2nd Swing Rant (Merged)

I've never bought from there, the one thing I do like in comparison to 3ball, global golf is that you see pictures of the actual clubs you are buying. 8.0/10 can mean a lot of different things, that's worth a bit of a premium to me. That said there are plenty of reputable sellers on ebay who have pics and lower prices.

2nd Swing is demand driven on their prices. Items that generate more buzz have higher prices, items that are somewhat less popular will have lower prices.

Back in the day, I was able to get a nearly mint set of TW276 Ram Tour Grinds for $50. At the same time, a set of Norman Signature Grind blades was over $1000.

Though they have a web presence, the stores are their primary focus. The web presence is almost a sidelight. (almost)

I am not sure about "demand driven" -- it's their used prices on eBay across the board! I just think they would move so much more stock. Perhaps it's what gets "wheeled and dealed" for less at the Brick-and-Mortar. I can honestly say I have never bought a single item from them on eBay and never will. Guess they prey on the uninformed.

If you've been following them over the years, it's easy to see the demand driving the prices. I've seen prices drop when something happens to make a particular item less interesting. And I've seen prices go up when something happens to make a particular item more interesting. :)

The real value is being able to stop in the store, see the exact item you're looking for, and even hit it to check the performance with respect to your game. Not something you can do with Global Golf, fleabay, or anyone else.

This said as a fan of Global Golf, FWIW.

For the person not able to visit the Twin Cities, MN, or the Phoenix valley area, not so much. ;)

I am a fairly active eBay'er for Golf equipment, and I simply cannot undersatnd how 2nd Swing stays upright (I suppose via their brick-and-mortar and fittings, from what I have heard), -- but as an eBay seller, I do not see how anyone would ever buy anything from them. Item for item, they are sooooo far away from other sellers, it is not even close. 50%-100% more than the average completed/sold listings for like to like items. I know what people are going to say, "then don't buy from them", but it just kind of irks me that they are not even market competitive, -- and if you do your research, even for a newbie buyer (which I am not), you will pay far less. Ok Rant over.

I just bought a new in-plastic Titleist 915F fairway wood from them for $99 shipped (I had a $15 ebay coupon that made it an even better deal). It was a BIN ebay listing with a best offer option, and they accepted an offer that was about 25% off listed price after we had exchanged one round of offers. You're gonna have a hard time finding a new, unhit 915F for $100 on the web right now.

I think they're higher priced than others on some things, but lower or very competitive on other things. On BIN ebay offerings they will move down on listed price as long as you dont completely low-ball them. And Ive noticed most of their items ship free, which you have to take into consideration in price listing.

They told me they longer negotiate prices on used gear because it would be "unfair to their online customers". So I've decided to take my very real business elsewhere until they pull their heads from betwixt their cheeks.

I know they are reading this because we talked about them reading this in the store. :rap: Is this thing on?

They're so far overpriced it's obscene. I'm local too and don't even bother anymore...just head on down to PGA SS and get what I want. I have no idea how they stay in business the prices on things are so far out of the realm of competitiveness. Once in awhile I find a mispriced club but you really have to dig. Sorry but i'm not paying $100 for a used SM6 when I can get brand new ones for $100 or less guys.

Guess this is a "your mileage may vary" sort of thing.

Just bought a new (sold as used, very minor shop wear) set of Mizuno irons there yesterday, at what I thought was a very competitive price.

As with many who have commented, I went in to hit a variety of irons in the simulator, find exactly what I wanted, and buy them here on the BST or on Ebay...

They did not negotiate, however - I ended up paying the asking price.

Why is it that golfers get so upset about what a business charges for there products.........It is no different than anything else sold on the planet......Some sell high and make a larger profit for item, some sell low and make their money on quantity......It is quite comical to me to see how many people admit they go into a place to try their products with the intention of buying somewhere else......From a moral standpoint, wouldn't you say this would border on being guilty of theft of service, and if not, why?

It is pretty common consumer behavior across industries. The same thing happened to Best Buy, they found consumers were coming in to check out items in person and then purchasing online for a better price. What did they do? They started offering more competitive pricing, consumer programs, price matching, etc. That is just how capitalism works, especially when things are accessible at the consumer's fingertips literally anywhere. Would it be theft of service if you purchased online, found a better price and returned the online purchase? How about if you went into the store and rolled puts or hit balls when you were just checking things out? Consumers don't have a moral obligation to companies, the companies are there to make as big of a profit as possible off the consumer and as 2nd Swing shows they will stretch the prices as far as they possibly can. Plus I'm willing to bet 2nd Swing is more than happy to have anyone come in on the off chance they decide they need the club right then or they make an accessory purchase.

Frankly, I will go in there with the intention to try out a club, probably not going to buy it because I can't justify it over what I'm currently gaming...but I do that at any golf store whether it be 2nd Swing or PGA Tour Superstore. I have purchased clubs in the past at 2nd Swing but only when their added cost was worth what I thought the convenience of purchasing right then was or their added services were worth the additional cost. In general on big purchases, like a set of irons, they seem to charge much more than what the convenience or added services are worth IMHO.

Yes we could, and we would find the same as i said above.....Some charge more....some charge less......That's what makes the world great....Choices.

So a privately owned business charging high prices for the merchandise that they own and paid for is wrong, but you going into their store and using their clubs and equipment that they own and paid for, knowing you are going to buy somewhere else is fine?

  • 2 years later...

You can get fitted anywhere else (Club Champion, in my case), bring your overpriced build sheet to 2nd swing, and they will build it for you to spec for a lot less ($800 less for full bag in my case) and then take you to the sim to verify results. Unless you are near scratch and want some exotic shaft that only some high end build shops can get, it is a great spot for custom stuff at a fair price.

Their service is awesome. My only regret was going anywhere else to begin with.

Their online presence confuses me. Their clubs seem to be priced really, really high and often in very poor condition. I can't see how they do much business, but obviously they know their own business better than I do. Maybe they benefit from people who can't be bothered to comparison shop.

I really don't see what you guys are talking about. I buy stuff from them occasionally. Sometimes their clubs are priced a couple dollars over what other online retailers are priced at, sometimes not. For example, I'm looking for some Mizuno CLK hybrids. 2ndswing has them for in good condition for $90. That is approximately what they are going for on ebay, unless you like the dragged behind the golf cart look, it's cheaper than globalgolf and I get real pics of the club I'm buying. I looked up some random clubs just for laughs, the biggest difference i saw was epic flash was like $30 more than callaway preowned.

Vs Globalgolf because I shop there too.

Srixon Z565 irons-2ndswing is $50 more but it's 4-GW vs 4-PW.

Callaway Rogue Driver- 2ndswing is $10 cheaper.

Vokey SM7- 2ndswing is $12ish cheaper.

I just did a search on sold listings for each of those clubs and there were ZERO 2nd Swing listings but PLENTY of the usual suspects Global Golf, CPO, ksouth9/quickshipgolf, proclubs, mikesgolfoutlet, golfclubbrokers, etc. Tells me everything about their pricing and how many better deals are out there if you're vigilant.

Why is it that in the golf world, people feel like they can wheel and deal? Do you do it when you buy things at other stores? How much is the milk? $3.49 sir. Hmmmmm how about 2.99?

I don't know what it is about the golf industry that makes people feel like they are entitled to not pay the prices that are listed on items.

As someone who worked in the industry for 8 years, I dealt with it on a daily basis, and I hated every person who continually asked after the first time.
