Absolutely is. To do it in a USGA championship is even more impressive. Did it while walking in a round for the first time in 14 years. Again at age 79. And she was upset about her score. She went and practiced after her round. Go JoAnne!

How does the illegal groove issue go? They discovered before the tournament that her ancient wedge does not conform to the rules. Obviously they still allowed her to attend, just had to get a different wedge I would assume.

 

Apologies for my ignorance, but I don't know whether she had to win a qualifier or something to enter or was she granted entrance through her past merits? The latter would explain why the groove issue did not pop up earlier.

Carner was fit into a new wedge by the host course professional. Ended up being a Vokey. She was not the only player to have a non conforming club.

The 79-year-old legend whittled it down to two wedges, and Guyton adjusted both to match the loft and lie of old faithful. Guyton had the clubs out to Carner before she’d even reached the first green of her practice round. She wound up choosing a Titleist Vokey 54-degree wedge that was bent to 55.

 

It’s not often that the USGA places someone from its conforming department at registration, but with so many players in the field who are competing in a USGA event for the first time in a long time, it seemed like a good idea. This week, USGA officials tested more than 20 clubs onsite. Seven didn’t make the cut.

Sigh. Beyond this tournament--when the USGA awards a television contract, it ought to focus on something besides how much it gets paid. Quality ought to count for something.

 

Yea, the USGA might want to contact Direct TV as well. Went to set up to record Saturday and Sunday rounds on FS1 and Direct TV shows that they are televising the Champions Tour Senior Player's Championship instead of the Women's Senior Open. They don't even know what they are showing. Would be funny if it wasn't sad.

I've got a special place in my heart for these ladies. They were out there in the old days, playing for virtually nothing and doing it all with a lot of hard work and respect for the game...and playing some great golf. I caddied on the LPGA Tour in the '70/'71 and gained a ton of respect for all of them. My employer was the former US Open champion, Kathy Cornelius. Being well respected by the other players, we often played practice rounds with the top players, including JoAnn Carner. That was the first time I saw a 4" long tee and she could really bomb it. She smoked like a chimney, like lots of them did back then. Regardless of what you think about the event, shooting your age at 79 in a USGA major championship is a pretty unbelievable. You can be sure that's never been done before. I'm pulling for our very own Kay Cockerill, an "Olympian" who's also playing really well considering how little she gets to play or practice with her hectic schedule. I think it's a great event and I hope they're giving these pioneers their due in the coverage.

If you are missing this telecast on FS1, you risk missing what I believe is the best, and best-conditioned golf course any of us will see all year.

 

They have had some dry weather at Chicago GC, and the course is nicely firm and fast. I have never seen the greens there in better, purer condition.

 

Best of all, I am seeing the players hit 225 yard 5 woods and 155 yard 7-irons. We are seeing players whose distances match the golf course architecture in a way that we can all comprehend, and it just happens to be one of the ten or so best examples of golf course architecture anywhere in North America.

 

The leaders — Laura Davies, Juli Inkster and Trish Johnson are playing some great golf.

Yeah, they said she had 135 yards and was hitting a PW. Then, Julie inkster was a few feet closer at 132 yards and hit an #8 iron.

This might be the dumbest and most ignorant comment I’ve seen on this forum. I wish you the best of luck in all of the USGA events, especially at the professional level, you’ve competed in. Bet people will be ecstatic to watch you in it.

I went this morning. Got there early to walk the course with a yeardage book. The course is so pure. Fairways were tight and firm, even after the rain. Greens were some of the best I have ever seen. Hit two putts on the 5th green. Perfectly smooth and running a true 12.5 or so.

 

At 6700 or so from the blacks it is too short for a men’s elite event. There are a good number of bunkers that come into play from 280-350 so it wouldn’t be completely devoid of strategy and the greens are the real star there.

 

We didn’t see Davies, but 225 5 wood and 150 7 iron is not representative of the field. We saw drives carry 135-190 and woods and hybrids from about 120 and out. The ball striking and flight weren’t very impressive, but the results were. Dinking a hybrid from 150 and rolling it on the green isn’t a game I’m familiar with, but the consistency and scoring were impressive.

Because it is barely 6900 yards even when it is completely maxed out. It was 6700 yards for the all-matchplay 2005 Walker Cup. I would not want to see them change one more blade of grass, not one spoonful of dirt, for the sake of the current Tour distances.

 

Also, if you’ve ever been there, you’ll know that it has a tiny membership and very little infrastructure for a Tour-style event. There is actually very generous landspace and lots of room to walk, and even to erect tents. Just no space to accomate several thousand vehicles in that Wheaton neighborhood.
