MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

I don't subscribe to the Golfer's Journal, but I usually check the current issue and see if it's going to hold enough interest for me.

I'm getting the current one. This sold me. . .

“In June, while hippies wore flowers in their hair and traded tabs of LSD in Haight-Ashbury, a decidedly drug-free Jack Nicklaus won the U.S. Open.”

1967 : Relive a rocking year with The Beatles, the Stones, Big Jack and sad Arnie.

I'm hoping the author's sympathies lie with the Hippies.

There also looks like an interesting photo-centric article of St Andrews from "Taku Miyamoto, the best golf photographer you’ve never heard of."

Very cool teaser photo for that one.

Bopped around Waverly yesterday. PQ was good. He was -1 coming into 17. He beat me 5&4 and I was playing half-decent. We were 2 of 4 people on the course. Walked it in 2:45 and that was with some screwing around. He birdied 5, 6, 10, 14 (9 iron to a foot). He 3-putted 8 & 15 for bogeys. He hit a ton of greens.

I was a basic b1tch. Hit 7 greens, no 3-putts, and got up & down roughly 50% of the time for a ho hum +7.

And then?

Well, he hit one that we thought was OB, but it was actually well in bounds. He had about 200 in, and hit his worst shot of the day into the hazard. Doubled, and then left his birdie putt short on 18. +1

He's hitting a 3 iron off the tee (probably about 240) that he's keeping in play when he has to. His lag putting was generally awesome.

Any of you bourbon drinkers tried Benchmark No. 8? It's dirt cheap here in VA and is supposedly better than the price would indicate, especially for mixing. That will be my gift for Pinehurst...a $20 handle of bourbon (and a bunch of gatorade for the hangover the next day).

I tried it on the rocks in a store tasting and it was...just OK. I dont mix mine with anything but I would think it would be more than fine for that.

Or, whats a handle of Beam, $25? Significant upgrade in the "cheap handle" category IMO.

Golfers Journal definitely falls in the "luxury item" category but IMO its worth every penny. Excellent long form articles and the photography is really second to none. For subscribers they run some great events - like they had a Pinehurst #4 meetup in September where they did a discussion on the architecture and recorded a podcast onsite there.

Definitely worth the cash.

My "problem" is that I already subscribe to 3 magazines and barely get through those before the next ones arrive. TGJ would become clutter -- I have no doubt -- so I try to be selective about getting them. At least it's nice looking clutter.

Yeah and you're only getting 4 a year so at least you have a few months to read them.

I cancelled my Golf magazine that I got for free from the golf expo. My real problem is the VSGA sends us a Golf Digest subscription - each - as part of our membership fee every year. I called them a few years ago and at least combined the two so we only get one. But even that is absurd for every year that goes by I get two years added to my subscription. I will end up completely cancelling it eventually. By the time I get an issue of GD, chances are pretty good I've already read everything there is between here, MGS and Twitter.

I get that. I somehow have free Golf and Golf Digest subscriptions (i think they come from buying gear at certain outlets). The only time I ever "read" them is when I travel, I just throw a half dozen or so in my carry on. The content in TGJ is 10x as interesting to me.

Golfers Journal is the KFC of golf magazines.

All the other golf magazines are Roy Rogers of golf magazines.

Had my post-chemo scan this morning.

Guess who still has cancer?

Someone else. Not me. I'm all clear.

"IMPRESSION: In a patient with history of Hodgkin's lymphoma, status post chemotherapy: 1. Further decrease in size and reduction in metabolic activity of the previously seen FDG avid lymphadenopathy in the neck and chest, there is no PET evidence of residual disease."

Thanks for all the notes and books and food and things. Golfing and BS'ing with you guys was the biggest distraction. Loved every second of it.

If you're going to get cancer, I highly recommend Stage 2 Hodgkin's.

Well, right off, I'd vote for STAGE 1.

But, I'm going to go with squamous cell skin, or prostate.

Let's all put in 20 bucks and next guy who gets cancer takes the pot. Kent can't play. He can hold the money.

I've been so focused on golf lately that I've ignored my other hobby--homebrewing. I had 10 gallons of stout aging in a single malt whiskey barrel from Old Line Distillery in Baltimore since Labor Day. Just moved it to kegs this morning and should be ready for consumption by Sunday.

I knew I liked you for a reason so clutch!

Domes..

Congrats buddy.

No excuses for sucking at golf now

Anyone have the Garmin G10 or the Bushnell Ghost (or the new one, the Phantom)?

Thoughts?

These are the handheld GPS devices that don't give much more than front/back/middle and go for about 100 bucks.

Our "bonus" Christmas Present, let's say, each year is a $50 gift card for Amazon, and I thought I might pick one of those up. The Garmin seems to have a lot more going on. I still have my sky-caddie at home, but I let my membership lapse and I don't get enough utility out of it to spend $40 a year on membership or whatever it is these days.
