New Titleist 917 driver: shot at the 2016 Quicken Loans National

Recommended Posts

I'm glad they aren't putting out new gimmicks every year. Consistency is what makes for a good golfer. The 915 D3 has been the most consistent driver I've ever owned. Before that was the 913D3 and before that a very similar profile Cobra Amp Cell. I hit fairways more often than not with the 915. That's the best way to gain distance. I have yet to hit the M1 or M2 that mythical 30 yards past my titleist. I have enough things to worry about on the course. Just give me something that is consistent and reliable year after year so I can focus on my golf game and score.

Is the 917 adapter different than the 915? Or are they the same?

Same.

I hit the line yesterday. Very good. Shapes are more refined and the sound is much improved.

You say shapes are "more refined." Would you say the 917 D2 profile is a little less C-shaped (or a little less pancake-y) than the 915 D2?

I hope it feels more like the 910/913 series, one of my biggest quips with the 915 is the feel.

if you think the 915 feels bad, don't hit the M1. Yes, the 913 was like butter, but the 915 doesn't feel that bad. Most of the drivers on the market feel worse to me.

Haha, I've hit the M1 and that was one of my biggest issues was no matter where you hit it, it felt god awful. 915 is pretty good compared to almost everything out there, just being difficult and wanting that butter feel again.

I agree the M1 felt terrible, I did hate the 915 though, it was too high pitched. I play the harder Z Star XV though so maybe the has an effect. I was using spray and know i was hitting the center of the face. People can defend the 915 all they want, if it doesnt sound terrible to you then you should see a specialist and make sure ear damage has not caused you to go deaf to higher tones.

The 815 DBD and Vapor Fly Pro are the best sounding and feeling drivers I have hit in a while. Really hoping the 917 sounds more like those drivers.

I take your 815DBD and the Vapor Fly Pro and raise you the Nike Vapor Flex. The sweetest feeling driver when struck on the sweet spot. That thing was/is butta....

standing beside Kyle Stanley while he hit his vapor flex this weekend that I would absolutely say that it is the worst sounding driver I have ever heard in my life. It sounded broken. Same thing for I believe it was Pinckney. Horrible. When they hit we all looked at each other like the face was busted.

Just scheduled my fitting for Sept 15th, the rep will be at my club with the full lineup!

Outside + Trackman, can't wait!!!

I'm surprised it's available this soon. Perhaps it's for preorders and it won't be shipped until Nov?

Pre-orders starting mid September, with release 10/20 says a little birdie...

Had this confirmed today. No fitting guide or literature as of yet, at least that my person had received.

The new stock shafts are Diamana D+ and S+ LE, Rogue MAX, Fuji speeder pro. Still using Fujis from last year too as well as rogue black and silver.

Adapters are same on driver and FW as 915.

I got my 917D2 and 917 F a few weeks ago, the shape of D2 is very 910ish, looks way better than 915. It looks great! It sounds awesome too, I'm getting almost same spin with 917 D2 as 915 D3 in same loft, shaft.

No, not tinny at all. Please see Ping or the M1 drivers for tinny....

I must say the video says something else. Imo the 915 is tinny as well. I was hoping the 917 wasn't

Is there going to be a D+ LE model or just the current D+PLUS and a S+ LE? I can't seem find anything on the D+ LE.

Is the D3 440cc still?

So just had a chat with a reliable local contact regarding the new 917. Here are some of the highlights:

-same/similar launch as the 915

-lower spin, assuming around 10% less from what I've heard

-improved acoustics

-price will increase because of the surefit CG

-Pro's are seeing 2-3mph ball-speed increase, especially on off center hits because of the surefit CG

-917 fairways are apparently easier to elevate and are a few yards longer

I'm hoping they're very similar to the 910 series in terms of sound, but the sound doesn't seem to be as obnoxious as the initial run of 915's. It is however a video, and interpretation is in the eye of the beholder.

I know it's not going to happen, but I wish the D3 would come in a 12* loft... I have a lot of shaft lean at impact and need the extra loft, but I prefer the pear shaped woods rather than the flatter more elongated shape... I know the 10.5* D3 can be cranked up to 12*, but I also can't stand looking at a closed/shut face at address... Maybe one day...

I was quoted in an email today from the guy that does my club work $460 and I can place my order today. Now place my order today could possibly mean they are taking orders, or he'll hold my specs and put it in when the time comes to actually place the order. But regardless he told me I could pay today, $460. I asked for the stock D+ shaft, basically stock (cuz I'm picking up an Ahina 70s to do a head to head with my current driver, and I believe I asked for a Lamkin Cord Crossline grip but not positive, so could be $10 +/-).

EDIT:: That quote is without the added grip, basically straight stock. Also does anyone know for sure if Titliest tips driver shafts at all before installing their their driver shafts? Mitsubishi site says zero tipping but I thought since its in the adapter and not straight into the hosel it needed .5" of tipping.

With the assistance of our Titleist Sales Rep and Tech Rep I conducted a Titleist Staff Fitting Day for our Chapter PGA Members this past Wednesday and results were VERY good. First impression of the D3 and D2 were VERY classic in shape... the D3 had a very pronounced classic pear shape and the D2, yes similar to the original 910, was more round and more pleasing in shape over the 915. The 917 D2 almost had a smaller appearance to my eye and less of a dinner plate look. Sound is amazing and both drivers are very neutral weight bias..

Every professional including my self saw more consistency with ball speed across the face especially when using the throw weight to match up with one's consistent off center hits. Personally I saw spin rates decrease from my 915 D2 about 200-300 which really made this parameter for my conditions more optimal. The most interesting part of the new 917 is indeed the movable CG which is completely different than any other moveable CG on the market... For me it really didn't make the club head release faster (draw) or slower (fade) with the weight moved to the heel or toe respectively... If your misses are consistent in the heal (as are mine) the ball speed reduction was almost nil with the throw weight moved into the draw setting (heel) and vise verse with consistent toe strikes. I don't remember any of the professionals that were fitted using a fade CG position, all were either neutral or draw CG.

The fairway wood was amazingly quiet with a solid "hot" sound. Extremely easy to launch over the 915 with the same or even less spin. Both the driver and fairway are the best looking, sounding, performing woods I have ever hit.

I believe it has already been noted in this thread but here is a basic run up of the STOCK shaft offerings and is it important to note that ALL DRIVERS AND FAIRWAYS WILL BE SHIPPING WITH BOTH A NUETRAL WEIGHT AND THE THROW WEIGHT (draw and fade setting)...
