Anyone tried to take the finish off their black wedges yet? If so, how does it look?

The first wave is here! Still waiting on 52 and the 56w and 60w but these should be fun to start testing right away!

The funny thing is I do not expect to play ANY of these heads (W grinds are most likely going in the bag) but being a wedgehead, I had to order the S and the C just to try out. :)

Unfortunately I just received an email that my 52 and the W-grinds I ordered are on backorder until October 6th. They could ship earlier, but that's the expected ship date. That's disappointing as I ordered them the day they came out and already have the S and C-grind heads in hand. Hope our fall golf season here in Colorado goes well through October as I'd really love to put these through the paces.

I would bet the custom nature of both of your orders is what's causing the delay. I have a friend who ordered some with custom grips. He called customer service and they said they were waiting on those particular grips to come in from the grip company. They offered to let him change his order to something they had in stock which would let the clubs ship quicker, but he chose to wait it out. Maybe give them a call if you're getting overly antsy?

That's not the case. My S and C grind heads have already arrived with the exact same shaft. I was told the lower lofts (PW and GWs) along with W grinds have had very high demand and therefore low stock.

I have put the 52S and the 58C in the bag. Went with Black Finish and treated them with CLR and a light sanding. As to the light feel, yes the stock Lamkin grips are a bit light and I re-gripped mine with GP Tour Velvet grips. Outstanding Touch and spin.

Very nice! I am debating with myself to buy a 54W and 58C or not.

What is LCR? Or do you mean CLR?

How would I go about removing the black finish? Your wedges look so much better.

Just picked up a 52S and 58C. Demoed the 56W and 60C this morning. I have a steeper swing but still wasnt confident with the W grind. I found them to release a bit more than my tour grinds, but it was pretty wet out as well. Also noticed they seemed to come off the face a little hotter on chips and pitches as i blew a bunch of chips past the hole. Reshafting with s400 and plus 5 wraps under the stock grips. Lead tape em to D7 and D9.

I dipped my 54W last night in CLR for 2 hours and after a rinse, quickly went over it with a scotch-brite pad to get a more uniform look.

Afterwards, I stripped the white paint-fill as best as I could. I can't get the heavy duty stuff in Canada so I got some paint stripper gel that took longer than I thought to work. Either that or Cally used some super paint on these wedges...as you can see there are still some white bits left I need to try to get out still.

I am very please how it turned out, so I will be doing the same to my 58C tonight.

I managed to get some time in with the wedges and they are my favorite wedges right now. The 54W is so easy and the 58C is pretty easy too. Can open up the face easily and hit those little delicate shots. I think the grinds on these wedges really suit me.

I really like the shape and the way they look at address.

I think the feel is fine; in fact I like it so being cast isn't an issue. I do seem to get much more spin so my balls hold better. My Miura wedges feel softer but they don't spin as much. These are in the bag for awhile!

I made a thread on this but might as well post it here.

So I often hesitate to make threads like these, but let me give the assertion then give some background.

Mack Daddy 3 wedges don't spin well.

Background. Mid single handicap here.

I have played vokey sm5s most of the year and because of some swing changes, have gotten steeper through the ball and wanted a wider sole grind. The W grind seemed perfect.

Got fitted for the W grind by local Callaway rep.

Tested them on pitch shots from 50-90 yards on various monitors. Saw at least 1000rpm less on solid contact compared to vokeys and nike engage wedges. But I can live with that because you want consistency from those pitch and approach shots.

I've now played 10 rounds with the wedges on various courses, fast dry firm, soft slow receptive, all kinds of greens. Ive played all kinds of shots with various testers and different wedges to compare and see if others see what I see.

I can live with the 54 not spinning like a top as it was designed that way.

The 60 is where I have a problem.

I thought maybe it was me but I'm confident on my technique and I've had the exact same thoughts from a +1 friend, local high end club fitter, and callaway staff pro.

Greenside chips from tight lies: I like to play a low checking chip because a lot of greens I play have lots of undulation so being able to carry slopes and get the ball to stop or at least check up is critical.

With my vokeys, the chip will go, hop, hop then on the third hop, grab, them come to a near stop. Mind you these are wedges that have beaten on for a year.

The md3 will hop hop check then release out.

Short touch high shots from clean lies, where vokey or engage will grab a decent amount then release, the md3 lob doesn't even grab.

It goes on to 50yd pitch shots as well.

So my question has anyone else noticed a deficiency in spin with the 60? I just find it hard to believe that the 60 was designed to not spin, given it's lineage.

I'm wondering if maybe the grooves on the 60 first run just aren't the right angle?

We wondered if it was because the face, which feels pretty smooth, needed to be broken in: still no change.

I don't want to quit on the wedge because the W grind is great for my game but the 60 lack of spin is really dissappointing.

As of now, I know of two callaway staffed amateurs who have noticed the same and ditched these wedges.

I love the way they look, setup, feel is fine and the grind is awesome...

To be frank, yes I agree the W grind wasn't designed to be opened up alot, but that being said, in my experience, you can open it up, but have to deloft through impact. What I mean by that is traditionally playing a high shot with the face open, one would try to use the bounce but because the W grind keeps the leading edge high, you almost have to try to trap it with an open face, if that makes any sense. But yes, the traditional way of opening up and getting under the ball is a much tougher shot with this kind of grind.
