Her issue is she went from complete beginner to 15 handcap index in under 3 years. Then hit the inevitable plateau and started pushing hard to get through it. She went from occcasional lessons to more full on and somewhere along to way got very lost in the wold of swing technicallity. 

 

She's also a big practicer and moves her swing signifucanlty in short amoung od time. Over a year ago she was put on trackman and was hitting 3 degrees out to in on her 7 iron. Our pro make a small change to her swing to get the path a little more neutral since an out to in path is "usually" steeper and since shes only a little over 5' that can cause issues. Therefore a more neutral and this shallow attack angle would be more consistent. 4 months later she was on Trackman and was now 7 degrees in to out. She had moved the needle 10 dgress in a few months. 

 

Speaking to our pro a few weeks ago while on the course we said he needs to stop with the more vague instruction and try actually getting her to hit exact positions an give her more rigid guidlines.

 

Just some ideas from my experiences with juniors…

 

- Making everything internal about their swings at a young age isn’t always fun for them. Sometimes making things external and target focused let’s them figure some things out on their own. Games using a 50 or 75 yard post or target at the range can be fun. Choose any club and call out their shot, e.g. it’s going to land 3 yards left and 8 yards short, take two hops and hit the stick. Have a little family contest and change clubs. Use any irons in the bag.

 

- Have them setup with an iron, then rotate the club in their grip open or closed a lot. Maybe 20-30 degrees. Their goal is to hit a straight shot. They’ll figure it out on their own. They’ll learn about ball position and they’ll adapt their swing naturally. Ice cream if they can do it.

 

- There’s a lot of truth in the axiom that juniors should learn to hit it as far as possible, them work on control.

 

Feel free to disregard this if you choose. Just a suggestion. 🙂

Now, being a cookie monster, she is also a cookie critic and generally only eats the ones

she makes and looks askance at the store bought varieties. One bite though and she raved

about how good the cookie was. It passed the Cobi test. I wasn't surprised considering

where and who the cookies came from. I knew Touch would not hand me a batch of

cookies that would not pass his high standards.

 

Cobi was a little apprehensive about my golf trip out to Asheville to spend time with Touch.

After a few calls and texts while I was there...and the pics of us having a good time, she

moved from apprehension to ease to happiness and ultimately, with the first cookie bite,

to a Touch fan, as am I.

 

 

 

Yes the cookies the Bake Shop makes are fantastic. Here is their latest creation.

Do not watch GC instruction programs or do U-Tube or read golf magazines. Number two Practice Practice Practice exactly what your instructor tells you to do between instructional sessions. That last part I see a lot down here as in people will take lessons from an instructor and expect miracles without practice on what they have been taught. When they do not improve due to lack of practice they want to blame the instructor. Yes people expect miracles without effort. 

Just my.02 from my perspective which I admit is not etched in stone either it is just IMHO

All very good points and very closely match my thoughts however I probably sit alittle more towards the instruction spectrum than you but not by much. 

 

I honestly beleive Hogans comment in Five fundamentals that with good fundamentsals and an able body anyone can break 80. Sadly most dont get the lessons to get good fundamentals when starting golf. Once you have the fundamentals I am more in the swing your swing camp but with 1 caveat - Do what your body needs to do, to make the club do what you WANT it to do. To many people just swing their swing and hope/expect the ball to react how they want. 

 

I gave up long ago trying to fix my slightly inside takeaway, which was a result of a flatter shoulder turn in the backswing than is "conventional". Wasn't until I saw a sports therapist (as part of their training qualifications) that they stated that due to my seperated shoulder when I was a teen my shoulder unit physically won't move into the "conventional" position. At this point I gave up ever trying and tell any instructor who mentions it that I'm not chanign it.

 

This is the main reason I'm a big fan of Mike Adams and Terry Rowles (and all others who follow this concept) because they beleive that your physique dictates a large part of your golf swing.

Like you I eventaully wised up and just said that the committee was always looking for new members and if they join they can have an active part in progressing the club otherwise shut up and be happy with the efforts of those willing to give their time.

Great advice ecepct this is for my 32 year old wife. 

 

She may only be (short) 5'1", young and pretty but even that's a stretch to get her to listen to junior advice lol

I’ve never read such nonsense. Not everyone has the time to work on committees e.g. those who travel for work or have other interests. Your idea would result in helpful suggestions being ignored. Part of your office was dealing with timewasters unfortunately.

Two great friends. I traveled the world with Mike, Terry and Dr. Scott Lynn teaching teachers how to teach. The four musketeers have been to Japan, Korea, China, The Philippines, Australia, New Zealand et al together. Fun times.

That is exactly what I think as in your body dictates your swing---- I am a big proponent of Harvey Pennick and have the "Little Red Book" Not so much for the swing instruction but his insights on the game. One thing that sticks out to me is when he was instructing Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw he stated he showed them different ways for each of them to do things. Now with me I do not want or need anyone poking in my head like a sports therapist. I do not want to know what is in there or why I am like I am. Sometimes it is better to let sleeping dogs lie.

The 9 and dine was a no go today--- After our local weather gurus said there was only a 20% chance of rain we got it. Not in Biblical proportions but a steady drizzle with cold raw air. My bud had already called me and said his wife did not want to play. We were on the phone when the course texted cancelling the event. My other bud called and we discussed it. To give him credit he had told me long ago not to listen to these local yahoos here. That the Weather Channel was accurate and they had called it at 60% this morning when our yokels were calling 20%. Go figure. I was out a while ago and it is like 57* with the wind blowing and drizzling rain and just raw. 

The day was not a loss though. My bud down the street at the golf shop called me. Seems he had done a trade deal and ended up with a matched set of Cally Bertha Steelhead 7 and 9 woods RCH 90 regular shafts. They look like they have never been hit. He wanted $40 for the pair. Since I had like $60 store credit I jumped and went down and got them When I was down there the other week I had said my V-Steel 7 wood was getting old and to be on the lookout for another one same with the 9 wood. He had that in mind when he spotted the Callys. I jumped on those because they are good back ups. Waiting to see what the weather brings tomorrow shootout wise. If it is CPO I am out I will see in the AM

Boys, my iron play sucks! I went back to shovels this year because I thought they would help with my big miss which is hitting it fat. It did help some but when I played cavity back irons with narrower soles my short game so much better. I'm going back to something like the AP2's I played in the spring. I'm disgusted.

I like to take a peek around the bag stand from time to time on busy days and see if I spy any unusual golf clubs. Yesterday from afar I saw a mighty faded headcover that I recognized from a long time ago and wondered if the club underneath matched the cover. When I walked over to that bag I found a whole mess of treasured old school golf equipment in there. WOW I couldn't believe it as there was a Yonex ADX fairway wood under there. The ADX line of drivers and fwys were made out of carbon and these clubs were released in 1996. The current TM Stealth line of woods were not the first carbon faced woods in golf. But wait there was other really cool old stuff in this golf bag. How about an original Karsten Sand Wedge! Look at the patina and hundreds of dings on the vintage Bulls Eye putter. There was also a Titanium Bubble shafted 5 wood. His irons were some 1990's Cobra cavity backs and his driver was a TM RBZ. What a discovery.

Love the dinged up Bullseye putter. Kind of shows how soft and buttery they were. I'm surprised more people didn't use putter head covers.  I'll be taking a hammer to my Bullseye this afternoon.

Looking back on the bubble shafted TaylorMade metals. Well, that proved to be a gimmick. Had it been the real deal, and the patent had run out, you'd see other shaft makers with bubbles.

 

Personally, I prefer my bubbles in champagne.

Yonex was ahead of their time as were Daiwa, and to some extent, Yamaha. I played the Yonex fairways and driver because they were longer than anything available at the time (1989). Coming from the Pittsburgh Persimmon it was difficult to comprehend how a piece of plastic could be more efficient then a piece of metal, but it was . . .

Add in the fact that no standard grip could be used on those bubble shafts when it was time to put fresh grips on them. PITA

Agree. I played a set of these high tech irons back when, and they were longer than anything I had ever hit before.

Funny how some things stick in your head and then become a treasured memory. On Monday night

when Touch took me for the after hours tour of BFCC, we also walked out onto the course in the

dark.......with a flashlight.....and checked out the 1 and 10 tee boxes and the 9 and 18 greens....and

the practice green.

 

I just had to put my hands down on the ground and feel the meticulously maintained turf and,

especially the greens. 

 

Sounds a little silly I suppose but now the image in my mind of us poking around out there in

the dark like kids makes me laugh.  And the next day, when we played, it was getting pretty dark

by the time we got to 18, so we were on that green in the dark yet again, this time trying to

putt in the dark.

 

I'm used to well maintained courses from all my years of playing the RTJ Trail here in Bama, but

TBH, this was another level. Just beautiful.....and a Donald Ross. With our late tee time, we had

the course to ourselves with no pressure from behind so we had the time to savor our

surroundings, take lots of pics, and even goof off a bit. A day I will not forget.
