I like a clever colloquial expression, but the worn-out cliché makes me nuts.

Don’t use 10 words when 2 will do.

If you would not speak that way, don’t write it in an email. Definition of Irony--- "We are riding in a airplane with a bunch of idiots playing a song made famous by a band that was killed in an airplane crash"  Steve Buchemi in "Con Air"

Don’t make a noun into a verb, it is not clever or smart.

“At the end of the day.” Filler. No words are better than these words.

“In this day and age.” What you mean is “now.” Just say “now.”

“Utilize.” This doesn’t mean what you think it means. Unless you mean using something for a task other than its intended purpose, just say “use.”

I could go on and on about being granular, paradigms, and value, but I won’t. I am glad to have the reputation of being direct and plain-spoken, because I do my best not to get sucked into all of that jargon.

My pastor is a world champion of using 10 words when 2 will do. Of course I think it is in all of their DNA or part of Seminary teaching

“The building was completely destroyed.”

All destruction is complete. Either it was or wasn’t.

If you like watching people squirm, ask them to define “irony” without using an example.

I’ve heard Brits say Webster was right. You don’t need a “u” after every “o.”

Two spaces after a period is clinging to the days of typewriters.

An ellipses is space dot, space dot, space dot.

Who decided that lose is now loose?

E.g. is “for example.” I.e. is “in other words.”

Use periods often to write gooder.

After all, we are used to hitting a small little golf ball.

I will admit I butcher the Queen's English all to hell and back. But then again being a southern born and bred redneck country boy I do not apologize one bit. I speak and write like I do. Anyone that does not like it can scroll on down and ignore me.

ow the term "golf the ball" is a real old school term. I heard my old man and all the old timers use it. Basically it has several meanings. It can mean a player knows how to plod his way around the course and / or knows his limitations and strengths and plays to them.

Another term I learned on WRX is "game" as in he likes to game those Eye 2 irons (Ping reference just for you Rad). I use the terms front line game or signature set since I have so many sets and possible combos of vintage sets.

I should qualify that my pet peeves about language are in a business setting.  How someone uses English on a golf forum or in casual conversation to express him/herself is all good by me!

I can sort of see that. But then again I am just me upfront straight in your face and honest. I heard this story 2nd hand. When I was assistant maintenance manager of a trucking company my boss told one of the vendors about me as in--- He is as country as they come but he is as honest as the day is long and will not hold back his opinion good or bad. I will say I am anal on the way I do things sometimes but not anal enough to think my way is the ONE proper way to do things. That was my old man's department.

I don't fret about online spelling, syntax or typos. I make mistakes in most everything I write.. I misspell, mix tenses and write convoluted sentences.

But when you see mistakes by people getting paid to write, it's strange.

I have tried in the past to be gently helpful to a few people who makes consistent mistakes, truly hoping it is helpful is some part of their life where mistakes are being judged by people in business, interviews, business communications, etc. They will notice and not say anything about it. It may affect a job.

I've learned that they just get their nose out of joint about it, so never again. I was a fool to think they would take it as helpful.

It’s not so much being a grammarian that I’m mentioning here. It’s more staying clear of some of the ridiculousness you see in American business communication — my pet peeve.

Seriously I do not hit off of mats for several reasons. First off I really hit down on the ball and it does make my wrists hurt. Now days I do not due to the fact it will get my back started. Second I have seen too many cubs wrecked especially graphite shafts from hitting off of mats.

Now when I do my mat and net work here at the house I use some of my older steel shafted wedges and clip the ball off the mat. Most of my mat work is to keep my body loose and practice a clip shot. If I do get serious I will back up and hit off my grass. But no as far as going to a range and hitting a bucket of balls off a mat that is out for me

Stu, you and I fully agree there must be a trillion ways to send that rock down range.  Since the beginning there have been pickers and diggers.  They both must be right (for themselves).

To lay my cards on the table, I’ve seen uncountable golfers gouge a range up so badly it takes weeks for their mess to heal.   I know you’ve seen it as well over the years.  And these same folks can snap any club shaft in the dirt as easily as they can on a mat.

Rather than say exactly what you just said, they justify their ruination of grass tees by blaming it on mats.  Not all mats are created equally.  But all 8” deep divots are the same.

lol- It’s that group of mat haters I was sarcastically poking fun at.

In fact, you get a long email from a ceo,

I have Tiger's first book sitting around the house somewhere. I remember reading him talking

about his WITB and golf fans always wanting to see what he was playing. He said as soon as

they would look he could see the disappointment on their face when all they saw was a steel

driver and 3 wood and a bunch of old beat up blades and wedges.
