Don't quit understand why they wouldn't continue to bring the PM grind over into the newer lines. Like everything about that grind....
I feel like the PM wedges already have most of this incorporated into them. They haven't been out that long either. Probably just combine them in the next iteration but there was not need to replace something that has only been out a few months.
I really like the grind of the PM, but my heart hasn't really warmed up to the head shape of that wedge. The grind adds a lot of versatility to one head alone, and it has success of course, just not sure why they are choosing not to keep it going. But there again, as you say, it may be their next "achievement" to bring back again in the next line. It can be as much about marketing and sales as anything.
Who said they weren't going to keep producing the PM grind? The only thing I have seen in this thread is the MD3 replacing the MD2. Pretty sure the PM grind is sticking around.
I was just referring to offering the PM grind as an option with their normal line of wedges jist like the C grind, etc.

It appears to me that the W-grind is replacing the U-grind that was available in the MD2 wedges.
Completely different grind. The W-grind will be the widest sole, highest bounce but I'm told just glides through the turf. The U-grind has a concave sole and is still featured on the PM grind wedges.
Thank you, sir! That makes sense - I guess the W grind is analogous to the "WS" (wide sole) option Ping offers in their Glide wedges. I live in the area where the JDC is being played this week, and will be out there for most of the week. Hope to get a close look at these in person.

Not that it needs to be hidden. I'm just saying if there's no difference in feel or performance than why should that influence the decision to buy? How is it an important consideration when it has no effect?
it does matter to some from a feel stand point. The md2 and previous cally wedges were forged from 1020 carbon steel, its to soft for casting, so right away I know that they have to go to an 8620 carbon steel. Vokey wedges are cast from 8620 and have a different feel because of it, and to some they sound more clicky than the cally wedges do. So if they are the same geometry and metal there is no difference between cast and forged, but in this case there is a metal change because the 1020 isnt hard enough to not crack after being casted.
http://www.golfwrx.c...eel-in-an-iron/

Paul Wood from Ping's R&D department sheds some light on this subject. Cast or forged, 8620 or 1020 has no impact on feel. As Paul states, the "feel" will be impacted much more by the elastic modulus of the material, not the hardness. To that point, 1020 and 8620 have almost identical values (205GPa and 190-210GPa respectively). Given that 8620 is capable of having a modulus of 190GPa vs 1020's 205GPa, one could argue cast 8620 has the potential to feel softer than forged 1020. But at that point it's really knit-picking which brings me back to my point that it really doesn't matter.
It would make sense that an engineer from ping would try to measure feel in that manner, as they use harder steels (17-4 ss), which should feel firmer in one's hands. 17-4ss still measures in the typical 190-205GPa that most steel's fit in http://www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=6778. So trying to explain feel is due to the elastic modus is a good point for ping because this way they can argue their irons are just as soft as their forged competitors. And the measurement does make sense in theory, tensile elasticity, or the tendency of an object to deform along an axis when opposing forces are applied along that axis; it is defined as the ratio of tensile stress to tensile strain. It is often referred to simply as the elastic modulus. So this is basically a metals ability to give and return to its original shape. So saying that the give is what makes feel is what ping is arguing then. However, your hands do not feel this give, they feel energy. Energy in the manner of vibrations, low hertz frequencies tend to be what people feel as soft. The lower frequencies are caused by the density of the metals(more dense). I think ping makes great irons, however they do not feel as soft as a forged club, not because of elastic modulus but because the metals they use are not as dense as their competitors forged offerings, thus allowing a higher frequency vibration to travel to your hands. This can also be applied to the new md3 wedges. 8620 carbon steel is not as dense as 1020 carbon steel. Those vibrations also travel into sound as well, low frequency sound waves tend to sound softer, where as higher frequency sound clickier or firmer. I agree that the difference between 8620 and 1020 is not a very large one, but there is still a difference in feel (as long as geometry is the same) and I personally prefer the 1020 feel, and that is a metal you cannot cast as it would instantly crack. I'm still gonna try these wedges, and i'll probably love them, but i'll know there are softer wedges lol.

Good. Hopefully this means the MD2 start being discounted. Love 'em.
Local golf shops here in Japan are already offering discounted MD2s (down from about 17000 yen to under 10,000 yen). Like you, I'm looking to pick up a discounted MD2....well, lets be honest, since this is GolfWRX, two or three cheap MD2s.
Problem is, the slate grey finishes are disappearing fast.

The new wedges look nice, but I'm more than happy with the MD2s. Plus, with the weak yen, I dread to think what the new lineup will retail for here. The PM grinds are already prohibitively expensive.

I spent the afternoon at the JDC site following a half-day of work. Saw a group well down the 10th fairway shortly after I arrived, and caught up with them at the green. Turned out it was two Callaway staffers (Pat Perez and Jason Kokrak) along with an older gentleman carrying around 7 or wedges under his arm, that I very quickly figured out was Roger Cleveland! He was working with them and getting their feedback on a variety of shots around the greens using the new MD3s, including tight fairway lies, deep rough (we've had tons of rain in the last month), and bunker shots. Pretty cool to see Perez hole out a blind bunker shot around 25-30 yards in length on the fly!

(Note : I took some pics, and will post tomorrow once I get them into Photobucket.)

Cleveland was even doing some work with Kokrak on technique, aside from just the specifics about how the clubs were playing. Later on, I saw SJ Park, who happens to be a Taylor Made staffer, hitting several bunker shots with an MD3, and then having a discussion with one of the Callaway trailer/tour rep guys. It appeared that Park liked the wedge, and just wanted to have some custom grinding on the sole. The rep took the club with him and headed toward the trailer area. A bit later, I saw Park hitting wedge shots with another MD3 under the watchful eye of Roger Cleveland.

I have to say MD3 wedges look awesome, really liking the look. Wish I could have owned the original X Tour wedge in the day, I like the look of a straighter leading edge. Slightly disappointed these aren't forged, but hey, most Vokey wedges aren't forged either, they're cast. I'm tempted to try these in the chrome finish.

And Callaway continues to offer limited loft and grind options for LH players. That they don't even have a 50/54/58 set option is embarrassing for the company that sponsors Phil Mickelson.
Actually, it's not as bad as you think.

On their website, it states all loft and grind options (except 46*) are available to us in the satin chrome finish. Black, not so much.
