Why there can't be a Tiger now

Common man you are the one comparing him to Tiger. I think the kid has some huge huevos and great ability to score but comparing to either the best or top 2 player ever is a bit of a stretch.

Hell everyone wet their pants for Rory a few years ago. To me what he was doing was more impressive at the time than Speith now. And look how he has fallen off. It's just hard to sustain being that good for that long.

I'm comparing him at his age now to Tiger at the same age.

That is hardly an outrageous thing, since I've already laid out a few records he's set or broken or tied. He's the youngest (and first teenager) in history to win a Tour event (not Jack, or Tiger or Rory). He's broken the low 36 hole at Augusta (not Tiger or Jack or anybody...Spieth). He's equaled the low 72 at Augusta (w/ Tiger). He's the youngest ever to win two majors and the youngest ever to win two majors in one year. Tiger fanboys still butthurt I have the audacity to see pretty obvious parallels in their progression.

Tiger had a big third/fourth season, so therefore it will be a more accurate assessment after Spieth's third/fourth seasons. Spieth is going to be BLAZING to get back his Green Jacket after the one he gave away this year, and I will not be surprised to see him get it back at all...he destroyed the field there in his record tying 2015 year and he will want to prove this year was an aberration. Then we will see what he does in the next 10 majors to keep pace with Tiger.

If he is already so far ahead by your math why not extend the lead? Why just keep pace? Being so good you would think he could and would. :)

What are you talking about? The 2015 Masters was the easiest that golf course ever played for the tournament. Nobody had ever shot -14 under and finished second before and 2 guys did it that year. Jordan did a great job by closing out a major by 4 shots but -18 isn't nearly as impressive when you only win by 4. When Tiger won the 97 Masters at -18 he won it by 12 shots. Look Spieth is good but your grasping at straws trying to compare him to Tiger. His win % is a fraction of TW so all you can lean on is majors. Maybe he keeps pace but I seriously doubt it.

'Cause Tiger goes on a tear his third and fourth seasons unlike what we've seen in recent memory.

I don't foresee such a fantastic fall from grace like Tiger with Spieth though, so I suspect Spieth will be winning majors into his 40s. Even if Spieth doesn't win 4-5 majors in the next few years I see his career lasting longer than Woods' as well.

Nobody's grasping at straws. Give me a break. I have (now three or four times) pointed out some feats that Spieth did that Tiger never did. Winning on Tour in his teens, winning two majors in one season, younger than Tiger when he got to two majors. Those are facts the Tiger fanboys can't come to terms with.

No one saw Tigers fall coming either. :( As far as Tiger fans feeling butthurt..... let Spieth do it first. Their really is no such thing as "on pace to" with regards to lifetime achievements. We have seen to many early stars flame out early-Tiger-Arnie-Watson-Seve- and not maintain there youthful stats. We have also seen many late bloomers like Phil(as regards majors).

If Spieth can achieve what you see in his future it would be fun to watch. Personally I do not see it happening but time will tell.

Kidding, kidding.

It's not that anybody is upset, it's more

Why don't you see if Spieth even comes close to being anywhere near where TW was in a couple of years? You know *this* game, he could full well he could end up with one majors and a few wins.

Spieth is not playing the same game as Tiger Woods.

People said the same thing about Rory, he's gonna beat Tiger! And yet here he is with 4 majors when TW had 8 at his age. Now, Rory would have to win 5 majors in 2 years to keep pace with TW.

I remember all the fanboys (there were a lot more of them then) on the old Golf Channel discussion board saying how he was a lock to pass Jack in 2010 because the major venues that year set up so well for him. He was going to finish with 25 majors, minimum.

For the fifth (or eighth) time now: SPIETH HAS DONE SOME THINGS TIGER NEVER DID. Tiger NEVER won on Tour in his teens. Tiger NEVER won two majors in one year at the age that Spieth did (Spieth did that a couple years BEFORE Tiger did it); Tiger NEVER had two major victories until the last major of his third season on Tour. I've listed them enough now. You want to deny that, great. I don't.

All of us-Tiger fans and Spieth fans alike-have accepted your FACTS!! And Dealt with it. Your facts are what they are and are all well and good. But those FACTS are nothing until he builds on them. Yes Spieth is the 4th youngest to win on tour ever (not the youngest as you stated). http://www.pgatour.com/statsreport/2013/07/14/youngest-pga-tour-champions.html Tiger is still I believe the youngest to win a major.

Almost forgot-FACT! :)

Joe-Spieth is a fine young player. Give him time-let the dust settle-and see where the career takes him. Just a suggestion.

We see your point but you don't seem to see ours. Look the kid is good and did a COUPLE of things younger than TW. Would you like me to list the things Tiger did before JS? Because I promise that is a much longer list.

FYI I'm not a Tiger fanboy. But you are comparing one of the most dominant, if not the most dominant player in golf history to a kid who has more missed cuts at age 23 than TW has missed in his entire career. Common man. Woods has missed 15 cuts at age 40 and Spieth has missed 17 at age 23.

And of Woods 15 missed cuts 6 in '14 & '15. That is an absurd level of consistency especially when coupled with his winning percentage.

People forget that it was bigger news when Tiger missed a cut than when he won a major 10 years ago. At least I know it was for me.

People said the same thing about Tiger, he's gonna beat Jack!

I remember all the fanboys (there were a lot more of them then) on the old Golf Channel discussion board saying how he was a lock to pass Jack in 2010 because the major venues that year set up so well for him. He was going to finish with 25 majors, minimum.

This is the point ; )

And you still struggle to see MY POINT: Spieth is the first in history to do some things that had never been done before; you can't accept that, I get it, but it is FACT. Deal with it.

No, you're just not understanding that your "point" isn't factual. Tiger did LOTS of things Jack never did...and here we are in 2016, and Jack is still king. Whether you predict that Spieth won't fall off the wagon personally, like Tiger did, it's an even bigger leap to think he can keep winning like Tiger did...even Tiger couldn't keep winning like Tiger did

Well you got me there.

BUT...if we quantify the greatest of all time - the greatest to ever play - we flat out judge them on MAJOR VICTORIES. And that was where I was coming from all along...Spieth won his first two at an eariler age than Mr. Woods, and he won two (almost three, of course, he fell short at St. Andrews) in one single year three years before Tiger ever did it.

We will judge Jordan Spieth - when it's all said and done - by his major victory tally...and as it stands currently he is on a better pace than Tiger.

Actually it is a dead heat right now-correct? Jordan has 2 at the age of 23 as did Tiger. Jordan just needs to win three next year to keep even. :)

I am not a fan of quantifying a players career based upon majors. Right now Spieth is at 8 and 2. If he retires at 24 and 6 that will be an all time great type of career. Only 12 men have won at least 6 majors. But in my opinion still behind Phil's career of 42 and 5 or Byron Nelson's carer of 52 and 5.

I would hate to denigrate a player like Billy Casper because he only won 3 majors while winning 51 times on tour.

If you want to split hairs, Spieth has 3 more chances at age 23, while Tiger got his second at his last "age 23" major.... so Spieth is ahead. But then the tsunami starts.

His major total will correspond to his PGA tour win total. And he will most likely have the highest percentage of major wins to PGA Tour wins earlier in his career than later.

I see Spieth as more of a Tom Watson. Not the longest but devastating short game when he is on.

And, I think he should be very competitive for a long time.

His shortcomings will be the lack of length, especially as players keep getting longer, and his putting most likely will start to fade a bit into his 30s as it did with Watson.

I think to win like TW and Jack, you gotta dominate the par 5s like they did. It basically "shrank par" for them and often made par 72s into par 70s. That's a huge advantage over 4 rounds.

Then why was Tiger so fixated on Jack's 18? How many times over the years have we heard him say the 18 (19) majors was his ultimate goal?

Others could comment on this better than I can but I believe that Tiger's focus on majors really switched the way everybody (golfers and media) looked at the numbers.

You will see the argument on here all the time about what numbers matter. In offering my opinion, I believe you have to look at the whole body of work.

To each his own. I don't think there is a correct answer.

I just don't see Jordan getting to 14 majors. He very well may but I just don't see it. But even if he does get to 14 majors he still has to get close to Tiger on total wins. That again is going to be very tough to do.

I've heard Tiger say he had always had two numbers in mind: Jack's 18 and Snead's 82 (which was probably more like 80 when Tiger was a kid, due to the reclassification of historic Open Championships).

In any event, saying that majors are all that matters seems pretty silly. About 80% of most players' schedules are _not_ majors.

I've not read the whole 14 pages but the stuff in the OP is the same kind of thing that was being said in the late 80's-early 90's about why no one will ever dominate like Nicklaus and we all know how that worked out. It might take another 10yrs but someone will come along and dominate.

No One will dedicate / isolate / alienate themselves from the world like TW did ... Golf is an "individual" sport and it's "I" vs "Them" and you're lonely on that island.

But the worlds loves you - cause you're DOMINATED / You Put they Word not allowedE$ in the Seats / You Upped the GATES.

Actually, it was Jack. Before Jack there was very little attention paid to majors.
