New Titleist 917 driver: shot at the 2016 Quicken Loans National

Recommended Posts

I can't wait to see some side by side launch monitor testing... 915d2 vs 917d2. I'm very interested in this driver.

First impression of the sound... I think it's better than the 915.

Sounds great! A lot like the 910 series....and the 190mph ball speed of Loupe is pretty sick....

Really looking forward to the 917 release. Great video!

If you are a D3 player you gonna stick to the same in the 917? The 917 D2 looks more C shaped to me. Is the D3 more of a pear shape?

Stood behind Loupe hitting balls on the range for a few hours and the guy is made of rubber or something. My back hurts just watching the guy hit a ball.

Pretty much everyone on tour has switched quickly to the 917. The MIT prototype was a monster, so I don't see why this wouldn't be an improvement. It's a no brainer. I hope the price doesn't spike to $500.

On the video 0.43 sec, whats the deal with the hammer?

This is going to be the driver and fairway going in the bag.

That's where the hotmelt port is on the 917, so probably just punching the tiny plastic cap/cover in on a new head.

Loved that video!

Frustrating for me to watch in one way because I'm injured at the moment and can't play but awesome at the same time because it has me even more excited to get back playing and look to switch up to a 917 as soon as possible. I'm pretty sure that not playing for at least three months, I need to treat myself right?

Good question - I think that I may go the D2 route myself, and I've been using the D3 shape going all the way back to the 909. I hit the D3 consistently, and always have, but the added forgiveness can't hurt. The shape of the D2 may be a drag at first, but I've read several posts of guys who made the switch and didn't seem to notice it much after a few rounds.

With that said, I may change my mind and stay with the familiar D3.

I clearly didn't answer that question...

I found that funny as well. Loupe is obviously long, but his game is lacking in most other areas to consistently contend on the PGA Tour.

Great video of course--but I noticed they focused on the the surefit hosel and the movable weight. Neither of those are particularly new to the driver world. I am particularly if they made the face thinner, or hotter. Does anyone know if the face is new on 917 or same as 915?

The 915 face was so thin, they had to add mass to the center of the face to slow it down. Center strikes are maxed out. Off center strikes could possibly pick up some ball speed, but i can't imagine it's much.

The surefit hosel is always mentioned because it's one of the few offerings on the market that is multi-dimensional. The speed slot and weights have been on the market for a while, but it's newer for Titleist. They've done R&D on those things for years, but always avoided visible technology. They've decided to blend visible technology with classic looks, and I think it's working well.

The 917 seems to be a fine tuned 915. If people dislike the 915, I have a feeling they won't feel much better about the 917. If they like the 915, they'll love the 917. That's my opinion.

Now that visible technology is off the charts in the industry, I think the gloves are off. They can push the clubs as far as they want, but they will likely never cross the line and get away from something that looks classic at address.

Interesting...I feel my 915 does not have the explosiveness that say a Callaway or the M2 does. I feel I control the 915 better than other drivers, but need all the yards I can get. The sound does not bother me at all. Vis a vis the 915 then, do we feel the promises of max distance from other OEMs are attributable to (a) BS; and or (b) a longer shaft?

on center strikes, the differences in the offerings on the market come down to launch conditions... optimum launch angle and spin for your swing.
