New Wilson 50 Elite.

I am a little stumped, I had not seen this level of inconsistency with the 50 prior to today. It may have even been me. With the warmer weather I am looser and swinging more freely possibly causing a few shots to fly further. My feeling is that the higher temps combined with the low compression do negatively impact the ball's performance. I know others will argue to the contrary, but that's my feeling. I also believe the harder faster greens combined with the low spin of the ball make it more difficult to play under the conditions. As I discussed with my playing partner today I have played this ball in colder conditions on some harder greens and it still was able to get the ball to hit and release a few feet and stop, my thoughts are that it has to do with higher temps. I would be interested to see what others are experiencing with the 50 in the hotter days of summer.

Maybe it was just an off day for you? I have noticed this ball flies further in warmer temps, so I just club down and go from there. Otherwise, it's still performing fine for me here in 100+* California.

I've only recently played this ball so it has only been warmer weather for me. I am pleased with the distance I have been getting with it. It is longer than most other balls I have played. I have been killing it off the driver and it is a half a club longer off the irons. I'll play a ball that holds the green and has a good feel. This ball is all of that. The added distance is a bonus. I bought three dozen to try and after my first round I went back and bought seven dozen more. If they are suppose to be a cold weather ball I can't wait to try them out in the winter..

I put it in play for the first time yesterday. Admittedly the greens were soft from morning rain. I played in the evening and it was 85 degrees or there abouts. I don't have alot to report on the ball because I was playing with a new driver and new irons. First impressions of it were positive. Chips had some grip. I had one wedge come back a foot from its pitch mark. Hopefully I will get to test more this weekend.

Must be a ball that performs better in warm weather.........tried it in the winter & it only felt good off the driver...........but since then I've found at least one other ball that I plan to use.

Tough for me as I play in tropical weather year round.....

Interesting enough though....... I have an observation.......

Yesterday was BLISTERING, 20-30+mph gust..... insane amount of wind for a casual round.

Played the Elites for most of the round and noticed 2 things

1) Off the tee box, I could work the ball well

2) Working the ball with the irons left and right was very difficult. The flighting was ok, but just could not get it to go right and left on command.

3) My approaches though were still dead on and I was getting some fantastic distances and control over all

I hit a control fade and the ball disappeared, we all saw it thought it was fine but could not find it... SO I thought this is a good chance to switch.

Pulled out the ProV and instantly noticed 2 things.

1) distance was slightly shorter on irons

2) The spin holy crap the spin... but this also was bad as my shots came up short as it held much firmer

3) exactly what I stated happened, I had a 15 yard chip to a tough hole, I swear I thinned it, it launched super low and looked like it was going to scream across the green. took 1 large hop and stopped about 5ft from the pin, WTF.....unexpected but lucky....

4) par3 3/4 wind coming from right to left and behind, 160 to flag but with the wind more likely 150ish hit a cut 8iron to hold against the wind..... BALL was PERFECT held the line and up against the gust and was dead on to the flag, BUT....20ft short... WTF........

Anyways..... My point to all of this....

Elite - Its a good lower spinning ball that gets some good distance due to the reduced spin. It is a consistent release ball, while I can stop it ( I have to hit it high with a lot of spin) When playing with this ball i judge for a 3-5ft release in all shots. If its a tucked pin I just take my medicine and play it the best I can. Its Great off the tee... but if you are looking for work-ability off irons and approach shots, its a lot more difficulty... My game plan is to work every shot....(thats how I play) this ball does not quite to it well.

ProV - Another good distance ball when well struck, but if missed can spin off...... with the right ability to spin, stop, roll back is awesome...but ability is a must to get consistent with it. Iron shots are amazing for workability. I feel like I have full control to move it around the course, Distance due to spin, I have been having a false sense of security with the Elites... I think I get about 5 total yards more due to the spin.... stays in the air longer and releases well.

So again... play what works well for you!!!!

You are pretty much testing two ends of the spectrum against each other. I think you would do well with a middle of the pack type of ball like the BX330 series, Snell MTB, or ChromeSoft 2016. Have you tried any of those?

The ProV1 spins way too much for my game and lack in distance for my swing speed. I have done really well with the ChromeSoft, but it's just out of my price range.

Play Sunday as well but I'll be giving the Strata Tour Advanced a whirl. Maybe I'll bring some of the few 50's I have left along

HAHA LOL while it "seems" like both ends of the spectrum, and the fun discussions that have ensued for 17 pages.

that is the beautiful part about the 50 Elites. I feel like they are in the higher end of the spectrum but that is all personal opinion.

What I mean and since I began participating in this thread was to find the MOST affordable performance ball I could. Purely on Price point, the 50 Elite Shines the brightest.

While specs and spin wise I can agree that these are 2 ends of the spectrum. I found this to be the best blend of cost vs performance.

I dont even want to start on how many and what types of balls I have tried. Let me just say, for opinion sake, theses have hit gold!

All those mid range balls are great, but again did not want to spend $30+ per box, Project A, B330X, Nike Platinum etc....

The Elites have more green side spin than the distance balls, PD soft, Slazenger Raw, Wilson Duo, E6 etc etc. But also still have the firm shell soft core that gives the distance that I just dont get from the ProV's and the TM TP, etc etc.

So while I thank you for the suggestion, my daughter appreciates the cheap balls, she gets one extra toy a month and as much cereal snacks as she can eat LOL!

The 50's suit my vintage short game which is pitch and roll.

Find it a little bit softer than the Duo, but I like both and hard

to beat the price.

Man I like the strata tour advanced especially when I got 2 boxes for $8.99 a piece. My only hang up is the course I bought them at doesn't have any them any more. I thought they spun good on chips and really good distance with the driver. When chipping the prov1 and it back to back, the prov1 had more grip, par for the course at five times the price I guess. At the price I got them at, they were the best ball I've played. But that's just my 2 pennies.

For the $11.99 on Amazon I figured why the hell not.

I would buy you a tall cold one if you don't end up liking then. I found somewhere on the box the are produced under Callaway.

Yes they are on Callaway's website for $19.99 a dozen...........but are available cheaper on Amazon, Budget golf, & Rockbottom.

So if you liked them it's not hard to get them again but if you've found a ball in the 50 elite don't keep on looking rock it.

Ok, things seem to be back to normal the 50 was behaving today, but that raises a question could it have been a odd ball . Don't get me wrong I am still not discounting the likelihood that it was the Indian and not the arrow, but I remember another time playing the 50 and I had a few shots that seemed well struck but had no control. I switched out balls that day and all was good. I still believe this is a wonderful ball it was back to normal this morning and I remembered why I was so fond of the 50, Temps were lower this morning than the round the other day, but I really think that ball in that 9 holes was an anomaly. Who knows. On a side note I did find a second ball I would be very comfortable playing in the Bridgestone 330 RXs It takes a different approach with the added spin but it performed well tee to green and offers a softer feel. I would suggest anyone in love with the Pro-V who is looking for a lower price alternative give it a try. I think for me however unless I have a drastic change of heart the 50 for now anyway is my go to ball.

Shot a 38/42 for 80 today with the 50, best all around round I've ever played. Played a single ball all day too, love love love these balls. Was given a sleeve of ProV's on the first tee and never even thought about breaking them out. These 50's are such an awesome ball. Heck I got a driver shot to backspin 2' out of its plug today on one hole, it was my longest drive of the season too!!

Yes. I am liking the 50. I would rather be able to go around the corner and grab a box of something off the shelf when the urge arises. That's why I didn't look for more stratas online. I might in the future. But for now I am happy with what I got.

Which is why I'll likely stick with the top flite gamer soft as not a single golf store within an hour of me has the 50 elite (even if I liked it)

I am a big fan of Wilson so here is what I think. Played hickory's today, using the reproduction square dimple ball. From what I understand it is the wilson 50 elite re-molded. Or the original Duo. It is harder feeling then the reproduction, spun less, and had a more clickie feel. Not that it was a bad ball, but I will plat the original Duo at 41 compression, has a closer feel.

I believe the Duo is closest to the Balata and pre-Balata balls for my vintage clubs, but I would rate the 50's a close second.

Happy to use either and I carry both.

I through some Wilson Duos in the bag for my Tuesday League Play because I hadn't played them for a while and wanted to see how I like them these days. I just can't get used to the low compression of some of the golf balls today it feels like hitting a rubber ball or something. I think I like the clickier sound/feel higher compression golf balls.I purchased a new Odyssey RX putter that has a soft insert in it and couldn't get used to the dull feeling when making contact while putting. I took it back to the store for a refund. Everybody is a little different in likes and dislikes and what they are used to but for me higher compression golf balls just feel and sound better. Actually, although I don't play them, I understand Pro v1's to be high compression.

Try the Wilson 50 instead. They're a bit more firm in feel. I let my cousin try one out the other day and he's a believer. Says it's not too hard and not too soft.

Just yesterday I had the opportunity to hit the 50, a found Pro V1x, and a Pinnacle Gold off the tee during a round.

The 50 and the Gold went about the same distance with the Gold a hair longer. Both felt good off the face.

The ProV1x felt like a ball bearing and was about 15 yards shorter. I was really quite surprised at the hard feel.

On the Wilson 50 - is there a difference in the feel between the yellow and white ball. The yellow looks weird and I gave up on it. I was curious if the white would look and feel better.

Played the white but now exclusively the orange. GAWD it pisses off my playing partners with the Orange ball.

No difference, a little hard and a little clicky putting....Soft core.... but damn durable shell...... so again little clicky...

I play the yellow too and love it. I see more yellow balls being played on the course now and I like that the 50 yellow is a little different. Makes it easier singling out my ball.
