Portland area course conditions

Willamette valley cc today. Was a good time with my buddy for his 40th. I didn't score well, or for that matter strike well. They punched (not plugged ) but I was amazed how well they rolled. I think they kept the speed slower with some extra water on the greens and fairways because of the heat. However, wow! Nicest course since I played since my golf trip to central Oregon back in late April.

Since I didn't strike well I decided to hit the range, got to glendoveer and the west course was empty. Played there instead of hitting the range and got around in 2hrs (what the heck?!?!?) worked on somethings but course was in great condition considering how often it gets used and how often people DONT fix ball marks. Greens were rolling true, although slower than usual, and they are quite slow there. Don't get in the long stuff on the west #3 though. Been pretty much trampled down and foot grip was on existent even though it's basically trampled down, balls still get lost there. Plenty of roll - picked a slightly uphill lie perfect with my 6 And got close to the twosome ahead (oops!!). I was trying to leave a 100yd shot but ended up about 25yds from the green and was my best shot all day.

I grew up in the Rogue Valley. There's lots of good things about it, but August is not one of them.

I recommend the Applegate Valley for days like what you have coming...

And we're forecast for 107 on Wednesday...

I started playing golf as a student at SOU. I still think of Cedar Links as my "home" course. Too bad it's gone. I had a lot of good times there.

There aren't any gold courses in the Applegate. Thinking I should go up to the Running Y and see what happened this winter. I've been meaning to hit these irons on their Trackman anyways.

No courses, but there's a lot of shade and cool water. I basically lived there during my summers growing up

The lake is full this year. One of my golfing buddies spent Sunday up there. I was grinding out a 230 time in the proam at EP in 105 degree temps. I think he had more fun.

If anyone is interested Langdon is having an amateur qualifying event for the Portland Classic this Wednesday. Not sure on the time but it's open to any female amateur with a handicap of 2 or lower. Traditionally a lot of college girls. Winner gets a spot in the Portland Classic and 2nd and 3rd get Monday qualifying paid for.

Should be a chance to see some high level amateur golf being played.

Played Langdon with WishIPlayedMore and Jason from BC. There were a few greens that were a little bumpy. Nothing too heinous, and nothing that a good rolling wouldn't fix.

Other than that, the course was in really nice summer condition. Looks like you guys have been watering like crazy, as there were a few slightly squishy spots in the fairways and the greens were very receptive.

Bluebird day!

Which greens out of curiosity? 3 or 4 greens were giving us trouble so we went to walk mowing them and just went back to the tri-plex riding mowers on Thurs and aren't happy with them again. We had to water so much through the heat wave that a few soft spots popped up but should go away pretty quick.

How did you like the tees on 6? We added a metric butt load of sand to the bunkers 2 weeks ago so those should be in good shape. What time did you guys tee off?

Wish I could've joined at Langdon morning. But I had some stuff. Sounds like it was a good time. Played twilight at rose city. Man was it SLOW. Course left quite a bit to be desired. Greens rolled fine, not great but merely acceptable. I think some greens are still recovering from some sort of fungus/disease from a few years back. Or maybe it didn't recover and is dead? I probably wouldn't pay to play it as there are so many other, better condition courses, but as part of the centennial deal so free isn't a problem.

Just got back from Langdon. Agree that a few of the greens were bumpy in a few spots, but I was still impressed with their condition in spite of the heat wave and non-stop play for about 2 months now. For some reason the fairway on 4 was soft enough for me to pitch and stop a driver, and a few other spots were soft. Fairways are in great shape, didn't notice any spots that looked bad. Every time I come to Langdon, the course is in great shape (taking weather into consideration of course). Mallrat, you guys are the best public course in Portland by my estimation (especially so when considering winter conditions).

That back pin location on 11 gets me every time you guys cut it there. There doesn't seem to be a good spot to land the ball for a good look at birdie when its back there.

We teed off just before 10. Trying to remember which greens were noticeable - I want to say 16 and maybe 12. Just watched a couple putts from one of the others that took some pretty good hops on the way.

It figures ... you finally get some sand in the bunkers and I was clear of them all day today. Lost a ball in one of the pampas grass tufts on the left side of 18 fairway. I hate that stuff...

The tee area of 6 looked pretty beat up. Did you guys have a cattle stampede come through over the week? One of our group played from the black tees, but someone forgot to (re)place the bricks on most of the holes. Range was pretty chewed up.

Love the new hot dog patio cover. Looks much more zoot than the old WalMart sunshade.

I noticed that about the black tee markers as well. Thought y'all took them down to speed up play until I saw a few here and there that were set up (some were just sitting together just off the teeing area). They did that at a central Oregon course I played recently, but they didn't even have markers out at all so I had to look for the stone in the ground.

You guys think Pumpkin is worth a play before the rain hits? I looked at the price, and its still $65 for a 5pm tee time, $100 normally! It'd better be a step above for that.

I think Pumpkin is worth it once a year. Just not a huge fan.

The black tees are a kinda funny story. We mowed tee boxes and the guy forgot to put them back. (Oops) They also keep getting stolen off of 2 holes. We had back to back tournaments on Tues, Thurs & Fri. (So rough on the course, hence the reason the tee box on 11 has PW sized divots out of a 600 yard par 5) and most tourneys ask us to remove the blacks, that's why they were just set off to the side.

Agree on Pumpkin. Once a year is plenty. It's a long drive out there from the east side of PDX, and if there's even a chance of soggy fairways, I'll drive the extra 8 minutes to Quail Valley.

The tee boxes at Langdon looked like they had seen a lot of traffic. You guys did a nice job getting them back in playable shape.

Another fine day at Langdon. We started early (for us) around 8 on the back nine. Still damp from the watering, but things dried out quickly and the greens started running pretty fast. Happy to report that the bunkers have much more sand, though I'm also not happy to report that I had the opportunity to check out several today. The course is still in great summer shape!

Just played RedTail and it is in HORRIBLE shape.

But maybe Langdon has spoiled me.

True. I played Langdon, RedTail and Quail Valley this week. RedTail is not even close in conditions. Greens are ok, fairways are dried out and hard and tee boxes are an embarrassment. I use RedTail simply as my playing driving range. It is so close to my house that I play it often. I purchased a punch card that gives me $22 rounds. If my day allows me to get away, I am always able to just show up and walk on as a single just about at any time. I still get playing partners that complain about the staff there. I don't find them as off putting as most but they are not winning any guest services awards.

Quail Valley was in very good shape, almost over watered. Greens were receptive and had good pace. It's not my favorite layout but my buddy loves it out there. Pace of play was very slow for a 7am tee time. 5 hour round.

Langdon was, well, Langdon. No complaints. Course is in great shape.

Ghost Creek is not worth it. If you can get on Witch Hollow, to me it is worth a $65 round...*IF* conditions are good. In general Witch is less of a bog than Ghost too. Avoid the entire place if it has been raining recently.

Moved up to Portland a few months ago. I live in Raleigh Hills, near Beaverton, and have been playing The Reserve North the last few weekends. I haven't seen it mentioned much on here but the greens always roll really well (a little speedy) and the course is in good shape. If anyone is looking to play with a 28yo 9-10hc, give me a shout.

Welcome to Portland. I live on the east side. Play mainly Langdon, Stone Creek and Heron Lakes. I do have a 'two for one' coupon for the reserve, I'll let you know, maybe we can play?

Welcome to the area. I live on the in Beaverton, right off the Scholls and Murray area. Reserve can be a fun course but is HORRIBLE in the winter. We used to be members there and I actually played most of my golf there before working at Langdon. The conditions vary drastically at the Reserve.

Langdon and Stone Creek are 2 of the, if not the, best courses around. OGA is a bit of a drive but always worth it for the greens fees (almost always under $45). Pumpkin gets most of the attention and has a challenging layout but most here seem to agree it is very overrated. Quail Valley can be a fun track.
