Since I haven't seen a taxes rant yet.

 

Our taxes got finished yesterday and we usually break about even. This year we must be "rich" because they want more from us.

Yup. It's brutal. Being self employed, single, no dependents, it can hurt. I only had health insurance for half the year, got onto my girlfriends plan at her work but still have to pay over $1,000 in ACA penalties. Last year it was over a $1,000 as well. I hate being forced into buying something by the government, especially if it's going to be crappy coverage. Last year my CPA didn't advise, but definitely made it known to me that if I didn't pay the fine the ACA language doesn't allow for any real repercussions, other then the IRS withholding the penalties from you refund, which there hasn't been one for the past 8 years.

Grrrr, I really hate doing taxes. I have to force myself not to punch my PC monitor. I've been doing my taxes for over 40 years, and my effective tax rate has basically stayed the same. You make more money, and you learn how to take more deductions. We should have gone to a simple flat tax ages ago. You look at the various lines on all the tax forms, and it's quite apparent that the tax code is written for special interests. You average tax payer doesn't fill out 98% of the lines on the forms. So why are they there? A special interests.

I haven't the time or patience to worry about it. If I had less taken out then I'd just spend it on nonsense and so not have $1400 to do with what I want as a treat (assuming that is what I want to do) after tax season. Or, if I chose to put $120 a month in a savings account, how much over zero interest are they going to give me?

 

If we were talking about millions in a tax return it may be different. But we are not.

 

Keep it simple is how I go about things.

I pay a sh*tload in income taxes, gas taxes (federal, state, county, city), sales taxes (state, county, city), motor vehicle taxes, property taxes, etc. Illinois is one of the highest taxed states in the country. Gotta pay for the politico's cronies.

 

I don't mind paying taxes for something that provides an immediate benefit. Hell, I've been ragging for years that the gas tax should have been raised to pay for roads/infrastructure. The dumb sh*ts didn't even index it for inflation, so the highway trust fund is basically bankrupt. Frikin morons.

 

However, when you see all the waste, you know we can cut in many areas.

LOL, We have the highest tax rate in the Americas unless i am mistaken. And while i don't really mind to be honest, you would think we would have a better infrastructure. Quebec is pretty corrupt, our roads are absolutely terrible (it's an ongoing joke that even a blind driver could tell when crossing into Ontario), our bridges look like they are going to fall over any minute now, and some of our hospitals have walls that are yellow and probably weren't yellow at one point. That's if you can actually see the inside of one with the waiting lists. Seriously, my mom had to have back surgery and i joked that i should stab her in the gut, because at least she'd get seen quicker.

 

But, it's not all bad. Healthcare is mostly free, university is cheap, with welfare and UI people seem to be able to live even in the worst times which keeps everyone reasonably happy (we've had i think 2 murders all year in the city of Montreal)

 

So whatever, i'm a dirty socialist. What can you do.

I'm OK paying high taxes as long as school and healthcare is cheap or fully covered. Those are two things that are important to me. I know people will have different opinions and that's fine. There is no right answer

being from Ontario... I hate the bloated politician budget as that is the number one cost and its getting out of control. The dont mind paying higher taxes for having access to public healthcare. Although the system is not great, I view my taxes as a basic insurance plan. The amount of waste and outright thievery in this city and the state of Illinois is astounding. Highest gas taxes, property taxes, sales taxes in the country yet nothing improves. A statewide pension issue that will never go away. Sale of the city's parking meters and the Skyway toll that was supposed to fill the gap for over a decade is now long since spent.

 

I love this city but it's criminal what's taking place. Same types being elected with no change in sight...

Just like every year I'm definitely not looking forward to doing our taxes this year. My wife usually gets a small return and I usually owe a ton as I'm self employed so don't pay anything through out the year until now.

 

Since we're b)&!?ing and moaning about taxes can I complain about the $8billion in transfer payments Quebec gets from the west to keep that tuition so low mean while ours keeps raising. Heck even with us going through a terrible recession out west we still won't see a dime of these equalization payments.

Don't forget to add the city's unsolvable pension problem. It would be really nice of them to include a tube of KY Jelly with my next tax bill.

 

Face it, Daley made a deal with the devil, i.e. the unions, to keep the peace while he was pushing to land the Olympics. A near bankrupt city will be his lasting legacy.

 

I've often used the term "criminal" to describe the fiscal behavior of the politicos. This is Enron-type stuff. People should be going to prison for this level of financial gamesmanship.

It's all relative though right? I live nwi and work in the financial services industry and I see Illinois wages vs Indiana wages. Illinois pays much better, people have caught on live in Indiana and work Illinois.

Yup. I good portion of my family now lives in NWI, and works, or did work, in Illinois. 'Same thing happening with Wisconsin. I have a few friends that have moved north.

The wife and I were worried we were going to pay this year so we waited until yesterday to file. We chose to go with a new tax person this time around too, after paying $1600+ in federal (but getting back $30 from state?!). Ended up paying a little for state taxes but we're getting a nice return from federal this year.

 

I swear, i will never figure out taxes aside from the fact that I can't get too happy about getting "free" money back since they're paying me with MY money =P

Yeah, I'm sure that success was simply handed to him. Work hard. Stay in school. Stay out of trouble. Get a college education (paid for by yourself or your hard working parents). Start at the bottom. Work you a** off. Become successful. How dare you!

 

One of the phrases that pi**es me off the most these days is "working class". What the f*ck is that? I know doctors that work 100+ hours a week. They went to school for decades and carry a ton of debt. However, they don't "work" for their six figure income.

 

Every person I know with a six figure income works like crazy, and has invested significant time and money in getting to where they are today. All pay a sizeable chunk in taxes.
