Callaway Supersoft and Spin

Recommended Posts

I played a round last week with the Callaway Supersoft ball, and I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of spin I got on shots from 90 yards in. Has anyone else experienced decent short game spin with the Supersoft?

If you can spin it, clearly you're a decent ball striker.

Yes, I can spin a Supersoft an acceptable amount, it's not going to back up 10 feet, but it is possible.

The amount of "check and stop" is what really surprised me. It rolled out no more than a foot or two after landing, and I can live with that. I expected much more roll out. I'll put them in play again next week to see if I get the same consistency. For half the price of what I normally play it's certainly worth looking into....

Great ball, but went with Q-Stars for feel and performance. Wilson 50s are a great ball for the buck too. On sale here for $50 for 4dz.

Regular QStar or the QStar Tour?

I normally play a urethane ball (ZStar...check the signature line...) and that's what surprised me about the Supersoft....from 90 yards and in the Supersoft checked and stopped with only a couple of feet of rollout...I can usually back up a ZStar a good 2 feet with a well struck wedge shot....

What happens with a 7-iron to a full green?

That's the shot where I see the largest difference between even a "low spin urethane" ball like AVX and supposedly "high spin surlyn" balls. For my game and my home course a urethane ball will stop in 2-4 feet but any surlyn ball I've ever tried will run out 20+ feet in mid-summer firm conditions.

I didnt make an observation with a 7 iron shot....I was referring to full 90 yard wedge shots....if I had to guess I'd say there would be more rollout with the Supersoft on a 7 iron shot.

For my game, any ball that I find playable under firm conditions will stop absolutely dead in its tracks on a 90-yard full-swing wedge shot. For me, that's not a sensitive test for distinguishing acceptable from unacceptable balls. I realize other people's games have other sorts of requirements.

If it were me, I'd consider any roll-out on a full-swing 90-yard wedge shot (for me that's just under my stock 52-degree gap wedge distance) such you the couple of feet you observed to be a big warning sign of insufficient spin.

Of course there are certainly Surlyn balls that won't even spin at all with a 90-yard wedge shot. The Titleist Velocity and original Bridgestone e6 come to mind. Or the old 2-piece Surlyn rocks I played back in the 1990's!

Supersoft (or Srixon Soft Feel or Titleist TruSoft) are better behaved than the flat-out no-spin models like the Velocity. But every time I'm given one of them a through tryout I end up having a shot per round or so go scuttling off the back of the green after a well-struck mid-iron shot.

I agree with you 100 percent....The day I played them I hit wedges into the green...it will certainly be a more thorough test to see how they react to iron shots....

I was really surprised at the "check and short roll" on these as I fully expected them to hit and roll out much more than they did...but I really only noticed the wedge shots.

I have noticed similar results with the Maxfli Softfli. I don't need to adjust my game to play that ball.

The need for added ball spin owes a lot to the type of short game you play.

If you use more of a modern-type short game that relies on low spinners, you probably need a high-spin ball. I do not. I play a lot of shots in the short game using the Raymond Floyd-type approach. Chipping, "putting with loft," or maybe lifting the ball higher to get it to stop. Most balls react about the same way to each of these techniques.

I also appreciate that lower-spinning balls hold their line better on mishits.

I have no problem getting at SS to stop. It spins back on wedges just enough and is usually right next to its ball mark with 6-7 irons.

Like the AVX, I will get the occasional flyer off my irons that goes 10-15 yards rather than usually, but I have no problem getting them to stop on greens.

But for the price, I think it’s the best ball out there.

I like the Snell Black a bit more, but for grabbing a quick dozen balls at Walmart for 19.00, can’t beat it.

I'm with you on that.

The Trusoft and the Super soft both check up and roll 3-7 foot after they hit.

With my style of play, if I catch one thin and it still hits the green, it won't go more than 15 feet.

Those Titleist Velocity balls play like a 'hard' Pinnacle, or Top Flite distance ball.

I found one the other day and had the course to my self. I was hitting a Srixon z star and Taylormade tour preferred. We have had a lot of rain and the greens are soft, so they were all stopping and not releasing. But the real difference was the distance on both the driver and irons were 5 to 10 yards on both, maybe more, plus if you like a soft ball, these are the one. I will try them again.
