How do players like Jean Bartholemew get into the field? Scored 90, 19 over par. One 8 and one 9 on par 3s..... ?

Without looking her up, I'll assume she's one of the PGA of America members that qualified.

No Jerry Foltz at a major is disappointing.

She is a Teaching and Club Professional that finished 2nd in their National Championship last year. The top eight of their Championship are entered into the LPGA Championship.

Cool stuff with everyone congratulating Inbee Park after she finished her round.

What's the deal with the flowers and congrats after a first round?

She just became the youngest player ever to qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame.

Wow. Congrats, Inbee. That was a gutsy performance. 'Very touching to see the other HoF members and players on the 18th. Hopefully her thumb will cooperate, and allow her to finish the tournament, and possibly vie for the win. I'm quite sure she'd want to do that if physically possible. I really hope she decides to play for a few more years. She's a class act.

Otherwise, it was a great first round. The course looks great, and certainly has some teeth. It's setting up for a solid major. No big surprises on the leaderboard. The top players did not play themselves out of it, and the hot hands also put up good results, e.g. Christina.

Sahalee looks in great shape, this should be a real test.

I thought junior Inbee was recognizable without a doubt. Younger, less wear and tear, little less weight, but still definitely her. She can thank Lorena for the honor of youngest inductee to date. And Dame Laura is still looking for that elusive point or two.

The TCP players deserve their moment. By the weekend, nobody will remember them in the booth, except maybe Judy.

Too soon to call this by a long ways, expect Saturday to be a great round to watch

I can't think of any other sporting event that doesn't start with the most competitive field, especially a major. Doesn't make much sense to me - surely their achievements can be honoured in other ways?

Um, you forgot the Masters and the men's PGA Championship. Personally, I have zero issue with a handful of spots given out to past champions (i.e. Masters) or PGA Pros. It doesn't affect the quality of the field, doesn't undermine the achievement of the eventual winner. It's good to see the game of golf honor a set of individuals who have contributed to the game as past champs or outside the ropes.

Yes, I was thinking about past champions.... I think that's a bit different, and it's nice to see legends play again, but in scoring terms I agree it isn't a level playing field. I'm thinking a bit of all the Rolex ranked players who don't get to play. Wonder how they feel....

I was impressed that she got through the round. Kinesiology tape works wonders. But the docs said that only rest will heal it; surgery won't help. I think after this tournament she's going to shut it down for a while. To plod round that place at E par is an achievement. She had birdie chances, but I'm sure her thumb was talking to her all day, especially on the short 3 footer she missed.

The Men's PGA Championship also includes the Top 20 finishers in the PGA Professional Championship, and it's generally considered the strongest field top to bottom of any of the men's majors.

The entrance qualifications are no secret. The lower ranked players know they have to improve to get into the tournament.

I agree. I think we may see her next at the Ricoh Women's British Open, which would give her 7 additional weeks to heal.

I have to go with the hot hand, Ariya. I expect her to play a 2 iron off the tee on half the holes. Lydia's form has been off a bit as of late, but if she can get a good first round, she'll be in the hunt. Brooke has been playing steady, but she seems to be missing that final ingredient that puts her in contention on Sunday. Lexi is long and straight enough, but will her putter show up?

Dark horse pick is Christina.

I know I'm jinking myself, but Christina is playing solid golf. How about that 2 iron Ariya hit on #16? She rolled it past Inbee's driver. Stinger.

My wife said, "Those are big girls." I spit out my coffee when she said that! :)

But they use their size to their advantage and are crazy long.

This is weird. Nobody is making any kind of move. Usually in an LPGA tournament a bunch of players would have shot 63 or 64 by this point and the whole front page re-arranged. At this rate I am guessing something like -5 or -6 could win come Sunday.

As Judy mentioned, the trees make the course play even tighter. The rough is not a big factor, but being out of position in the fairway means having to work the ball around a tree, or having to hit a low runner. The greens don't look overly difficult, but getting the ball into birdie range sure does. On top of that there's the length. They usually play 6300 - 6400 yards, but this is playing 6800 yards, and they had rain yesterday.

Seems like a tough course - only 3 rounds in the 60s on round one, and seems hard to get to -1 today even, so far at least..... Nobody making a break for it.

Course difficult, you seen the same with previous majors when the course is set up though, ladies get into trouble due to lacking distance or hitting it to wild from tee.

anyhow second round be interesting to follow

Knows the secret to the golf swing to own it.
300+ yards and 4% dispersion for unmatched accuracy

Hard to have both the distance and the driving accuracy...

Mo Martin is 1st for accuracy, but lacks length. Lexi is long but 80-ish for accuracy. Tops for driving accuracy are players like Stacy Lewis, Anna Nordqvist, Ai and Mika Miyazato, Na Yeon Choi, Pornanong Phatlum, Jenny Shin, Ha Na Jang, In Gee Chung, H.J.Kim, So Yeon Ryu.....

But whether that's a deciding factor remains to be seen.
