You are a instinct putter like I am. For some reason in school long before I started building race cars I was good in math and Trig. In fact in 9th grade one of my teachers asked if I had an older brother or had experience in welding and fabrication? I told him no and asked Why? He said because I was advanced in understanding Trig for my age. I did tell him my Dad was a gambler and was good in Math and that was no joke. He could tell you odds on any casino board game and was one of the early card counters in Vegas. He could do the card counting thing even off of 2 decks. After I was dressed and the other member arrived a few minutes later, we grab a cart and go out to my truck and grab my bag. While at the practice green I notice Mr. Burke standing alone at the corner of the pro shop watching me. On the pretense of hitting the head before we teed off I took the opportunity to pass by Mr. Burke and said to him, " My apology for the incident in the parking lot and thank you for allowing me to play here."  He looked at me and said, " That's okay young man, you knew the right password to get in here. Who are you and who are you playing with tomorrow?" I answered his questions and he says, "Good luck tomorrow and enjoy yourself here, hope you like it." We played 36 holes that day and I saw Mr. Burke on a cart on 2-3 occasions on the course. He'd sit and watch folks hit shots and sometimes say hello but mostly observing people play golf on his course.

 

So the next day me and my partner are in the A Flight and shoot a 6 under for 3rd overall in Flight & 2nd place net. The payout for us was around $600 each and a nice custom set of Mike Taylor wedges. What I didn't know was there was a Calcutta on this tournament that ended up grossing around $300K. And Mr. Burke bought a few teams, including us, and made $5K off of us after buying us for $1K (minimum bid). I was standing at the bar with my tournament member when Mr. Burke came to me afterward and said, "Todd my lad, thank you for playing well today and carrying your partner. If you need a tee time, just tell them I said it's ok. I look forward to seeing you out here again." As he started to walk away I said, "yes sir Mr. Burke, thank you again" to which he replied, "just no more showing your a** in the parking lot, ok"? My playing partner looked at me and asked what that was about and I told him. He was incredulous and said, "there have been at least 50 people I know of get tossed out of here for the very same thing. The only thing that saved you is how you answered him. I reckon it pays to be respectful and my mom would be proud.

 

Cool Story--- Can give you a similar one though not featuring anyone famous

Years ago they were playing this Shriner's Tournament that was well publicized in the press and all. They had prizes and such and ran a Calcutta auction with part of that pot going to the Shriners.

We were on the first tee and one of the guys on my team ( who has since passed) was an absolute cluster. He was from the area and his Dad was a prominent MD in the area. For some reason we were the first group off the 1st tee so everyone local press included was there. Now this guy was talking junk and took a swing at the ball so hard his pants fell down right there in front of everyone and he was going commando. Everyone about died. Just when we got it back together to try to tee off some guy with a falsetto voice started crooning " there's a Moon out tonight" and we all fell out again. I swear it took us 20 minutes to get our composure back to try to hit a ball. Now back in those days I was a hard core golf gambler and had I not bought into our team for $200 I would have unstrapped my bag and went home right then. Now back in those days I drank but did not drink when playing money matches. I was so pissed by hole 3 I had taken a couple of drinks ( at a Shriner Friend's suggestion) and calmed down. All during that day you could hear the singer croon all over the course "There's a Moon Out Tonight". Never found out who that guy was but was told he was one of those crooners from the 50s. We ended up in the money. The guy whose pants fell down did not buy into the team and that is why I had $200 in our team. He had nerve enough to ask if we were going to comp him and no we did not. Funny thing is this guy did not drink but good thing because he was goofy enough without being drunk. You would have had to be around him to get the gist of things. His Dad asked me about things and I told him he refused to buy into the team said we were not good enough to win any money. Come to find out he went moaning to his Dad about us not giving him a cut. I told his Dad I offered to lend him the $100 figured he may have been broke. His Dad said that he had a pocket full of money and added I would not give him a red hot cent either. I never played golf with him again. I did the Shriners double duty that day. I ran in the Shriners race at the fairgrounds that night. On the Golf I won $1000 off my investment and gave them back $200. On the race that night we ran 3rd and I donated all of that back since one of my sponsors toted all my expenses  ( gas tires pit passes). On Shrine races I always donated all back less expenses even on my dime. Note: I did 2 shots on the 3rd hole but did not drink anything else that day because we were racing that night--- I never drank or smoked left handed Marlboros when I was going to race

We used to have a good home phone, good internet, until the government , god bless them , decided it required an update, now we have the NBN, national broadband network. Sounds good does it not.

The old internet was owned by a telecom company, serviced and run well, most of it was leased out to other providers. The phone network, land lines was a completely seperate system, worked very well.
Both had a seperate power supply, that was also separated from the normal home power supply.

NBN is owned by the federal government and rented out to providers, the installation and maintenance is also  contracted out. Installation has been on going for Six years and still has many to go before everyone is connected. When it is connected to make it available to your home, it is compulsory to use it, all other internet systems are shut down by law.

Now, land line is connected to  the internet, before it was possible to have a land line even if you did not have internet, not now they are joined, have both or go without. I know mobile phones are all the rage, even though we have them, we-can only use them at home if we go outside a fair way from the house as reception is very poor, so we need the land line. 

Before all power was seperate, now they are all on the normal domestic system. Why is this a problem, well today a tree branch fell across our power lines, so instead of just losing power we lost all methods of communication, phones, internet, and mobile not working. Fortunately we have a generator so we had power to the house, but no means of contacting them. 

It was resolved eventually but what a mess, all because our government wants to control everything.
All the installations that existed before were compulsiary obtained by the powers that be.

@tolmij  Have you investigated cellular signal strength boosters?  An antenna is placed outside and connects to device box inside to amplify the signal.  Know someone that lives rural, had poor reception inside the house, and installed one.  Solved the problem.  Now idea what brand or the cost though.  

 

Believe most cellular phones have the capability to toggle on Wi-Fi calling.  To utilize a Wi-Fi network for sending and receiving calls.  My iPhone does, it's always on.  Occasionally will be somewhere, like inside a large store, where a cellular connection is non-existent.  

 

We're fortunate, have good cellular signal strength inside the house.  Haven't had a land line for years.  We had switched over to VOIP (voice over internet protocol) just prior to pulling the plug.  The quality of communication was at best average.  Then again, that was 10-15 years ago.  Can't remember.  The local cable company has even stoped pushing it as part of their bundled packages.  Now into the cellular business.  Don't shop my cellular provider anymore.  We stick to what works, they're all about the same cost-wise once promo plans expire.  Plus, we always seem to have at least one phone (of three) on a installment plan.  So we're sorta locked in.  

 

The broadband provider forces you to have a land line (which I assume you have to pay for) in order to get internet service?  That's outrageous.  

 

Internet, cable tv, cellular.  Monthly technology expense is now as routine as paying one's utility bills.  Somehow they've become a modern necessity.  Or go off the grid.  And live with no morning WRX.

@tolmijThat sucks. We seem to be getting to that point here, and frankly I find it disturbing. 

 

Kinda reminds of the USGA...passing down edicts that do nothing to really grow the game...if anything, just the opposite, like this whole roll back and or bifurcation thing...,which I am against. For years I have been saying to simply make changes to the golf course: longer rough, narrower fairways, etc. Besides, the USGA seems to focus on the 0.0001% of the golfers, and forget about the 60 million odd or so golfers who keep the game alive.

We have considered a booster but they are expensive.

 

Another problem with our internet is they have installed copper lines for all connections when the previous government was at least going to use fibre optic cables which are more secure and much faster. They are going to replace them as they realise it was a mistake but it is going to cost something like a further ten billion dollars which customers will have to eventually pay, and it wil take another ten years which at my age I am unlikely to experiance.

Fortunately we still have competition for telecom services in this country with three major players that offer national coverage, although it can be spotty in places.

 

Like Australia we have a vast country with low population rates and most of those are located within 100 miles of the US border.  As you can imagine that leaves huge swaths of the country with rudimentary communications at best.

 

WE use a regional provider for our cable TV and internet.  We are with a national carrier for our cellphone service.  Like @Fellaheen51 we have no landline phone (although we do have a VOIP line).  Costs are what they are.  We have a family plan for cell service and a bundle for internet, TV and home phone.  WE actually pay more for our cellphone plan than the other package, but it's on a promotional rate.  They will be about the same when that is finished (08-21).  There are cheaper alternatives, but we stick with the bigger names that have the most reliable service.

I could likely bang the job off in another week, but there's no particular rush, so I'll just keep working away at it at a measured pace.

Pay as you go really isn't an option in Canada.  The system is set-up on a contract basis, although a lot of the secondary providers offer what amounts to a pay as you go provided you're phone isn't locked.

 

WE both have smart phones -- DW has an iPhone and I have a Samsung Galaxy -- that we got as part of a three year contract.  I rely on my phone for quite a lot of things as I use it as a mobile wallet, camera, NAV amongst other things.  When we moved they were our only sources of data until I had a deal struck for cable and the install competed.  We have a 5 gig data plan.

Damp it down with a sponge, let it soak in then use a rotary stiff brush in an electric drill and scrub it off. Makes a mess but quicker and easier.

I like your term "monthly technology expense" Fella. That sums it up perfectly. 

 

We made changes in late 2019 to reduce our costs. After years and years with Verizon we switched

our cell phones over to Consumer Cellular. We were a little concerned but hopeful we would not later

regret the switch. It's been over a year now and Consumer Cellular has been great and they have, as

far as I know, the lowest prices of anyone and, of course, no contract. 

 

When it comes to internet and TV, we have both through Spectrum. We cut the cable TV for awhile,

missed it and switched to internet TV. We've had Roku TV all along so we were never completely

without TV, just some of the channels I like to watch golf, football and other sports on, mostly. 

Our internet TV was, at first, a lot less than the cable TV but then Spectrum jacked up the prices

and we were back where we were in the first place price wise. At least contracts are a thing of the

past when it comes to cell phone, internet and TV service these days in the USA. We get all the

same channels with internet TV with Spectrum as we did with cable TV.

 

When I add it all up we pay around $235 a month for all 3 combined. I don't know if I can get it

much lower so, as Fella said, that's our "monthly technology expense",  pared down as low as I can

get it. I'm not complaining...............back in the 90s we had cell phone bills alone that were much

more than that.

Well my new signature is posted and I will admit I have went 180* from the norm. I had been experimenting some and this set up is better on my body for now. Looks like I may be accused as a TM fan boy now. Do not know if this is a permanent move or not on the irons and wedges. Time will tell after I maybe heal up better

There is a reason for that and the 52* has only 8*. I can hit the same old shots I hit with the 588 8* with the 52 now. Lost distance as I got older. When I carried a 60* it always had 10*. Do not carry a 60* now. You get it where I am coming from now

We are just the opposite...we never use the land line and just use cell phones. However, we have to keep the land line or our rates would go up. Doesn't make much sense.

That reminds me...Massachusetts finally wised up regarding the Covid vaccine. They realized that some seniors might not have cell phones and/or computers, so now those folks can call in to make an appointment. A gentleman I play golf with fits this category...no cell phone or computer...he is 80.

In our last house we always used mobiles, only when we moved did we have problems. We have had computers since they were available to the public. Son works as a programmer in the medical industry and we have just about every tech gadget you can buy. Never understood why the older generation do not have them as they make life so much easier and there are so many people who can help set it up. So much easier asking google when the specific shops close and telephone numbers, our google home has around 15 daily reminders and helps turn most household items on and off. Computer technology, love it, don't know how we ever survived without it. We all have at least three iPads, we can operate air conditioning etc without moving from the chair.  Never be without it. Me  soon 79.

The bundle that I have with my cable company has a lower monthly rate with the TV, internet and home phone combined versus purchasing the TV and internet services separately.

No such luck...  Best I can figure is that the wallboard used in the closet was not properly sealed with a good primer.  I've tried wallpaper stripper solution.  I've tried steaming it.  The only place it will come off willingly is where there were drywall repairs done.  In other places it soaks straight through to the backing paper and creates a helluva mess.  I think I maybe forced to sand a layer off and then seal and repair the surface before painting.

 

DW said it's just a closet.  It's not like people will be looking at it.  My response was:  Yabbut I will know.  I just hate it when I run across work that was done with corners being cut to save time and money.

@tolmijMy mother is 90 and is tech savvy. Has a cell phone, iPad, and a laptop. I have a cell phone, laptop, and golf clubs, lol.

I tried forever (around 5-6 years) to find a Pink Panther driver head cover and then a Foghorn-Leghorn, Pepe Le Pew, and Dino (from the Flintstones) for the fairways/hybrids. I even bought the stuffed animal versions off ebay and my bride and mom were gracious enough to make a serviceable head cover and line them with a lambs shearling (the inside from some old Uggs slippers). I proudly carried them across the country for around 4 years until they were liberated from my bag on a golf trip to Scottsdale. IDK if it was the TSA, airline, or at the bag check at Greyhawk but it really doesn't matter now. I used to get a lot of comments on these covers and had several offers to buy them or have my bride make one. Knowing the perfectionist she is and how she loathes sewing I kindly said thanks but no thanks. 

 

Anyway, this cover looks pretty cool and has made me reflect on my best dog (black Lab). I really don't know if I want him on my bag or not. He gave me several of my fondest memories and without a doubt, everything he had. On the other hand, he was an hornery critter and could make me mad enough to shoot him. Obviously, I never did and when I was aggravated at him he'd wait until I was sitting down, with a Jameson in my hand, somewhere and come lay his head on my foot. At that point, all was forgiven. Damn I miss him...

WE don't have a dog anymore so this is not something that I'm looking into doing.  It's quite the vanity piece at $200 a pop with shipping, but I suppose that collectible Scotty headcovers go for more so something of a person nature and unique at that price isn't out of line.

@nitram; sorry to hear about the disappearance of your specialty headcovers.  That's the problem with items that are really cool.  In this day and age they have a habit of walking away when you aren't looking.  Has happened to me too.  Really a sad commentary on society.
