Palm Desert CA

Recommended Posts

My Mom just closed on a townhome in Palm Desert, think it is on Monterrey CC. I should have a key within a few weeks

What do I have to look forward to? I know there are a ton of courses, but never even been to CA. I will probably take the family out for Spring Break each year, but looking at timing for the "guys" golf trip.

Right now, my thought is the first or second week of December. How are rates that time of year, and the weather?

Can't speak to December but when my parents were still wintering there, went for many years every March. Golf with Dad and golfing daughter and wife and tennis daughter would attend Indian Wells.

Golf everywhere and you'll find lots of threads with lots of opinions, we played several courses and though we had favorites they were all well maintained and beautiful and we were outside golfing instead of looking at snow. Really hard to go wrong.

Still a town for the "older crowd" IMO but loved visiting and plenty to do nature wise or God forbid shopping wise if not golfing.

If I can play golf, maybe do a bit of hiking, will be a happy man.

Funny, am in Iowa also. She had a place in the Ozarks for years, but dumped that for the winter place in Palm Desert. Good choice IMO.

Thanks.

December is winter rates time so be prepared to see higher than normal rates since most public clubs pull in their income mostly during this time. Great courses out there. Desert Willow courses just a 3 minute drive from there so should you decide to try out other courses near there, there are 2 great courses relatively close

Yeah we typically go in February or March as well. The weather is perfect, but it can get a bit windy in the afternoons. Everything is so close in Palm Springs, all the good courses are essentially within a 20 minute drive of each other and the airport. I really enjoy it, the golf is awesome, and its quiet, easy to get around. We always stay at a friends house right in Indian Wells. It is really just about perfect in my mind.

I may look into Jan-Feb also.

Thanks guys.

My family has a condo in Rancho right across the street from MCC. I would 2nd playing both courses at Desert Willow, Classic club and Shadow Ridge are good ones that are somewhat close. There are some good ones down in La Qunita which is like 15-20 min drive. If you like to hike to the hike to the cross. Youll see the cross light up at night. My wife and I do that hike couple times a week when we are out there.

I miss it. My family had a weekend place in Monterrey from when I was in middle school in 1980 until 2007 when it was sold.

I lived out there for about 8 months when I worked in the golf Biz. When family members all relocated to different parts of the country no one really used it enough and my mom didn’t want to rent it part time to cover some of the costs.

I passed my players ability test there for my PGA card in 1995. Fond memories.....except for the very first ball on the first hole that I duck hooked onto the condo rooftops on #1 south...LOL!! Nice way to start 36 very important holes. Double.

Make sure you drive by 429 Sierra Madre North and say hello for me. My lord I wish we still had that place this year. The winter from hell. I would have been out there for sure.

Enjoy it. It is a nice place to winter. Golf Rates in the summer if you can deal with the heat are incredibly cheap. Early or late summer can be a great time for a buddies golf trip. Just play early and stay hydrated. I never minded it unless it passed about 105. Dry heat as they say. Quite true.

I don't know exactly how it works, but folks with property in that area can get reduced rates for golf at many courses. Those discounts might only apply to your mom, as the owner, but you should do a bit of research and see what you can come up with.

What do you have to look forward to? - Well my friend, you are going to love it. Be prepared for tons of great golf, killer mexican food and just an overall great experience.

1) You're about 20 mins away from PGA West, make sure to check out the courses there

2) You're close to downtown. Shopping, restaurants etc.

3) Las Casuelas is right there off the 111

4) The casino is nearby

5) Palm Springs airport is super close

Snowbirds like to come down during the winter so golf rates get higher but who cares, playing golf everyday is worth it. Its going to be a blast!

I did my PAT many moons ago at Monterey CC. Looooong time ago.

Indian Wells CC is my favorite course in the desert. Of the ones I've played of course.

Which course did you play, Classic or Cove? Have played Classic and it was fun. Got a little boring on the back before a nice few finishing holes.

Palm Desert has a resident's card that allows play at Desert Willow for $50. Indian Wells does the same. They're picky about exactly who are residents :)

My buddy has a house right on the 14th tee of Indian Wells Players Course. He can book either course for $20, and anyone in his group plays for $60. That is a great deal, as the prices are usually closer to $200 at the times we go. If you can get a residents card, do it for sure.

Golf is a given and there are a ton of threads about courses. Some really good idea's on discounts here for locals. Peak season is generally jan- march with should season 2 months before and after. from jun - mid September the temps can be 110 or more so golf gets a bit rough. Palm springs isn't the best getaway for younger kids in my experience. There are a few events around town, good food all over, hiking, malls/shopping, and pools. We go to get away from cold and the kids enjoy the pools but it might not be warm enough to swim in dec-feb.

Watch for overseeding and the few weeks after in oct, november, courses should all be in prime shape by December. April the average high is mid- upper 80's. May is mid 90's. I think you could find a sweet spot in that time frame that hits warm(not hot) temps and lower rates for you friends. December will be more expensive and you could get colder days with rain.
