MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

Gtm - hole 5. Fits my optimal driver shot shape and I have a soft spot for it because I holed out for eagle from 145 or so last year in a match.

The tee box alignment on #5 is one of the dumbest "features" of any hole in the area. I bet more balls have been pumped OB on that hole than anywhere in a 50 mile radius. They would never have built a hole like that if it was facing another hole instead of OB because it'd be a safety issue. Though the last few times I've been there they've at least skewed the tee box markers so they don't line up with the box itself, which they didn't used to do.

I feel like I've had this discussion with CityGame, and he doesn't agree because you aren't entitled to a straight tee box.

On a totally different subject, I found something cool after we talked about the soul patch in front of 16 green at Worthington recently. I was trying to figure out if it was always a soul patch, or if it changed to that at some point.

If you go to google earth pro, there's a bar you can drag back and forth in time to see aerials over time. There were maybe 5-6 in the past 15'ish years, and then one from maybe the 1930s. It was pretty neat.

The answer was that it's been a soul patch since at least the early 2000s, so it's probably been that way forever.

I bet there's some good stuff to see at PB Dye over time. They've made a lot of changes. Though Google Maps doesn't have a recent (this year) photo of the overhead, because #16 is definitely different. They've definitely gotten rid of a lot of bunkers over the years on multiple holes. The bunkers down the right on #16 are now gone. I'm pretty sure the green on #16 is drastically smaller than when I first played it. They just recently changed hole #4 to get rid of the pond on the right side of the green. And I'm sure plenty of others I haven't noticed because I only play it once a year.

Golf Talk Monday : Club championship at PB Dye is next up on The Hive event calendar. For those who have played the course, what is your favorite hole on the course?

No love for 10? Risk/Reward driveable par 4 (if set up right)?

For the life of me, I can't remember 13-16.

I like 10.

Great in a scramble. Not such a "go for it" in a stroke play event, IMO. But, there is still a question of how much to bite off on that hole.

There's a lot of interesting tee shots out there. 13 presents a safe "lay up" or a riskier shot to get a wedge in (slight dog leg, two fairway bunkers, downhill approach).

15 requires a good tee shot (hard dog leg right).

5, Sully's hole, requires a real commitment to something that looks wrong, even if the tee was lined up with the fairway which it's not.

The par 5's there are mostly forgettable, but the 12th green is awesome. 3 is pretty good. 7 is a dog. 7 is a really crap hole, IMO.

I generally dislike PB Dye

This is without a doubt the least surprising thing any of us will read all day.

Vastly different setting, but I'll tell you what PB Dye reminds me of - Tobacco Road.

No... slap yourself for comparing it to Tobacco Road

Seriously slap yourself... really hard

Because they are both golf courses?

That is where any sort of comparison between the two begins and ends. They both have tee boxes and fairways and greens.

Any other attempt to compare they two is silly.

I was playing PB Dye one morning and proceeded to hook my wedge into the drink on hole 11. As I walked towards the cart to head down to the drop zone, a cart came racing down the hill behind me. PB Dye himself (who seemed two sheets to the wind at 9:30 AM) proceeded to berate me for not reteeing. I obliged, hit the green, then 2 putted for my 5. I think I had a realistic chance at 4 from the drop area. Can’t disobey the namesake and architect to his face though!

So there was a drop zone and he wanted you to re-tee? It's PB Dye so I probably would have obliged, but its dumb. I played Richland yesterday and on hole #9 my plan henceforth is 100% smash driver directly at the hazard. If I somehow make it over, great, if I don't, go over to the drop zone and go for chip-putt bogey. I'm all about drop zones.

I'd put it this way :

Of all courses you've played in Maryland, what courses are most similar to Tobacco Road?

PB Dye would be in there. Whiskey, maybe.

And, I'm just thinking it has 2 or 3 holes (and greens) that wouldn't be out of place at Tobacco, whereas most courses have ZERO holes that wouldn't be out of place. The 4th at Queenstown is sort of like a mirror image of that 6th? 7th? at Tobacco (driveable par 4 with the fairway to the right).

The 12th green at PB Dye is probably more severe than the 8th at Tobacco. There's nothing like PB Dye 14th in the state (that I know of). You don't see too many greens like the second, either. . .a big tier dividing a green in half left right, big enough to kick a ball off the surface, not stop a ball coming in, but deflect one off the surface.

PB Dye is also characterized by numerous blind shots, bell-ringers, and some lay-ups and angles that don't make sense till you play it a couple times. Holes that look tougher than they really are. Like you get up on hole 3, and think you really need to thread the needle and get out there and in reality, there's 2 acres out there to hit into (like the first tee shot at TR).

I wouldn't call TR and PB Dye "similar", but I would agree with City that in our area, PB Dye is "most similar" to TR. Personally, I think it's goofy in an entirely different and unique way. It would never occur to me to compare the two. Now that we are comparing, I can see some of the comparable features, but overall it seems forced.

Yeah, that definitely wouldn't happen at Tobacco Road, because Mike Strantz is dead. It would be pretty awesome though, if his ghost chased you down in a cart because you were trying to take a drop after doinking one in the water on 14.

It would be easier to enumerate the ways in which they are different.

The way they do caddies at Tobacco Road is screwy. The guy on the phone that processes your credit card gets a cut, but it's unclear how much. Makes figuring out the cash tip with the caddies harder and awkward.
