I have an idea for a golf hole without bunkers that's better than Pikewood.

It's probably my favorite one.

18th hole at the Old Course

No, I mean it's literally in my head. It's an imaginary hole. I can't tell you guys anything about it other than it doesn't have any bunkers, but it's awesome.

Just contributing to the best bunkerless DMV holes discussion.

Is it exactly like the Church Pew Bunker holes but without the bunkers?

If so, we're thinking of the same hole.

And it's awesome.

Kind of. It's got the church pews, but instead of bunkers, it's got waste areas.

Here's one that applies to a greater number of golf courses.

I was talking to somebody earlier this year and they said at their club they do a thing where they go out and tee off from 1, play to some green way far out on the property, then play back to 18 green. So it's 2 holes done cross country style.

What would be a fun course to do that on around here? Doesn't necessarily have to be 1 tee back to 18 green.

Need a big, open property where the holes are not surrounded by houses/woods. Blue Mash and Worthington Manor immediately come to mind. Tee off from the 8th tee at BM, finish on 18 green. Tee off on 9 tee at WM, end up on 12 green or something.

Trees could make it fun. What if your option to get through a particular stretch is to play all the way down a hole or two, or try to cut to an adjacent hole by threading one through some trees.

First one that came to mind

Worthington Manor 1 tee->3 green->9 green

I feel like this is one of those things that sounds like more fun than it might be in practice unless you find the perfect course for it.

Like HBD said, I think you need a wide open, flat course to even consider it. I feel like at WM there are enough trees/elevations/dead areas in between holes where you may just end up hitting a series of blind shots to blind landing areas.

I'm not answering your question quite properly, but Falls Road does a similar tournament called the Blasters where they make several long holes (6 or 9, I can't recall). I played it a few years ago with CFree and Eagle, and it was a lot of fun. For the first hole, you teed off on the #1 tee box (par 4) and played to the #2 green (par 5), which is about 800 yards. It ended up being a really good course for it based on the routing.

I've said this before, but in disc golf, there's something called a "mando" -- a "mandatory". You play to a certain basket, but you have to do it by going around one side of a tree. This would be hard to enforce in golf, but you could do something like force a player to hit into a bunker or something like that.

Like 1->3 at Worthington, but you have to stop in the fairway bunker on 2. You could get some serious risk/reward for a shot towards that bunker.

I played the back 9 at Hobbits backwards a couple of times. You face some interesting shots.

My wording wasn’t optimal. My point is at a course like waverly woods where holes are in their own little sliver where you literally couldn’t play a ball from hole to hole. How would you play a ball off the 8th hole at waverly? Through the cart tunnels?

Some trees like the ones between 8 green, 2 green and 3 tee at BM would be fine.

How the heck do you get from the 9th tee to the 10th green at Worthington without denting someone's car in the parking lot? Down the range, across the practice green, and up 14?

Who said anything about not denting someone's car?

Towards 9 tee from 8 green, you'd have to chip/putt/whatever down the path. Or fire one from short/right of 8 green over the trees to 9 tee. Or putt one part way down the path, then fire it over the trees to 9.

Towards 7 green from 8 tee, you'd have to play through the tunnel if you aren't going to allow play over the road. It'd be a pretty easy shot over the road.

OK you win you win. All I'm saying is your interesting concept would have a lot more options at an open boundaried property dedicated 100% to golf rather than one that's layout snaked through neighborhoods and didn't have a lot holes that sat next to each other.

No he doesn't. He's being an idiot. If we wanted to come up with the worst possible CC hole, or CC course, Waverly would be in the running and going 8 to 9 to 10 would be the lowlight of a horrible round.

Fire one from the end of 9 fairway over the trees, doink it off Sully's trash-filled car, couple more bounces in the lot, and boom - you're on 10 tee.

This is about as good an idea as having an open bar holiday party at a gentleman’s club.
