95 are ~30g lighter than normal DG. They will also launch significantly higher. If you want lighter weight and higher launch, it is a good shaft. But if you like the DG shaft you have now, probably not a good fit.

I need new irons! I have a set of OLD AP2 712s I bought used 3 years ago from Golf Etc in Frederick for $250 (3-pw). I bent the shaft on the 3i, threw the 8i in a lake in south Florida by accident, and generally wore out the rest. I'm in love with callawaygolfpreowned.com and they are offering some discounts on various iron sets. It seems the Apex are universally loved but there are a few different versions of them. Any advice on what to look for? For what it's worth I liked the AP2s.

what makes you recommend those over the Apex?

As my handle shows, the higher launch is what I seek! I'm the a-hole who wants to hit his 7i 180 instead of 172.

Instead of being that a-hole who wants to hit it 180, why not be that "less than 15 handicap" who doesn't care about how far he hits it, but wants to hit it straighter and more consistently?

Maybe because it's so much longer to say? At 6'3 you should have no issues with distance. Consistency is your friend. Correct shafts = better consistency = lowering your scores.

This all comes from someone who has never had a fitting though.

I'm not going to argue with your reasoning as I realize the mindset of bragging about your 7i distance isn't the correct one. I believe weighing my options correctly rather than buying whatever is on the bargain rack at the local golf store will help improve my scores moving forward.

I don't think iron technology has changed much at all. Your results are going to be a huge % you and a tiny % the clubs. So spend less! Plus I have them and just find them very visually appealing.

You should see it in my little hands.

I'm not in any way trying to tell you what to do, or bash wanting to hit the ball further. I don't understand your response though about weighing your options and not just buying a used set off the rack at your local shop.

A) weighing all your options would mean getting a fitting. That's actually where you would by definition weigh all options.

B) buying a used set from CPO is doing the same thing as walking into your local shop and buying a set off the rack. Minus supporting small business.

Again, on top of never being fitted, I've never bought anything more than a used 3w from a local shop.

CPO has many different like new sets bent a million different ways, shortened, lengthened and with a lot of different shaft options. My grand scheme is to find out if I need lofts/lengths changed at all, then buy the right version on CPO.

PS I don't think you are telling me what to do. I'm really looking to crowd source imput here.

highboomer - my thoughts: go to a demo day, doesn't matter which manufacturer, but as an fyi, tex does cally demo days around the area. mess around with different lengths, try different heads. they might offer you discount pricing if you buy that day.

once you know you preferred length/type of shaft, buy ONE club to your specs (can be an older model). mess around with that for multiple range sessions, off mats, off grass. see if you like it.

then, find a set with your specs, new, preowned or whatever, and enjoy them. good luck. buying new irons is an awesome feeling. have fun with it!

edit: and yes, i love my srixon 745s!

F the crowd.

Get fitted. Buy off CPO. WALK OUT TO THE FIRST TEE LIKE A BOSS. Knowing all the cash you saved.

Millennial move. Awful.

Making relatively intelligent financial purchase over buying new and losing 30% value as soon as you hit one. Not awful.

I'm all about frugality! If you meant a legit paid fitting I totally agree and misunderstood your advice. If you're talking about essentially lying to the guys at golf galaxy that's not cool at all

No problem with that. People are paying for a fitting not to buy clubs from them.

What sucks is a free fitting then buying somewhere else. #demoguyproblems

Last night I DTTd myself into ordering a gamer old Cameron head for a new project that I made up in my mind.

Tonight I put in an 8 hour poker session at MGM and was BSTing while DTFing. I think this is the third time I've rebought a Swing Speed Radar.
