Jason Day WD mid round - Mom Has Cancer

Hate to be the cynic, but doesnt he earn last place money this week the second he tees off?

Wish Jason and his family all the best (especially his mom).

But, why enter to begin with then.... Take care of the family, and take the tournament off to begin with.

Martin said the only reason Day came to Austin for the Match Play was that he felt a responsibility to the fans, and to his mother. "Truthfully, the most important thing in her world is him playing golf and being happy," Martin said.

See my post right above yours.

Jason did the right thing.

As someone who lost their mother last year to cancer, I can understand what he's going through. Not sure how he's managing to play golf because I didn't play for months after her original diagnosis or her death. My thoughts go out to him and his family.

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face;

the rains fall soft upon your fields

and until we meet again,

may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I was all set to crack a 'time to call Brian Sparks' joke were it his back again, but seeing his announcement took the wind out of me. My dad died of lung cancer, but at 84, at least, his death seemed age appropriate (yeah, there's probably a more delicate way to put that). The prospect of them dying too early, whether family, friend, or pet, seems so unfair and cruel.

But teeing off did earn him last place money, right?

We would be naive if we thought that wasn't part of the decision making process.

You think him getting a check for last place money played into his descision. I can't believe somebody would think that. He has made tens of millions of dollars and you think a check for under $40k played into his descision. Wow.

I could be wrong, but I dont think this had ANYTHING to do with the decision making process. The 10 or 15 or 20K that he will be making is nothing to Jason. I would be willing to bet if he wasn't defending he wouldn't have even thought about coming.

I cannot believe he had the strength to even tee it up. I would be a mess if I was going through the same thing in front of all those cameras every week.

Makes me wonder how long this has been affecting him.

I wish him and his family the best. T and Ps are with them for sure!!

If that 40k helps pay for his mother's treatment would you still think it was wrong for him to earn it? I don't. My father fought and beat cancer, but the financial impact was drastic.

God bless Jason Day and his mother. Praying for healing.

I lost my mom to cancer as well, I couldn't think of anything, much less golf, I got the news at a tournament and, like him, I wd from it and took leave (I was still on active duty) and went home to be beside her, she passed about a year later, I completely understand how he feels and what he is going through, my thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and especially his mom, God bless...

It's easy to say should've handled it differently. And I mean he shouldn't have entered the event. Unlike the Masters, he did take up a spot someone else could've had. However, he gets a full pass with me due to his mental state. Good luck to his family. f*** cancer

He's also the defending champion. I'm sure he was attempting to fulfill his obligations until the situation became overwhelming.

Totally feel for him. I've been through it. One common piece of advice you'll get is "try and keep things/your routine as normal as possible." Some days that can work, other days it just won't. He was trying to keep things normal, and made it through six holes before he said 'eff this, there's somewhere else I have to be.' Hey, it happens. I can guarantee you that money was the last thing on his mind.

Not sure the context but heard on "Out of Bounds" last night a recording of Day talking about no practice round this week, hanging out with Nick Watney, drinking Mountain Dew and playing Call of Duty. Saying your 12 year olds better watch out cause I could be coming after them in the game...something to that effect. Anyone else hear it. From Day's presser this week? Hope he had a fun evening.

Nothing wrong in looking for distractions, when my dad was dealing and eventually lost his battle with cancer, I would do anything to try and distract me and find a quick fix for temporary happiness.

The one time I gave JD a hard time on here, and 5 minutes later he was giving a presser telling the world about what's really going on in his life. How bad did I feel about my post? HIDEOUS.

As someone who has gone through what he's going through I can only sympathise. You try your best to block it out and get on with your life but it's impossible.

As someone that is going thru it with a parent, and has had to sit sideline for operations, treatments and biopsys....there is no way he wanted to be anywhere else but there with her.

He was at the tournament because he felt like he had to be. Either because of defending, the rash he's getting with all the WD's, or becaue someone in his camp made him feel he needed to.

thats the most troubling part of it to me. F$&k anyone that talked him into it, or anyone that didn't try to talk him out of being there.

Everyone has parents, and they should all know better

Wow - my posts got removed. I didn't think they were against any rules?

Color me confused - all the best to jday and his family

what color ya like sparty?

Green, naturally!

Still think it's odd my posts got removed - I know some people were offended, but they also appeared to think I was saying something I really wasn't saying.

Anyway, like I said, wishing good health to everyone, jday and family included.

And, frankly, prosperity for all as well, including easy paydays where you can get them!

Thanks for sharing very well said. Impossible to not be affected by that disease for any family

You shouldnt feel bad as everyone here (if theyre being honest) thought the same thing. Doesnt make you a bad person. We all wish Jason and anybody out there dealing with this horrible disease nothing but the best
