Everyone says calgary GCC. I dunno. Played it and didn’t think it was all that great? Prestige? Sure. But crazy good? Meh

It needs some tree removal (especially 10), best green sites and awesome greens, great set of par 3's, 13 is a really good par 5, and 17 and 18 are two of the best holes in the city if not the province. 9 and 10 do kinda suck though.

Its absolutely my favorite place to play in the city and I do think its the best too but that gap is tighter than between fav and second fav.

Hey all,

Any updates from our southern AB friends?

Been hawking the Land o Lakes facebook page. If memory serves correct, they usually open the gates a week or two before everyone else down there.

Really got the itch.

Here's a note on the Paradise Canyon site.  I would think Coaldale would be close to the same, whenever they're ready to open.  Typically, they're open a few weeks before Calgary

With March weather coming in we will be looking to open the golf course as soon as weather permits.  As of March 6th we are looking at the weekend of March 24th as a potential opening date weather permitting with an outside chance of going earlier if the forecast improves.

Driver: Cobra LTDxLS @ 9º (8.25º) w/ Fujikura Speeder TR 661s

Fairway: Callaway Mavrik 4W @ 16º w/ ProjectX Evenflow Black 70s

Hybrid: Sub70 939x 4H @ 21º w/ ProjectX Black Hybrid 6.0

Irons: Artisan HC 4/5 w/ Steelfiber i95cw Stiff; 6-PW w/ Steelfiber i110cw Stiff

Wedges: Artisan Raw 51º, 56º, 61º w/ Modus 120s (to  be re-shafted with Steelfibers to match irons)

Putter: Artisan 0318 Deep Milled

$178 for 18 with a cart in March is wild.  Awesome track though.

$178!!!! holy shrink the game.

Side note I can't believe how bad golf courses are at letting the public know their opening dates, or I'm just a moron and never know where to look. Paradise's last web update was Mar 6, they haven't tweeted since the 12th and its just a video of the owner accepting an award, FB is a little more active but you have to scroll trough replies to see that they "are hoping to open by the end of the month".

I get that it is weather dependent but I just feel like the industry by and large does a poor job communicating to customers on social media.

Had a student membership at Magrath ($450) when I was down there at the University. End of the year it worked out to be a couple bucks a round. Miss those days. Still get tremors thinking of hole 17.

What’s your favourite down there ?

Played it once. Meh. Not my favourite layout. Was ok. But would have to give it another go now that I have seen it once

I would definitely give it a second go. I'm one of the assistant pros up there this year, so I definitely have some bias, but I do think it is a worthy track. Worked in the shop last year and wasn't that impressed the first few rounds, but really grew to love it. Conditions were very very good last year too. The first 8 holes, in my opinion, are very average, but 9, 10, 12, 13, 16 (one of my favourite holes in Calgary), and 18 are really solid holes. Can be a very tough test as well as the wind is often a little stronger up there and the greens are pretty extreme.

Old style classic course.  I won’t play it again until the new ball comes out in ‘26, as I tend to overpower classic courses.

Roflmao. Good for you to choose to play a ball no one else will play.  Might as well scrounge up some of the balata balls now so you can practice.  <rolling eyes>

I actually would like to play it there, or jasper or banff. Not that I can overpower any of them I think it would just restore some shot quality to those places. If the CC played 6500 at sea level which is what the new ball would do I think it would be awesome.

Yes they did, I didn't either but I had some buddies who did and they said it was quite good. Hopefully make it back out this year but its kinda a pain with their booking policy.

I'm not picky, each course has pluses and minuses.  Heck, even Henderson Lake has enough challenges to make it interesting.  But, I guess I have a special place in my heart for my home course (Magrath), followed by Paradise Canyon.  But I would be happy to play any of the 18 hole courses in that area.

Lol, well joking aside I would like to play there with the MLR ball, I think at our elevation it would make a handful of older courses better. I won't be going to Glencoe and playing the cherries with that ball though I can promise you that.

Ponoka’s Wolf Creek Golf Resort gets new owners

Wolf Creek Golf Resort in Ponoka has been acquired by an Ontario-based company called GolfNorth Properties.

GolfNorth operates 40 properties in Canada, from B.C. to Nova Scotia. They took over operations of Wolf Creek and the purchase includes the Old Course, the Links Course and lodgings.

“GolfNorth is very happy to have a foothold in Alberta, and we wish to extend a warm welcome to members and players alike. We’ve met with principal staff members, and want to welcome them to the GolfNorth family as well,” said Shawn Eavns GolfNorth president.

“We’re thrilled to have been given the opportunity to be the stewards of these two excellent golf courses for years to come.”

The resort was placed into receivership proceedings by way of a Court of King’s Bench order on Oct. 13, 2022. The previous owners had been looking for investors or buyers for “some time” before the mortgage company “lost faith” in their ability to find one.

The mortgage company, through the receiver MNP, put the 36-hole course and RV park up for sale by tender last fall, former resort president Ryan Vold explained in a letter on Oct. 18.

For more information on the purchase or to book tee times for the upcoming season, check out golfnorth.ca.
