Can’t really think of any holes I really like at PB Dye. Maybe because I just have played 27 holes there and nothing really got my attention.

The way they do caddies at Tobacco Road is screwy. The guy on the phone that processes your credit card gets a cut, but it's unclear how much. Makes figuring out the cash tip with the caddies harder and awkward.

Well that was a pretty fun day at River Creek. The course was not in great shape and the greens were beat up and slow. So that was a little disappointing. But it's a pretty hard course. Most holes are very narrow with Oscar Biscuits on the each side of quite a few holes. So many houses right up on the course. I only whacked one OB off the tee. It was a bad break that hit the cart path, but I shouldn't have hit it there to begin with. Anyway, I shot a 99 with a total of 6 penalties, with just one of them being stroke and distance. It came out to a 75 net. If I keep the ball in play, I'm easily under par net. I hit a lot of good shots today. Got up and down from 70-80 yards three times on the day. Even had a birdie on the par 5 4th. Hit a good drive down the middle about 225. Schwacked my 3h to 75 yards short of the green in the fairway. Hit my 56* to 10 feet and made the putt for bird. For me, any day with a birdie is a great day.

 

I definitely want to play more of these one day events in the future. Playing in net events has been pretty fun for me. It's a great way to be a little competitive at my skill level.

Glad you had fun, the VSGA runs a great slate of events. I've signed up for three and gotten rained out all three times this year LOL.

Definitely a lot less bunkers, but I think for the better. Most of the bunkers that are gone were nuisance bunkers that only punished people that hit a terrible shot. IMO a terrible tee shot is it's own punishment without being in a bunker. If your nutted drive carries 240, I like a bunker that's 225-230 carry. Makes you think. A bunker that's 200 carry doesn't make you think, it just punishes you if you hit a balloon slice. I think PB Dye had a lot of these that were intended as "decorative" bunkers. They were never in play for good players. A good example is the old fairway bunker on #12 that's filled in now. That was never in play on a decent shot, but you'd up there if you were 50 yards short and 50 yards right.

 

The 16th green doesn't look any smaller, so I must be hallucinating that I thought it extended way further down in the past. I'm interested to see what all the old bunkers look like on the right side of 16 as well. When I was there earlier this year, it was still a work in progress, and I didn't think the removal of all the bunkers was a good idea. If the grass has grown in and becomes gnarly and penal instead of just "normal" rough, I could be cool with that. Same effect, less maintenance than sand.

You can really go down a rabbit hole with the historical imagery in Google Earth. I was just bopping around to different spots, trying to see what changed over the years. It's fun to go find places you know were built more recently, and see if you can find them before, during, and after construction.

 

I went to check out Bandon, and though I've read this before, it was very clear how much more gorse and vegetation they had to remove to build Old Mac than some of the other courses.

 

Tobacco Road, which one should never ever be reminded of by PB Dye, is completely cut out of pine forest. There's basically not a single hole on that property that wasn't 100% wooded before construction.

 

 

Not surprisingly, many of the Frederick courses were pastures prior to being turned into golf courses.

 

I'll probably get lost doing it again later. It'd be neat to see the transformation of PH #2 via aerials.

Picked up a set of Edel single lengths last night after talking to the seller for the last week or so. Specs and shafts were exactly what I needed. Picked up a 4-SW set and if I can sell the 4i and SW for even a little something on ebay, makes the set price well worth it. Will be breaking out the old iron covers fo sho. Gotta keep up the resale price for when I inevitably "upgrade" in 12 months. Should have them by the weekend...(checks forecast)...sweet, more rain.

What's the flex on the shafts?

They're Recoil 110F4. They play very similarly in flex and flight to most mid-weight stiff flex steel shafts.
