Anyone going with the black wedges with intentions of stripping them?

Roger

56 and 60 ordered

Can you try and remember to send me some pics once the process is complete? I am "weedless" right now but want to make the right decision on which new SM7's to buy. Thanks!

i think the black held up pretty well over the course of a season. there was some obvious and expected wear, particularly on the 58 that i use in the bunker and out of all the trash, but i wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. unfortunately, the required onyx TI S400 to pair with the black head got nicked up pretty easily.

That’s what I thought, was thinking play them black for a season then remove the black and attempt to get it closer to raw next winter

I love the blacked out new wedges and think they'd be awesome with black shafts but that is a HUGE jump for me as I have always been a traditionalist when it comes to clubs. I hope I can make myself figure out the grind and order the SM7's in black then strip them and love them. I really hope some of you guys that have all the new stuff strip them and post pics.

Any guys on here from the Atlanta area care to share your choice of grind and why? We are known for hard pan clay here but we can also the slop and wetness we've seen recently with the rainy, winter months. I am trying to decide which grinds I will be ordering soon. Thanks for your help!

DG TI S400 black onyx chip way to easy, had a set of them and spoke to the rep they have not corrected it.

Titleist rep said they are aware of the black heads wearing, and have taken steps to correct it. The SM7 is better than the past finishes

Thinking of picking up some leftover sm6 in the black 50 and 54 then get the 58 in the SM7 D grind.

I would just fill in the paintfill or strip the black

Hit a bunch of the different lofts/grinds/bounces in wet conditions yesterday. Ordered the brushed steel - 58 bent one degree weak with s400. Spin was up from sm6. Compared against Mizuno wedges too, Vokeys felt a little softer. Worried about some scratching on brushed steel.

I ordered the brushed steel as well and am a bit concerned about the durability of the finish. Did you actually hit the brushed steel? If so, could you tell how it might hold up?

Half the clubs, twice the fun!

I just ordered the same thing. All the pictures I have seen they look great. I am curious to this as well. They look a little shinier than the previous year similar color.

I play in Atlanta and personally use the following:

52 F Grind

56 M Grind

60 M Grind

I find the M on my 60 allows me open it up and play the shot even on hardpan. When it is wet and sloppy, I need to be a little careful to not really dig it into the turf, but there is enough bounce to help protect. I tried the K for a short while. It helped with the wet conditions, but it was impossible when firm and fast.

what grind would be the best from harder / wet sand??

If you looking for a grind that is specifically for the harder/wet sand look at the L or the M grinds. Our course has the "Augusta" SP-55 sand and can become concrete if the morning crews aren't attentive to the payability of the bunkers. The M is Vokey's "jack of all trades" and if you're adept with the wedge is indeed exactly that. I have no need to change grind types based on course conditions when the M is in the bag... in fact I play a Wedge Works "high bounce" M at 10º which I personally believe adds versatility on 3/4 shots. The L for me is more one-dimensional for the hard-packed bunkers and hardpan.

Tried the brush steel, it is definitely going to show some sole wear

I'm very intrigued by the D grind in a 58. I've always been a 60 guy (and primarily used an S Grind) but I'm changing up my lofts this year to account for a stronger PW and with a 58* being my highest loft I'll be opening it up more and more. I'm hoping I'll be able to demo them sometime soon and see how it performs.

I've got a SM5 58 in L Grind as I like to open the face and our course can get really firm in the summer

Was thinking of getting more bounce next time though as only having 4 degrees can make things a bit tricky in the winter when it gets super soft

Guess I'll go for an M Grind if I get new Vokeys

Agree- it was wet, muddy, sandy. I didn't clean the wedge between a few full shots. The face showed a little discoloration as well as the sole. Still a beautiful club and finish. The murder black just wasn't for me....but would look good in a bag with the black pxg's...

Just got back from a full fitting at Royal Porthcawl golf club. Was a blind test, hitting to a flag 105 yards out, then green side bunker shots.

My God these wedges are pure. I never realised how much difference the grids made until I hit them side by side today. I was convinced I would never move from the K grind out of bunkers, but I was fitted for a D, the first person Tim the fitter had ever fitted into a D.

So my MP18 wedge is 46 degree and have still been playing 52, 56 and 58 gapping in wedges (SM6), switched from;

52 F 08 to 50 F 12

56 S 10 to 54 M 10

58 K 12 to 58 D 12

Also switching from wedge flex shafts to Project X LZ 6.0 (Have 6.5 in all my irons) Only decision now is tour chrome to have in hand in three weeks or wait for the raw. Tim said he has been given no indication as to when the raw is going to be available through wedgeworks.

What were the reasons for fitting you for the D grind over the K? Very curious about the D, if you don't mind expanding on it
