Some Things Wisconsin Golf

On another note, I've got a tee time for Friday on the Irish at Whistling, and Saturday at Lawsonia. I was certainly growing restless waiting for the golf season and it figures to start off with a bang! (and probably high scores...)

I’ll be out at lawsonia as well! Kicking it off first with the woodlands and then wrapping up on the links. Playing with 3 others who have never played there so it should be a treat when they see that course.

I really don’t think carts slow down play, it’s the level of experience & skill of the golfer...new golfers are not educated in ways to maintain pace of play, doesn’t matter if they are walking or riding.

Then you put these golfers on a public course where the starter tells everyone to hit as soon as the group ahead gets 200 yds out, that is the recipe for 5 hr rds all day.

Every private club grinds to a halt as soon as a member brings out a couple client groups of inexperienced golfers.

First off tee times the next 3 days at Brighton Dale Links. My buddy has been walking the cart paths and taking pics and it looks to be in great shape. Sounds like they will have cups raised and all pins pulled. I think they are going to have small little electrical flags or something to show what area the green the pin is at. Tee times look to be normally spaced but every 4th tee time is blocked off to create some spacing. Will be interesting to see how busy it is. I know a lot of people prefer or need a cart to play. The guys I play with generally use one so it will be interesting to see how they hang in there trying to walk and push a cart for 18. Weather doesn't look the best but at this point I am just thrilled to be able to head out there. Everyone else headed out have a good time and let's try to follow the rules. Don't give them any reason to pull the privilege of playing.

I booked my first tee time of the year for Sunday afternoon. Raised cups but the flag will be in. Looks like there were quite a few slots taken already. Just really have the itch to get out and play.

Looking to book a round next weekend at the Straits... they will have normal cups with some sort of ball extraction mechanism and hand sanitizer at various locations around the course.

I'm playing Friday with some regulars. The course I am playing will be no carts, and that is fine, I'm a walker. No driving range/practice area: Okay, I get it. All tee times booked via the web, no walk ups: Cool, I get it. After finishing on 18 please walk directly to your car and leave: I get it but that may be the weirdest feeling of this whole social distancing thing. No handshakes, no cold one ball busting...Just arrive, play and leave. This is going to me different.

Any thoughts on preference for the way folks are managing cups? I'm partial to the raised foam inside the cup, as the raised cup edge seems like a dramatic change from what is actually required to hole a putt (and imagine if you hit the cup edge on a par three...it can't be considered a hole in one, can it?!). And, in all honesty, your ball is still contacting something either way...

I’ve been golfing down here in GA. Lived in WI for 15 years.

Rakes, ball washers, water buckets pulled off course. Course bathroom and clubhouse closed. Pieces of pool noodles in the cup. One cart per player. Only members can play.

The course took this opportunity to aerate and top dress with sand the greens.

Yes, it is definitely different but quite doable.

TIP - I soak my golf towel with a blend of bleach, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol and water. Use on hands and ball after each hole.

The carts are sprayed with a bleach blend. However when I select a cart I wipe it down with that blend I have, soak a sanitizer wipe.

I hope you guys have perfect weather! I’m golfing today, high temp forecasted today 72. ?

I'm curious how everyone is counting what a made putt is when posting scores. You basically have to die everything at the hole for it to fall with some of the shallower hole set-ups. I always prefer to hit shorter putts much firmer to take any break out. For raised cups everyone is just counting if it hits at all? They new system is supposed to reflect conditions, there just isn't a universal rule I have seen yet.

Interesting, some courses have the cups raised and other courses (lawsonia) have the pool noodle in it. Either way i'm happy to get out.

Been there. Played royal st Patrick’s yesterday and they didn’t have anything different than normal golf and on the first hole my buddy grabs the flagstick and takes it out haha

Need an assist with the new Phat Phred Monday retirement rota.

I am recently retired and play at a club in the Milwaukee metro area. Like many clubs it is closed on Mondays. I am thinking I need to start exploring courses I haven't yet played that are within 3 hours of Milwaukee. Over the years I've played most of the marquee courses that fit that description. Not well heeled, but I did get invited to a lot of work/customer golf. For example I've read about how much people enjoy playing Glen Erin in Janesville. That would be a great candidate for my Monday Rota, and I need another 8-10 to round that out. Welcoming your thoughts.

Played lawsonia today. Had 79 on the woodlands with an 8 on 9. 72 on the links. Beautiful day but man that’s a rough 36 holes to walk.

Yeah I’ve been out there and played 54 in one day, walking 36 on the Links (which is a great walk), but the Woodlands? That strikes me as an awful walk...Clearly designed with carts in mind. Obviously that rapidly changed though, and sounds like carts are back, for better or worse...

I would certainly check out Green Bay (thornberry, brown county, royal st patricks), door county (the orchards, maxwelton braes, and peninsula state park).

Northern michigan is one of my favorites, certainly look into pine grove country club.
