2018 US Senior Women's Open (MERGED)

I am shocked nobody has even put up a thread on this event. As one writer on golf.com (I think) said 'it is the most fascinating event of the week'. I completely agree with him, and this event should have been started a long time ago.

It is also a shame that there is so little TV coverage of the event, the women who play in that tournament deserve to be seen, and a place like Chicago Golf Club deserves time in the spotlight.

There are some great names in this event. My heart string will be pulled by Laura Baugh as I remember first seeing her in a Golf Digest article in 1972. Sigh...

On a side note, I've been blessed to play Chicago Golf Club and it is a true treat. Hopefully the coverage does justice to the square greens, green complexes in general, pervasive traps and historical presence of the course.

Now on a side note, I'm intrigued to see if they forgo the policy of no electronics on the course which means no GPS/Rangefinders during the practice rounds.

I can't even figure out when/if there's television coverage of this. Rats.

FS1

3-5 cdt Sat and Sun only.

That's all? Those ladies and the golf course deserves more coverage. It should be fun watching them play Chicago Golf Club.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest that based on some of the qualifying scores, there will be scores posted in the 90's during the first two rounds. This is a golf course with some teeth and if they don't slow the greens down dramatically, there will be some UGLY scores.

But then again...I'll be starting a new thread, "Can an 11 HDCP beat a US SWO qualifier?"

In a word: yes.

And this is a first year event in a what, 6 or 7 event tour? That Fox is putting them on for 4hrs on the weekend is commendable IMHO.

Much appreciated.

Sigh. Beyond this tournament--when the USGA awards a television contract, it ought to focus on something besides how much it gets paid. Quality ought to count for something.

Yea, the USGA might want to contact Direct TV as well. Went to set up to record Saturday and Sunday rounds on FS1 and Direct TV shows that they are televising the Champions Tour Senior Player's Championship instead of the Women's Senior Open. They don't even know what they are showing. Would be funny if it wasn't sad.

The course will be set up at 6082 yards (subject to change) and play to a par of 36-37 73.

Front nine is par 36 and 2997 yards.

Back nine is par 37 and 3085 yards.

The 4 par 3's range from 136 to 167.

The 11 par 4's range from 320 to 389.

The 5 par 5's range from 425 (#18) to 525 (#16).

Chicago Golf Club plays really fast and with the warm weather we've been experiencing, there should be a lot of roll making this a very short course. But, the defense is the greens. You can hit a great shot, think you're got an easy putt and end up 50 feet away from the hole or even off the green. They can put the pins in some really difficult spots if they choose and you need to be very precise with approaches.

That has to be the reason for the length or lack there of, they don't want to see everything go off into the rough/bunkers, if they are coming into greens with mid/long irons hybrids.

I'm sure the former LPGA players will be grand, but I suspect some of the ams are going to post some pretty high scores, based on qualifying results.

I really don't want to see these ladies embarrassed. Unfortunately someone has shot 53 on their first nine.

And followed it up with a bogey and then a quad on her next 2 holes.

Since you have played the course, what does it play like? Narrow tee shots? Ultra-fast greens or lots of slope? Trees, linksy, elevated greens?

Never mind. Will read entire thread. You have already provided answers.

It's really a second shot links style course. Trees aren't in play often. The fairways are pretty wide for the most part and not a lot of shot shaping is needed. If you're off the fairway you're in fescue but my gut says they cut it down for this event. If you don't hit your approach in the right spot on the green, you're going to have a long putt or chip and there is a ton of contour on the square greens and they play fast.

They do not allow electronics for distance measurements and we only had 1 honor caddie and 3 first year caddies. They could only give front, middle and back and tell you where the pin was. In at least 4-5 approaches, I hit what I thought were going to be solid shots and only1 ended up with a reasonable birdie putt, the others rolled out with the contours or even rolled off the greens. Being that they probably only played 1-2 practice rounds, it's going to be difficult, even for the best players, to know where to hit the ball based upon the pin location.

Yeah-but the 11 will get his comeuppance when he realizes he cannot beat a 79 year old woman.....

I'm glad that this event will at least get a little TV time this weekend. I need to remember to record it. Looking forward to seeing Chicago Golf Club (never have) and some of the legends of the game. I suspect it will even be enjoyable to watch if the quality of golf isn't so great -- I enjoyed Lee Trevino and Andy North's appearance in Madison even though Lee is 79 and Andy plays like a 15 cap now.

Just looking at the standings there are some good players there, and it looks to be an interesting event if it stays like it is now. But really folks, cranking on over 50 year old women who shoot a bad score on a tough course? Really?

Agreed. Many are well north of 60 and have not played anything remotely similar to competitive golf for years. Carner said the last time she walked a course was 2004!

Folks, JoAnne Carner shot her age...79. Wow is that impressive.

Absolutely is. To do it in a USGA championship is even more impressive. Did it while walking in a round for the first time in 14 years. Again at age 79. And she was upset about her score. She went and practiced after her round. Go JoAnne!

https://golfweek.com/2018/07/12/joanne-carner-79-remarkably-shoots-her-age-at-u-s-senior-womens-open/

The Hall of Famer’s gritty 79 is nothing short of remarkable to mortals, but the 43-time winner headed out to the range after lunch to rediscover the magic of her short irons. “Really, I can shoot this course under par,” she said.

Over entitled whiny little cry babies such as the perpetually sulking John Daly should take note.
