It's interesting you mention your shoulders began to turn on a flatter plane as that has always been my go to bad habit in the swing and I found that the more synch up concepts such as Slicefixer and monte seem to have some allowance for this compared to some other methods.

I agree the grip and setup play a major part of the swing and that's the part I'm currently working on, I have developed a tendency to include too much secondary tilt in my setup and this is causing too much weight/pressure to be in the right foot at address, which leads to a hang back at impact. It's only due to a lot of golf experience that I've been able to get the club back to the ball solid but there is so much shaft lean the ball doesn't have enough of a launch angle. 

 

 

 

Rarely venture into I & A, much less read what's posted.  Whenever I have, don't know what the he(ll) they're talking about.  I'm easily confused by the language of swing.  Jumbles my head with to many thoughts.  When I try doing swing things, when I don't understand what I'm doing, the results are often counterproductive.  

 

One aspect of swing that I can understand, and reasonably (Yes, you Mr. Reason) implement is setup.  Grip, stance, position, alignment.  All aspects of the golf swing that can implemented prior to beginning the physical motion.  I call it...."Set it and forget it".  In that, once I've taken care of the setup process, no longer have to allocate any thoughts to it once I begin making a swing move.  IDK.  Seem to swing best with an uncluttered head.  Zen golf?

I agree with your wife on this one.  I remember when my son used to get Golf Digest and they would publish their 100 top instructors list and a swing tip issue and found exactly what your wife was talking about.  One one page instructor A would tell you to do Y to correct a slice.  Across the fold on the other page instructor B would tell you to do the exact opposite thing to correct the same problem.

 

It was at that moment that I quit reading any and all golf instruction in the popular media.  It was obvious to me that swing tips were very much an individual thing and could only be acted upon successfully with a knowledgeable pair of eyes guiding you.

 

Since that time I've only read two gold instruction books, both of which are old.  Harvey Pennick's Little Red Book and Paul Runyan's The Short Way to Lower Scoring.  Neither made me a better player, but I sure enjoyed reading those books.

 

FWIW I don't find much that's actionable on YouTube.  The best thing I have run across there was a series of videos Play Your Best Golf with Tommy Armour from the 1950's.  I think that I may have embedded a few of those over on the Classics board.

I have a copy of Tommy Armours book, handed down to me by my dad. 

 

I agree that golf instruction is a minefield if you don't have some idea of what you are looking at or for. 

 

I was taught to have a sound understanding of MY swing and what does and doesn't work for it. As mentioned previously in the grille I have come to learn that certain actions just don't work for me on several levels so I just avoid them. I admit to being a swing instruction Ho however as I read a lot about the swing, I enjoy the theory and discussions regarding them but I rarely actually tinker with my swing outside of the parameters I have,

Those are two of the best to read. Harvey Penick was a soft-spoken genius and gentleman. Runyan was a short-game master. Both taught with a common sense approach that seemed to resonate with most that they encountered. And both were also destined to teach in their time as I don't think many would pay them much attention these days as neither self-promoted nor were 'flashy', and to me that's a good thing.

Isn't it funny that for all the progress that is being made, the game just keeps getting harder for the average individual who steps up to the first tee?

 

They're doing this on purpose of course because they want to ensure our continued reliance on equipment and instruction.  Grow the industry even if the number of people playing isn't going up.

 

The thing is that it takes a while to figure this out.  It's a bit like investing where you need to spend 20 years with an advisor before you figure out you can do better by just buying an index fund.

I think one of the biggest issues holding the average golfer back is information overload. It is too easy for the average person to get lost in swing theory and mechanics and without some sort of roadmap and plan you will never figure it out. 

 

Before the days of mass media, golfers went to their local professional for a lesson, worked on it, got better then went back again. 

 

Now they spend all day looking at tips on yourtube and online, never see a professional and get lost in a myriad of ideas and thoughts. I play with one such person, he's a 14hdc but every week he has a new idea/move/swing thought that is going to transform his game to a single handicap. 

 

I never see him practice with any structure, when I do see him at the range it's smashing driver as hard as he can and never actually working on anything. I've been in a bay next to him, in succession hit a top/fat/sh*nk/top/top/chunk and not even batted an eye lid as I was working on something and felt I made a good motion. He didn't grasp the fact that working on motion is different to hitting balls. I then flushed the next three without a second thought.

Other than MDLT I can't agree more. MDLT just seemed to throw my brain into a spin and I couldn't translate theory to motion/feel.

 

I played with the Malaska theory/method for two years and had some great results, even qualifying for an invite to the England Golf sixes and places 10th in the Belfry's annual Scratch Open (with a partner off 14 at the time)

That is commonly called Paralysis by Analysis---- Too many conflicting swing thoughts---- My MD who is a golf bud is one of the top Cardiologists in the state. His mind absorbs information like a sponge and holds it. Good for the medical professional but bad for golf. He got to where he could not play a lick. He asked me to help him so I did. And trust me it was hard. He had so much information he could not process it into a swing. I had to get him to dump info. He was still worried about the club in the backswing and I told him bluntly " I do not care what the club does at the top. I do not care if you stick it in your wazoo on the way down but I want it here in the hitting zone." as I pointed out where and what it was. I finally took a sharpie and drew a big dot on the back of 2 or 3 balls and drew a mark on his Ping Eye2 iron. I told him I want you to hit this ball with this club here to that flag there. Took him about 2 dozen balls but he got it. He ain't no scratch or nothing but does ok for how often he gets to play. He is the one I uttered my famous statement to "just hit the fricking ball". And yes I have him weaned or at least I think so from golf magazines and instructional videos

Going back once again to my previous sport Judo, this is how I approached teaching, no information overload as most of the movements will be dictated by the individual body conformation, the just build slowly on the natural movement.

Over the years have looked at several golf tuition videos and they could be talking a different language.

This commentary makes a lot of sense to me.  As a decidedly average golfer, quite easy to become lost in swing theory.  I've saved many a youtube video that I felt had merit.  The problem is that I watch them while sitting here posting.  Maybe a couple times, jump up out of my seat and dry swing with an imaginary club the point being made.  But when it comes time to practice it for real, at the range or while on the course, impractical to have the video at hand.  To review, make actionable.  Substantively different than having a live person standing there instructing the specifics of a particular move correctly.  

 

Didn't golf in my youth, no exposure to it.  Didn't begin playing with any regularity until well into my 30's.  And essentially self taught.  Never had a lesson or a pro to analyze my swing.  Haven't studied mechanics, other than reading a snippet of something once in awhile.  Heck, I've never watched a video of myself swinging a club.  (The fear of it being worst than I imagine is real.)  So "feel" my way along trying to hit a golf ball straight.  I do watch intently a couple of better golfers that I often play with.  Noting how they go about their business, how effortlessly they swing the club.  Then, in my mind, try to replicate it. 

 

My swing became a mess mid-season last year.  Went through a phase of self analysis, trying to figure it out.  Do this, try that, without success.  Then purged all swing thing thoughts from my head.  Reverted back to not thinking about it at all.  Besides some fine tuning of the "setup", took an approach not unlike what Stu mentioned.  See ball, see club face, hit ball.  The only "move" I consciously thought about was dragging the head back 12" before transitioning the move upwards.  Forced me into making a improved backswing (not picking up the club, rotation).  Sounds to basic but it worked.  At least I regained a measure of confidence that I could begin making decent contact and the ball flew straight.  

 

I'm not a range rat by any means.  Only go once or twice a year.  Hitting balls repetitiously becomes boring.  I'll get a large bucket with intentions of working on something with some "structure".  But after 10 swings of thinking about it, on to something else.  Or lets finish this bucket (that I paid for) up and get outta here.  Find that I get more value out of practicing out on the golf course.  I've mentioned this before, but there's a quite mundane course close to home.  Can play 9 holes mid-week, early afternoon and it's not crowded at all.  Solo, play at my own pace, don't concern myself with score, drop and hit extra balls, sometimes playing two balls on a hole.  Think about what I'm doing, try different swing things.  The range boredom is not present because I'm playing golf out on the course.  

 

Likely have just enough layman's understanding of swing to get me through.  Never going to be single digit.  That requires a commitment to improvement that I'm not willing to make.  At this point in life, my swing is my swing.  Kinda now when I get sloppy with execution, and what needs to be done to get it back together.  Two basic and simplistic swing things.  One facet that would realize improvement is more short game practice.  That's more about repetition and feel than swing.  Could easily improve by 5 strokes with improved shot execution.  Bladed chips across the green is just throwing strokes away.  NTM, absolutely infuriating.  

 

Who knows if any of this swing stuff has validity.  I have no reference points, or an observer making critical analysis.  It either works or it doesn't.  And I'm left to my own devices to try and figure it out.  When in total confusion, purge all swing thoughts and "just hit the damn ball" (connect the dots) remains sage advice. 

 

TL;DR "stream of consciousness" posts are what happens when one is up early, in the quiet, swilling coffee.  Chattering about golf stuff.

Don't quite know what to post about TW.  Haven't read much about the circumstances, other than overviews.  However one thinks of him, good, bad, or indifferent, I've feeling empathy for him this morning.  And hoping this was truly a most unfortunate "accident" and not self inflicted in some way.

I have a net at home that I use from time to time. Filmed myself twice and it looked so bad I deleted it and decided to leave well alone. Don't know how to make it look better but I would never show anyone for an opinion as  it could cause a medical incident through laughing too hard.

From what I read he was on his way to a function he was hosting, crossed a highway and crashed into a ditch. Operation finished but he had bad damage to both legs.

Sounds very much like me. I have to admit, that swing search is a big motivator for me. It is nice to fiddle around with all the parameters. I have a nook in my back yard where no neighbour sees. Have these light plastic balls practising after seeing tips on youtube. Or simply thinking. Being an engineer I have some of that TGM thoughts, seeing myself as a mechaninal equation like. I do take an occasional golf lession but only when disaster comes down on the swing.

 

Single HCP was alway my dream, I’ve had the swing for that some periods but my short game was too poor. I’ve stepped up the short game considerably last 10 ys or so, but I’ve been more or less Outside-In just as long.

 

Have been test swinging in the snow, you actually see the impact path quite well. But the last few days something of a heat wave have come down on us here so nearly all snow is gone. Will be interesting to see where the ball goes, The driving range will probably open in a week or so. If there is no corona restrictions. We’ll see.

Might have been that he was a bit late and was a lttle too heavy on the throttle, guess we’ve all been there. Anyways lets of course hope that they can fix him up again, those guys do miracles. But he’ll be gone from golf for quite a while now supposedly.

Personally I don't see Tiger coming back and in a weird way wish he doesn't. 

 

While I consider myself to have witnessed his career I find it hard not to think about his future after having 5 back surgeries and now this accident. As much as I want Tiger to play golf again I want him to have a good happy life more. I now want him to give up competitive golf, and spend his time playing with friends and family and enjoying seeing his children grow up. 

 

He's done enough for golf and the world, now he should focus on himself. 

 

Sadly he might be one of those people that just can't let go and will push his body to try and come back from this also.

In regards to the lesson aspect I always find it interesting that the worse the golfer the less they take lessons (In General) 

 

I have a lesson on average every month. It's more a check up to ensure my swing is still working within the parameters it needs to to function and that no funky moves have creped in. It's also a good chance to discuss with someone if this or that move might be worth including.

 

I will caveat this with the fact that the pro you work with must suit and match your desires. 

 

On the other hand it seems in general that the worse someone's handicap the less they seem to want to take lessons. I don't know why but if more beginners started by taking lessons rather than self teaching they would improve quicker and also have a much better base to start with. 

 

I don't know if this is because new golfers mistakenly think the game is easy and don't need lessons, they are too prideful to take them or can't afford them. 

 

I liken it to driving a car, while in theory it is a vert simple task the reality is that you would never let someone loose in a car without some instruction first. 

 

I don't want this to sound condescending, it's just my opinion as someone who has seen a lot of golfers of varying abilities in the past 25 years. 

 

I would encourage all those who haven't had a lesson to book a small series with a reputable local pro, no one ever truly comes away from a decent lesson a worse player than they went in, and trust me, they will have always seen a worse swing than yours.
