It's really weird. When I retired I thought I would play 3 or 4 times a week. I've yet to play 4 times in a week. 2-3 times a week is the norm. Guess I need to go back to work. 😁

We working guys are lucky to play once a week, I do remember playing 18 then going out again for 18 more. Now the body would reject that idea.

But next week I am joining a gym again and will start back on the road to more power, been doing the backyard exercise but I lack the motivation to do it most days, if I join a place then I will get after it since I am paying for it and this place is a few miles from the house and open 24/7 so I can go in the morning or on the way home or whenever.

Of course since I am now back to traveling and hunting work, that will make it not as regular as I would like but I hate feeling weak and need to get the legs stronger to avoid the knee replacement as long as possible.

I've lost 23lbs since January 1st when I retired. Walking 2 miles a day has done it

That's awesome, my weight is down but so is the strength and as a life long muscle head it sucks. I was never really balanced body wise (always more upper body) but being on a boat all those years I had good strong legs, now walking down stairs is scary and really iffy 1st thing in the morning. 

 

On new meds for the arthritis (enbrel) and have to take steriods everyday for the next month or so until it kicks in or the joint pain is stupid. Might as well use the roids to my advantage and "pump it up" as Arnold used to say...sitting in a Hotel room in the D.R. waiting for my Customer to come by to go look at jobs, so just thinking about exercising is tiring...

Made good progress on core strength, stability, and balance from Sep - early Jan. The handful of rounds I was able to squeeze in around the holidays I felt noticeably better, was not tired after 18, and may have been hitting it a little better, though the conditions that time of year make that hard to know for sure. 
 

Then work got really busy around Jan 15 and I fell off the wagon big time. Didn’t make the 3x / week workout a priority, with predictable results. When I played in that USGA event last week I didn’t feel great, exhausted, and just worn out. No excuse, 3x weekly is not that damn hard, especially when I know full well how much better I feel. 
 

Went back yesterday and back to building the habit. I won’t allow myself to fail to stick with it.

About three years ago I decided I had had enough.  I felt big, and I was relative to my frame, too big and decided (well my spouse decided for me).  For a minute I joined a gym, but I hated the congestion at the gym.  Waiting for 3 minutes or changing my preferred rotation wasn't awful, but the drive to and fro plus having to workout around my schedule made my next choice a pretty big leap but glad I did it.

 

We opted for iFit, a Peloton-esque set of trainers who come to me via computer.  I chose iFit because I prefer rowing as my cardio rather than running or biking, I think it is a better workout for the time I can invest in it, and Peloton doesn't have any rowing workouts to follow.  5 times a week I get up early, turn on a video and either row, lift, yoga, or bike (I do it occasionally) and the machine changes the tension on the climbs on the bike (and if you treadmill it will tilt to reflect the incline).

 

I don't feel like I changed the diet too much, but I went from 215-190 in about 7 months, but 190 wasn't easy to maintain.  I like beer too much, so I sit in the 195 range.

 

I feel stronger, and in fact know I am, and those trainers don't let you skip doing legs.  Might be something to consider if the drive gets too onerous.  And, to your statement, the machines and the subscription to the content isn't inexpensive so I also feel like I have to do it.

i’m the stiffest person i know. putting on socks is an adventure.

 

i’m trying to stay away from ibuprofen and acetaminophen both. i’d like to have a functioning liver and kidneys for a couple more years. just makes it harder to get around.

 

when i make a putt, i leave it in the hole and my golf buddies pick it out for me. no, i’m not getting one of those cups for the grip.

 

got a haircut the other day. an old, old guy and his three sons in an old fashioned barber shop.

 

the old, old guy turned out to be 7 years younger than me. sheesh.

3 HIIT workouts that I customized off 40 minutes YouTube interval formats 

 

And 3-4 days of just 15 minutes of heavy (8-12 rep range) strength training with a 60lb weighted wear and a pull-up bar. 
 

Training at home is a game changer. And if you gotta spend some money to get the gear you need, what could be more important to spend your money on?

Most of it. The only things I need the gym for are cable rotation and Paloff anti-rotation — need a cable stack for those. Gym is just a couple min away and 3 sets of 2 exercises takes no time. 
 

Everything else is at the crib with bands, Pilates reformer (own one), and medicine ball.

Never enjoyed the workout component and still don’t, but I do know I feel a lot better when I am doing it. I don’t feel tired by the 14th tee box nor exhausted after the round…..so I know it’s helpful and important. 
 

@bscinstnct no excuses. Gym is not too hard to get to, workout is not too long, my back isn’t sore, nothing. I just didn’t do it.

I was like that when I lived in Gaffney. The last 2 years I was the Maintenance manager for a trucking company, ran my own shop building race cars and doing welding, racing on the weekends and being a Volunteer Fireman. Many nights I functioned on like 4 hrs of sleep. It wore me down. I finally sold all my property up there plus the racing operation and moved to the Beach. The first 2 years I was here I did not do squat but ride my Harley, fish on the pier and play golf. I finally went back to work as a mechanic for a concrete company. Got into the same jag again at the concrete company working sometimes like 80 hrs a week. I went one stretch for 6 months without a day off. Oh yeah made great money but darn near killed myself. Had a stint co owning the golf shop and then the wrecker business. When I got out of the wrecker business I decided then and there I was retiring at 62. When I went to work driving a truck at the scrapyard I told my bud when he hired me I was out at 62. Now I worked hard the last 6 years I was there and saved money and met my goal and did it. Little did I know I would be a good guy and agree to work 20 hrs a week and get hurt. I am not going to say it was worth the pain and crap I went through but I got a good settlement.

i did play 5 days per week and practice the other two for a few years. i can’t remember not having a club in my hand every day then.

Right now I am only playing 3 to 4 times a week weather permitting. For the first time in years I feel physically able to do work on the house I have not felt like doing the last 4 years. I have came to like it makes me feel useful. I did have a couple of folks do some half arssed work the last few years. Now days you can not find anyone that is willing to do work period. Well I am healthy enough to do like my old man said "if you want something done and done right do it yourself". That I am doing.

Worked this morning on cutting back an Oleander tree in the front flower bed. Now it was grown up bad where a guy I paid last year to cut it back did not do a good job Plus it had a bunch of vines growing up through it. I got the reciprocating saw after it plus the weed whacker with the blade. Dragged all the crap to the curb. It got real humid since we had all the rain yesterday. Have not got all done I wanted to do but got hot and tired and quit for now. Like I said before I run this job around here and I am the Commander and Chief. Came in and took a shower and rested. Since the wife works tonight we are going out to eat. If it cools off and we do not get storms I may work in the cool of the evening. Got the regular league tomorrow and I plan to play unless it is CPO or we get rain

LOL at the time I preferred to sit in the 19th hole and gulp down Yeungling's. Those guys when they lost would always INSIST on an Emergency 9. LOL one time the Godfather (Miura Dealer) and I were partners and the last group in. We had an impeding summer storm coming up. We knew we were killing two teams and he told me to slow down some do those guys would want an Emergency 9. We had just gotten off of 18 when the thunder got close then the storm came. He told them pay up no Emergency 9 that day

I wanted to take a second to publicly thank you for your help with my grip Soloman. Since your help my game has done a 180. I'm hitting the ball like I was 10 years ago and that's no exaggeration. One full club less with my irons and a good 20 yards with the driver. You're the man!!

That’s what I’ve become too.  I’m still stuck around 0.5 to 1.4   That’s my floor.  But it’s particularly frustrating when your known ceiling was once +2.8 while playing large qualifiers all over.  I cared a lot about my game until I just couldn’t.  It was killing me.  Literally.  I would come home so angry because I couldn’t play well , that  it just was unhealthy.  I know folk will roll their eyes at the context of me saying that while still retaining a 1 handicap.  But you just cant unsee what you’ve seen.  
 

 

It’s a lot like my track days.  My mind can still see a 48-49 second 400 meter. But I’m afraid to ever put the shoes on because I don’t want the updated memory of not breaking a minute.  Not breaking a minute is laughably slow in the world. Used to run in.  Like can’t get in the field slow.  
 

.  At least with golf it happened gradually.  Which has tricked me into continuing to play once a week. At the time I was at my best , I said aloud “ I’ll quit if I get to where I can’t be consistent “.   And if it had happened cold turkey. I would quit.  as it is I’m rethinking what I enjoy.  And it’s just about like you say 4/5 hours once a week. That’s it. If I get 2-3 hours total to practice. That’s a lot.  I can get more practice time. But I’m so tired. It takes a 12-14 hour day ( up at 6 and dinner by 8 ( hopefully ) to survive these days.   And I’ve learned to not practice when I’m tired. It’s counterproductive.  As in it hurts the confidence more than it helps  

 

tale today for instance ….father in  law has called , informing me that he’s having a dealer text me sprayer info , because he doesn’t “ do email “ on his phone 🤣.  That meant a text was coming my way.  I was to then decide what I thought.  Let him know , ( which has to be a call not a text ) and then if the deal made sense , hook up a trailer to a truck. Load a tractor to take to lift a sprayer  , and go pick it up.  This while I’m trying to paint a booth full of small parts hanging up , and I work on a 520  deadline for pickup of the kid from track practice.  While juggling calls , texts, people who show up , and lately , thunderstorms of epic intensity.  It’s a crap show. 

I was born old.  So I don’t mind that.  I’ve never been a young thinker.  Or a carefree person.  But I used to rest on the weekend, and not count pennys , or choose thrifty options at the grocery store too. The hustle was 5 days. Not 7.    It’s frankly getting old.  Margins have to come back into spec , or im one of  the early checkout folks.  Stress will kill you. And I have no stress free activity.  
 

sorry. I shouldn’t say half that.  I’m waiting for a cloud full of lightning  to pass so i can load the tractor up to go.  So I’m just caught up , for a minute. Anxiously waiting.   The Sprayer deal is done.  We have 10 acres of Johnson grass that won’t die.  And we’re expanding sunflowers to that field …. So have to have something to kill it with.  At this rate of equipment influx I need a new building about 200 foot long to get it all inside.  I’m not complaining about that.  But it’s jist one more thing on my list.  I think my father in law is pushing  to set me and my son up for a farming future.  And I appreciate it.  But it’s sure extra at the moment.   He lives like he’s going to live 20 more years ( and I hope he does ) I used to say I didn’t know where he got the energy. But in hindsight I do.  He has me to do the heavy lifting.  While he rides around and smiles 🤣…

i didn’t just pull it out of my butt. 🙂

it came from testing hundreds of tour pros and elite golfers, then finding patterns, then developing a test to apply it individually.

 

eliminated all preconceptions before starting.

 

believe it or not, that’s just one piece and the start. the grip relates to how to use ground forces individually to get even more swing speed.

 

your face would hurt from grinning,  so maybe you should stick with this for awhile. 🙂

On the golf I can relate.

Now I never kept a handicap because I turned Pro early on in life. When I played or practiced all the time I would say I was around +2 or so. When i quit playing golf full time and started trucking and racing I was still shooting Par maybe 2 or 3 over with no warm up no practice.

When I moved to the beach I started playing back regular and playing local Mini-Tours I would say I got back to my old self. I decided I needed to go back to work and earn real money. I still played on the weekends some and sometimes during the week and never practiced. I still shot around par golf.

When I retired at 62 I was still long especially for my age and was still playing from the mid tees shooting anywhere from Par to 5 over. In fact the league guys told me to play in their league I had to move to the Senior tees and there I would be scratch which was too low for their league. 

April 30 2020 everything changed for me. That was the day of my accident. To be honest the Docs were not sure if I would ever be able to play again. I worked hard sometimes too much. I had to overhaul my swing. In your world it would be equal to a body off of frame full restoration. I do not turn like I did and get off balance. I had to figure out how to swing and stay on balance and to play pain free. I also had to learn to plot my way around the course. That was never my style. I was always hit it WFO find it and figure out how to get out of the mess I created. In the day I could get out of jail with the 5 iron and was a good wedge player and stellar putter. I also lost like 50 yards off the tee no joke. With my nerve and eye issues I am no longer as good of a putter as I once was. A lot of it is also age progression and I know that

I really got frustrated and was going to quit the game period. I had a good soul searching as in what could I do. Messing with race cars was out. Riding Harleys even 3 wheeled ones was out. Driving trucks even part time was out. Fishing was out because I got too bored unless I was drunk and I do not ever want to do the drinking drunk thing again. Golf basically was it. I ended up working on a way to play and not strain myself. After shortening my swing and getting used to it I have found I am a better ball striker than I have ever been. I have learned to build off of that. Now days I hover around 10 to 14 handicap with the league with scores posted every day. I have learned to accept the fact I will never be a shell of the player I once was. I have to remind myself that I am lucky to be playing at all and not in a wheelchair or walker. Yep I have 70 somethings from the same tees blast it by me. I have learned to accept that also. Yep I joke around now and tell people I am 66 with an 80 year old back. Funny but it is a fact.

I have a golfing friend who I had to train.  Phone calls are so 1970's.  I had to get him to learn how to text to set up our golf tee times.

 

Now if I can just get old-fashioned Larry in L.A. to stop  doing a phone call every 10 days that lasts almost 3 hours.  Bring back landlines and steep long-distance charges!
