Alot will wear a hybrid cleat with with soft spikes and a metal spike in the middle

A better question would be is there any course that allows players to wear them? I haven't seen one that didn't remark somewhere (scorecard, website, sign in lobby) that metal spikes aren't allowed on the course.

Even at those clubs if they host a PGA Tour event they can wear metal. Last I heard it was still about 20% wear them.

Gotta love the clowns on here who claim they need to wear spikes to avoid slipping on every shot. Yeah, it's slipping that causes them to shoot 92.

No Mr McIlroy, I realize it's the PGA championship, but it's our clubs policy that you must wear soft spikes only, so unfortunately we can't let you out on the course.

I went to my first PGA tour event this year at the shell in Houston and I was very surprised how many were wearing metal spikes. It actually took me back. I had not heard that sound since I was in high school.

Had a long discussion about this with head greenkeeper ( I think you call them course superintendants or something over there) who said metal spikes were much better for greens. Not only do they aereate but they don't rip the grass like plastic cleats do.

Lol. I know. I worked as an assistant super for 4 years while in school. Sure the holes arent deep , so not as much help as punching. But somethig is more than nothing. Especially on bent. Spikes if you pick up your feet are far more beneficial than any harm they can do ( planting seeds on greens etc ).

 

 

The movement to shun them came from people who drag their feet and clubs wanting to stop clubhouse interior damage. Nothing more.

Spikes don't aerate the greens. If they did, then there would be no need for expensive equipment. They would just throw on some spikes and walk around the green twice per year.

 

And let's not pretend that greens aren't 10x better with soft spikes. Personally I don't care if someone walks in my line now because I know it's not going to impact my putt.

I would think spikes would smoosh the soil to the side around the puncture and make that area more dense. I imagine real aeration would require the lifting the displaced soil completely out of the ground.

Im allowed to wear them at one of the courses I play only because Ive played there for years and they know I dont go bat-s***-crazy celebrating 36 foot double bogeys and dancing around like a fool. And yes there is a difference between metal and these garbage plastic ones. My swing doesn't change and I slip all the time in the plastic ones, rarely and I mean once or twice a year as opposed to once or twice a round with the metal.
