New Titleist 917 driver: shot at the 2016 Quicken Loans National

Recommended Posts

All these new drivers are within yards of each other. Don't let anyone fool you!!....Period!......I get all the new stuff handed to me every year for free and nothing is significantly better...........Not the King, the M1/M2, G30.......No big difference.......

But...but... the guys from Titleist say it's longer!?? So your saying they are not telling us the truth??? Haha! I have to agree with you. The marketing is the same ever other year. I swear copy and paste the same thing. 2 mph more ball speed and 10 yards more carry. However... I will be trying this bad boy out. Loved the 910d3, hated the 913, hate the sound of the 915 series but loved the performance. If the 917 performance is even slightly better than the 915 and the sound is significantly better, I'll have one in the bag.

Titleist 917 Prototype Drivers Update - PGA Championship

There's some notable Titleist 917 news coming out of the PGA Championship at Baltusrol. Titleist Brand Ambassador Byeong Hun (Ben) An won the long drive contest on Tuesday using his new Titleist 917D3 (8.5°), striping one 347 yards to claim the gold money clip prize.

An was one of our more interesting fits when we first brought the drivers to Congressional, as he took the 917 out for a practice round almost immediately after receiving the club from our tour staff. His first drive during Wednesday's pro-am that week carried over 300 yards and he's kept the 917D3 in his bag since. An's feedback was that "my misses seem to stay right on line and no doubt it's longer than my 915D4."

Another player off to a hot start at Baltusrol is Jimmy Walker. The first round leader began testing early 917 driver prototypes in January at the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, California, and he put his new Titleist 917D2 (8.5°) in play at his first opportunity at Firestone earlier this month.

Overall, 19 players are trusting Titleist 917 drivers at Baltusrol, including:

Byeong-Hun (Ben) An - 917D3 (8.5)

Jason Bohn - 917D3 (9.5)

Greg Chalmers - 917D2 (8.5)

George Coetzee - 917D3 (10.5°)

Jason Dufner - 917D2 (10.5°)

Bill Haas - 917D2 (9.5°)

Charley Hoffman - 917D2 (8.5°)

Thongchai Jaidee - 917D2 (9.5°)

Andrew "Beef" Johnston - 917D3 (10.5°)

Patton Kizzire - 917D3 (10.5°)

Peter Malnati - 917D2 (8.5°)

Adam Scott - 917D2 (9.5°)

Webb Simpson - 917D3 (10.5°)

Josh Speight* - 917D2 (8.5°)

Justin Thomas - 917D3 (9.5°)

Cameron Tringale - 917D3 (8.5°)

Omar Uresti* - 917D2 (8.5°)

Jimmy Walker - 917D2 (8.5°)

Wyatt Worthington II* - 917D3 (9.5°)

I'm curious why Jordan Spieth hasn't made the switch yet.

While I agree that generally drivers are all relatively equal in terms of performance/distance--I think the 917 has to be measured against the 915 or other Titleist offerings moreso than M1 or Cally. The latter two have been on the full scale distance pursuit for years. I don't know that Titleist has. I do know that when the staff did the sales pitch for the 716 AP1's they were emphasizing distance in a way Titleist had not done before, according to people who were on the calls. If the 917 has joined the distance race, then it might be longer than other Titleist drivers (but not maybe M1).

I was also told by Titleist that they created the movable weight on the new 917 to enable them to weight the club quickly for tour player preference. The tour van often had to internally weight the driver for specific players. This new feature allows them to do it quickly.

Does this mean they don't expect to be doing much hot melt in the future?

Beautiful avatar, sir.

I hope it feels more like the 910/913 series, one of my biggest quips with the 915 is the feel.

I get a pretty good laugh out of all of the complaints about the sound of the 915 drivers. I have no problem with the sound. Try it out with real balls instead of range or hitting bay rocks. Completely different animal. I've heard plenty of complaints about the G30 being loud. Same deal there. Both also have a much better sound when hit in the sweet spot.

if you think the 915 feels bad, don't hit the M1. Yes, the 913 was like butter, but the 915 doesn't feel that bad. Most of the drivers on the market feel worse to me.

sometimes people have issues with the sound because they hit them in an indoor golf shop simulator. if you hit them on the course people are much less likely to have an issue with it, or even think about it.

I agree the M1 felt terrible, I did hate the 915 though, it was too high pitched. I play the harder Z Star XV though so maybe the has an effect. I was using spray and know i was hitting the center of the face. People can defend the 915 all they want, if it doesnt sound terrible to you then you should see a specialist and make sure ear damage has not caused you to go deaf to higher tones.

The 815 DBD and Vapor Fly Pro are the best sounding and feeling drivers I have hit in a while. Really hoping the 917 sounds more like those drivers.

Jimmy likes the 917. Jimmy likes winning majors. Jimmy switched to the 917 and won a major. Jimmy doesn't think that's a coincidence. Jimmy thinks you should buy a 917.

Any others hit the 917 Driver yet? A couple 917 players finished pretty high in the PGA Championship. That's pretty quick to switch from the 915 imo.

It sounds (from testimonials from people here) and the Tour results that this could be the best release Titleist has had since the 910.

Let's hope. ?

Everyone complaining about the 915's sound: go find an old dog or kids toy that has the synthetic stuffing in it (polyfill). Grab you a good handful of the stuffing and stuff it into the head from the weight screw hole. It was a drastic improvement for me and only cost 30 min of my time.

I remember reading a suggestion like this when the 915's (or was it 913's) were first released.

I seem to recall there was possibly an issue with regard to rules compliance depending on what you put in there. That would never confront a club golfer but maybe at a higher level of competition..?

As long as it can't move inside the head it is conforming.
