New $500 Flightscope personal launch monitor (MERGED)

Recommended Posts

I agree that I love all the features of mine and the unit feels like a high quality product. The software is stable now and the missed shots are minimal. Just having the ability to tweak clubs and ball changes is worth the price of admission. When would I ever get to hit 24 Driver shots with a New Prov1x on a golf course and try to measure the results where I know for sure this ball is better then this ball. I would be out there like a survey crew with my laser and tape measure let alone factor in course conditions. I find it easier when I'm doing swing changes to see actual results and compare daily results. I have a Rogue Silver Stiff shaft and X flex shaft and compared them both and have numbers to prove that the X flex spins less and produces better ball speed and trajectory. I use both an Ipad and a IPhone and they both upload their data to Flightscopes web site so when I'm sitting on the couch I can review my results. I only hit with mine into a net and no, Almost golf balls do not register anything other then ball speed and sometimes not even that.

Curious how well it handles hitting into a net. Thinking of one for my backyard and wondering if it'll work into a net, and if so, how far from the net will you need for best accuracy.

Second question, will this work with practice balls (e.g. Almost Balls) or do they have to be real golf balls?

I use mine exclusively into the net. As you approach and exceed 160 MPH of ball speed, the mevo starts missing a ton of shots and setup becomes more finicky. I think I'll eventually upgrade to a SkyTrack for spin axis and more reliability but I think the mevo is well worth the money. If I don't go skytrack, It'll allow me to wait much longer and see what comes to the consumer space.

Good to know it works into a net. Curious how you're all getting spin numbers ... I believe you need to put a dot on every single ball? How many dots does it come with, and does minute changes on where you position the dot change outcome (ie. This shot the dot is bottom right of the ball, next shot the dot is top left of the ball)?

The dots seem to make the biggest difference for higher spinning clubs (wedges) than on the driver. I'm not sure how misaligning the dot may affect total spin but they tell you to put the dot facing the target.

Looks like my driveway is sloping 2*. I will find something to shim the mat up.

How far behind you is the minimum the unit needs to be?

Mine stays at 4 feet for every shot. I move the net from 8' from the ball to 10' from the ball with the driver only. If I use a bigger net I would set it all up at 10' and forget it.

How does this work on the range where you're constantly moving the ball after every shot. Are you moving the Mevo too to compensate for changes in ball position?

Once I set Mevo down at range or at home I just eyeball where the ball should be . I do use a tape measure to make sure ball is 4 feet in front of Mevo. Once I get that mark i usually stick a tee in the mat so I know where the 4 ft mark is . As far as the ball being lined up with the Mevo I just eyeball it and it works perfectly.

Do you really need a ruler? your driver is 44" or a bit longer, add a few inches, about the width of your palm and you are pretty close to 48"

New app update - "firmware update for the sensor"

This was the first time I had updated the firmware. Basically, you update your mobile device and then connect to the mevo. You are then asked if you'd like to update the firmware (hardware level update). It would interesting to know what this update is for..?

Took about 15 minutes to complete firmware upgrade. I will try it out tomorrow.

This is great info guys!!! Thank you all for posting your feedback and reviews. I do have a question for those of you who have one. I live in an apartment and have a storage space where I have a practice net and mat setup for my own personal driving range. Now I would like to know what would be the minimum space between ball and net that is needed in order to get accurate results. Any feedback would be greatly appreciative.

10' from ball to net for driver and 8' for everything else.

Tested the Mevo against a GC2+HMT. Numbers quoted below are estimated difference between what GC2 reported and what Mevo reported.

On a PW:

  • Ball speed: mean 0mph, stdev 1mph
  • Launch angle: mean -2degs (GC2 consistently read 2deg lower), stdev 2degs
  • Clubhead speed: mean 0mph, stdev 1mph
  • Carry distance (calculated) mean +3yds, stdev 4yds. Different ball physics model probably.

On the driver:

  • Ball speed mean 0mph, stdev 1mph
  • Launch angle mean 0, stdev 1.5degs
  • Clubhead speed mean +2mph (GC2 read higher), stdev 5mph (GC2 was bang-on consistent, Mevo was all over the map)

So basically the ball speed is excellent, launch angle quite good, and CHS good for short irons. Maybe Mevo gets confused with the driver, what with the weird shape and color and materials and such.

I came away more impressed with the Mevo than I was. It's a really good piece of equipment.

I'm wanting to use for driver setup and testing. So are you saying the driver #s aren't accurate?

Any other of you guys have driver specific feedback?

You can trust the ball speed.

I guess I'm noticing better performance after the firmware upgrade. I'm missing far less shots. I'm going to move back to the 8' and see if drivers are picked up.

I noticed I was picking up wedge pitch shots more reliably beginning around 30-40 yards. Anyone get launch angles higher than 45*? I think it's the max so if you are actually 50* it is still going to show 45.

Yeah, and that's by far the most important thing for driver fitting. Launch angle matters a bit, and spin almost not at all (typically the difference between 2k rpm and 3k rpm is like 3 yards of carry, according to the FS optimizer).
