Portland area course conditions

Played broadmoor this morning. While some drives plugged some fairways got bounce and roll. Lots of goose crap, so make sure you spray/hose/wash it all off. Greens though....really are in great condition right now. Rolled way faster than the amount of rain recently (last few weeks) would suggest. Also very smooth.

Played Rose City today. Gorgeous weather. Course was in pretty good shape. Enjoyed the quick round. Played Stone Creek yesterday in fine NW weather. Tee'd off in a light drizzle and the rain increased throughout the round. Was actually hoping for the rain as I wanted to test out some new rain gear. Stone Creek also in very good shape except for hole 14. They have the temporary green in play and it was under water and un puttable.

Heading out to Heron Lakes tomorrow to play the Greenback course for the first time. I always play Big Blue when I go there. Love this going back to back to back rounds to finish off 2017. Tomorrow will bring my rounds for the year to 71. My goal for 2018....100!

Who got out this morning? Course was in good shape and weather was perfect

Heron Greenback is a bit of a mess right now. Greens were bumpy and rough but considering, rolled pretty quick...made for some difficult putts. Fairways were soggier than I expected as well - considering how well rose city played, I was thinking better conditions at greenback.

As always Langdon and Stone creek played amazing.

Played Langdon Farms today. Course is in great shape. Temporary green on #7, due to frost delay. Shotgun start.

Good to hear :)

We even trimmed the trees behind 7 way down for that reason.

Sure did. Would've been better if I didn't get iced out on Tuesday. But a great week nonetheless.

The temp green on #7 didn't kill the round. I played Langdon because you guys do a great job keeping it playable in the winter and managing tee times with frost delays.

Made it out for a surprise round at Langdon today. Final round before heading out to Maui for the week (no rounds while there, but I will catch at least a round of the PGA tourney at Kapalua). Frost delay, but not bad - no shotgun start, which was a little surprising. Some really tough pin placements (#4, 7, 9, 12, 15) lead me to believe that someone partied a little too hard last night...

Course is really playing nicely. A little squishy in the longer rough, but a great day. Birdied #6 with a nice 20 footer that rolled true. Great job, as always! Excellent way to start the new year!

I'm sure your trip to Maui will really suck now that you aren't playing. Try to have fun anyway:)

Hurry back so we can get in some prep rounds before Bandon in February!

Played 9 at Stone Creek between rain storms Monday. Overall the front 9 was in good shape. Only a few areas that were swamped. The greens were in very good condition for January.

The forecast this week and weekend looks dreadful. And of course it's coming at a very rare time as my wife and kids are out of town, freeing me up for unlimited golf. It may be miserable, but I'm playing damnit

Today was MISERABLE, we were raising heads and we were drenched within the first 30 minutes. So basically digging holes and then filling them back in. (Not as drenched as the guy on our crew who broke the sprinkler line and didn’t get out of the way in time. 250 psi straight to the face)

Are the fairways starting to get overwhelmed? We'd like to get a Bandon Prep day in this weekend, but not if we're going to be sloshing...

They were fine this morning but this afternoon was sloppy. I imagine it depends on the next couple days, today would have been a good day to break out rain gloves. They aren’t soggy just need some time for the water to soak in. The ground was dry 3 or 4 inches under the surface (dug a few waist deep holes).

Sounds like I should be glad I decided to play on Saturday. Played Heron Lakes Great Blue on Saturday, and was pleasantly surprised by how playable the course was. Soggy in some areas and shallow standing water in a few, but the fairways were mostly dry. The geese though were absolutely everywhere. When I got to #11 green, there must have been a thousand geese hanging out between the green and the next tee box, and goose poop was everywhere on the course. Also, some of the fairways seemed torn up in large swaths (from the geese?) which looked like plugs from far away, but you could tell wasn't from up close.

One of the reasons I don't play Heron in the winter much...

The geese pull up the divots in their foraging efforts and leave the replacement turf all over the fairways, upside down, amongst the poop.

Well. Broadmoor this morning was soggy. Greens were pretty smooth and faster than I expected and ran a few by...by at least 3 ft. Frustrating. Fringe and fairway close weren't too bad. Firmer than I thought. Huge pond by 13/14 in the pics. Played in 2:47 though, So that was good.

Sorry posting from phone and it loves to invert the pics.

Played Langdon today and it was in great shape, considering all the rain we've had lately. Bunkers were even groomed (though still pretty damp).

Plenty of run in the fairways, but lost two balls that plugged in the rough.

Forecast was pretty gloomy, but it turned out to be a bluebird day. Shirtsleeves by the third hole, and not a lot of wind.

Played Wildwood yesterday. Had never played there in the winter time before, but thought I would give it a try. Fairways were pretty decent, rough was pretty decent, and greens were fairly dry and firm considering all the rain we got. As the round went on, some dew started to accumulate everywhere, but whenever I took a divot in the fairway the soil underneath was reasonably dry. There were a few spots however that nearly had standing water, but they never seemed to be where I was hitting from. I only hit out of the muck a few times, and all of those spots were a bit off the beaten path :/

Greens were SLOOOOOOW though. I imagine they are just trying to keep the turf healthy through the winter, but those were the slowest greens I have ever played without a doubt. The greens were actually reasonably firm considering the conditions, and they rolled true, but it took a good 12 holes before I could muster up the courage to hit putts hard enough to make it to the cup.

I've been going to different courses this winter (usually I just go to Langdon and Redtail), and every new place I go it makes me realize how bad Redtail really is. I'd say that Wildwood is a whole step above Redtail condition-wise, though Redtail's greens are kept in a bit better shape.

Overall, I'm going to wait until late spring to play there again because of the conditioning, but I can't wait because the layout is so fun and interesting.

I used to play RedTail a decent bit because it is about 3 miles from me. Then we joined the Reserve (which we have since walked away from) and I started playing elsewhere. I kinda forgot how bad RedTail was until I went back this summer. Tee boxes aren’t even grass mix of weeds and crab grass. Nothing is consistent or in good shape. Add to that a pace of 5+ almost 6 hrs and ughhh

With some of the public options (Langdon, Stone, OGA, Heron, etc) RedTail doesn’t even rate for their range any more.

I had mixed feelings when Redtail was created. I was introduced to the game and taught myself how to play on the old Progress Downs course. $18 for 18 holes, good enough condition but goat-tracky enough to not intimidate new players. When the decision to rebuild the course was made I was supportive because of the prospect of having a new, better designed and maintained facility but it was also taking away a dirt cheap practice course. When it reopened I realized immediately that there is so much about the layout I hated that it would not be a course I would play much. It sucks to hear the conditioning has also gone downhill.

I'd play any of the other city courses in a heartbeat before Redtail and that's unfortunate because I have so many memories on that property.

hmm. you guys got me seriously questioning my ability to discern good decent from bad! lol.

fact is my buddy and I play king city a lot because we can always walk on and it's short and easy. in the winter it's always a mud pit, but I guess retail is always in about the same condition as it, just a longer course with more variety in holes. thing is king city is about 20 bucks cheaper if you play 18 than RT. So what's good out on the west side that's not too pricey? how do y'all feel about meriwether?

Redtail is the only close-in full length public course in the west side suburbs and they know it. I'm not sure what the deal is, but someone either really messed up when they designed it (drainage), or they just don't care about maintaining it well. It doesn't help that everything in that area has clay based soil either :/I've never played Meriwether, but want to get out there in the summer (I assume it's a mud pit right now too). Has anyone played Quail Valley lately?
