New $500 Flightscope personal launch monitor (MERGED)

Starting to think the club head speed measurement on the Mevo isnt that great. I had a few 150mph ball speed readings where the club head speed was anywhere from 98-107mph. My SSR read between 108-112 for all of them.

 

My experience has been that SSR's are reliable and therefore useful for tracking changes in clubhead speed, but not very accurate. They tend to read a bit fast.

 

The newest Firmware 1.6 seems to have the club head speed readings closer to my SSR now. I was disappointed when I'm hitting 268 yard drives and the club head speed read 98mph. Now it reads 107mph for the same ball speed. Smash factor actually seems more realistic now. When you have a true "pure" strike on the ball you can actually see it in the numbers. I have had a few iron shots where I thought I pured it and I look at the numbers and they all add up now. I'm happy enough now to put the SSR away and only use it for Overspeed training. 2 months in and my 2nd Mevo, I can say the product has improved 10 fold since it was released.

Question for you guys hitting into the net... I know this doesn’t give side spin or face angle or any of the things that trackman price level monitors give, which is understandable because of the price.

 

My question is this: How do you know if you sliced or hooked a ball when hitting into a net, or even a slight fade or draw? I know when I’m on the range and I hit some bad shots, slice /hook, they will feel different coming off the club. Other times though I will feel like I hit a great shot but it just slices/hooks away... In the same manor i have hit bad feeling shots off center but they still have flow straight but just a few yards short.

 

Is there anything in the data that gives those types of bad shots away like less spin on ball compounded with less carry distance?

 

If I flush one at the range and it has unexpected curvature, I first consider the range ball itself may have been the issue.

 

That said, in my experience, the MEVO tends to read shots that I know would curve as having less spin than those I know would go straight or relatively straight.

I sold my first Mevo for a little over $600 on eBay. Ebay fees are out of control and it cost $90 is seller fees. Im with you on having the full virtual driving range but the Mevo will have to do for now.

No. It doesn't measure spin axis.

That's a killer price and dangerously close to my go buy it now price range. When fall comes around and I come back indoors I may pull the trigger on it. The Divot action insert I think is going to be my next purchase. The CCE mat is pretty hard on my arms.

Umm, well, if you measure a driver, it might adjust for tee height. So, there's that...

I just did my android firmware update. Not sure if it was the cause, but I noticed all my shots from previous sessions went zero, so no data now on my previous hits....anyone else have this happen?

In my Engineering opinion, I think the Mevo has preset algorithms with min/max thresholds for spin and launch angle. That's why in the par2pro video that you see the ball speed and club head speed very close but the other numbers were way off. To prove this, you can hit balls without the stickers on the balls and the spin variance even with +/-500 rpm doesn't make that big of a difference as one might think. 4 yards carry between 2000rpm vs. 3000rpm with 150mph ball speed with same launch angles. Hell, I'm not even 100% sure that the Mevo really is measuring anything other then ball speed and clubhead speed to be honest and just not falling back on its pre set parameters. If the $500 launch monitor gets you numbers that 4 of 6 parameters are within 2% of a $20k launch monitor then its doing very well. The only place I really notice the spin difference changes the carry distance is with the wedges. I see 10-15 yards longer due to 5000rpm spin vs 9000rpm. Could it be that Flightscope did the same thing that Bridgestone does with its ball fittings. If 100,000 people hit their 7 iron with this "x" ball speed, what is the average mean of all these shots with spin/launch/carry? Change the ball speed 1 or 2 mph and all the other numbers change and your none the wiser. Seems far fetched but well within the realm of possibilities that its just a ball speed meter. This is why my wife never asks me anymore "what are you thinking about"?

Most if not all radars have to apply filters to the return signal in order to eliminate false returns. We were testing one of our laser weapon systems which required an initial cue to target from a tracking radar. Near dusk every day the cues would become erratic because the radar was picking up every bat, bird, and bug that became hyperactive near sunset. The flight profiles of the wildlife and signal strength looked too much like our targets and the increase in numbers overwhelmed the filtering.

And there lies a huge problem, people trying to use equipment they have no clue how to properly use.

I've received 3 plus unsolicited calls from Flightscope to alert me to updates (firmware & software) and to ensure the Mevo is meeting expectations. Very impressed with their commitment to customers.

 

Unrelated note, curious if anyone has experienced any charging issues? My mevo doesn't charge via the included cable (no lights, no response). I've tried a number of other cables with the same response. Luckily I have an old cable that's working but the Mevo never recognizes that it's fully charged instead just blinks into perpetuity. I've alerted Flightscope and will send it in for a warranty replacement once they have more inventory such that I'm not waiting for 4 weeks for a new one. Anyone else have any charging issues?

If it is truly measuring and not guessing the only thing that should change based on an changing the club is the distance. The spin shouldn't change the ball has no idea what its being hit with. A 115 mph club head, 12 degree launch 2600 spin is going to go the same distance whether i hit it with a wedge a 7 iron or a driver. You don't have to change a GC2 based on the club right?
