Found out that MV has actually not decided yet. Talk around the locker room for a while was that they were certain to implement it but my guess is that a few senior (senior age and senior-tenure) members spoke up against it.

Of the three courses I regularly play, Falls Road, Needwood and Northwest, only Falls Road #12 has no bunker. Can't say I love that hole though. It's long and up hill.

 

I thought 12 had a bunker. Looking at the aerials, it looks like some pictures have it and some show it filled in. I guess they removed it recently? It was in kind of a dumb spot anyway.

 

It's surprisingly hard to think of holes without bunkers. I never quite realized how rare it is. I play Blue Mash and Worthington most frequently, and neither one has a bunkerless hole.

 

I do like #3 at Waverly. It's a little weird. But overall the way it's set up really makes me think on the tee shot. The big hitters can go right of the junk. The rest of us have some options as to the line to end up in the right spot for the approach. More left gives margin for error if you're a slicer, but it also shortens the distance to losing a ball OB if you hit it straight. Good green that requires you to put the approach shot on the proper half, and when its dry you can play a fun shot off the hill and roll it down.

I'm more interested in the pin rule. PQ was saying that yesterday Charlie Rymer was saying he thinks PGA won't let you keep it in and Damron agreed.

 

I asked if he was just spouting opinions or had inside knowledge and Q said "spouting".

 

I've heard that from a lot of people, but I haven't heard anything "real" about the PGA considering this. I didn't think it was one of those things that allowed for a local rule.

Yeah, there used to be a fairway bunker on the right, but they filled it in. It seems that MoCo has been gradually filling or shrinking in bunkers in all their courses. I guess it reduces maintenance costs and improves pace of play.

GTT: cheating since it's not DMV, but Pikewood National has four of these and they're all great golf holes:

 

#5- short par 3, surrounded by water on three sides and a waterfall.

#9- downhill, lonnng par 4. Blind tee shot landing and a large, tiered, perched green.

#11- downhill, dogleg right, ~450-460yd par 4. green is sloped front to back and is extremely difficult to hold. I hit a full gap wedge that rolled out about 15 yards to the back rough.

#18- Downhill tee shot, slight dogleg right, green is cut out of the hill above you and is narrow front to back.

How often would it actually be worth it to not re-tee and take the 2 stroke drop? Can you be really cunning and say “hitting a provisional” then make a choice after you see said provisional? Even thoUgh OG tee shot was clearly past the white stakes?

I just did a quick recon of places I've played multiple times semi recently.

 

Blue Mash - None

Worthington - None

Northwest - None

Hobbits - None

Norbeck - One (11)

Argyle - None

Whiskey Creek - None

Potomac Shores - None

Mount Vernon - None

Waverly - Four (1, 3, 5, 12)

Turf O - None

 

I'd say each one of those courses has multiple holes where the bunkers add nothing of value to the hole. The two bunkers on #3 at Worthington. The bunker on #17 at Blue Mash.

It's not just OB but also lost ball.

 

I'm a big fan of the new local rule. I hate when I can't find a tee shot I expect to find (and thus didn't hit a provisional). I think it's a positive change that when that happens, I don't have to walk back to the tee. Buy I guess more liberal use of provisionals could achieve the same thing.

Goose #18 at Pikewood has a fairway bunker on the right and a back left bunker if I recall on #18.

DC Is correct you lose the option when you hit a provisional.

 

Also Pine Valley has a lot of holes with no bunkers, but has lot of waste areas.

Just checked Redgate, and holes 4, 5 & 16 are bunker-less. Funny that two of the most reviled holes, 4 & 16, are there.

I have what looks like a weird move with my driver. I hover the club anyway but it looks like I'm picking it up or twitching it - I'm not. I never saw this until I watched Peter Finch hit balls on his vlog and its really similar. But it works so I tried to stop watching clips.

 

I am considering making 2019 the year of never watching my swing on video.

 

I haven't seen my swing on video (other than GIFs from Hive events) in over 10 years. As long as it feels right to me and I am getting the contact and results I want what is the point? I know it doesn't look pretty but I have had the same swing for a long enough time to be able to self diagnose issues fairly quickly regardless of how it looks to outsiders.

I wasn't really taping my swing for that purpose. I just thought the day looked pretty and the wedges were making a nice sound.

 

That's not to say that I didn't look at my swing and go, "I seem to be totally ignoring what the guy I paid $350 to told me to do".

 

It's more of a good reminder than anything.

The guy I was playing with a few weeks ago up there tried to get me with some trivia and said like #12 (maybe) on the blue is/was the only hole up there without a bunker. I never researched if he was right or wrong.
