i need to buy a new tv. ditched fios, got comcast. saving $100/month for the first year, then $80/month for year 2. gotta spend some of that savings on something.

 

besides going into costco and saying "i want that one," can anyone give me a heads up on the newest tech since i bought my last tv?

 

circa RG3sus was leading the redskins to the division championship, so like 6-7 years ago.

If you haven't looked in a few years, plasma is dead and choice is essentially between LCD and OLED. OLED is latest and greatest . Depends on how much of a videophile you are to determine if that makes sense but definitely worth a look. For OLED, almost all panels are built by LG, so its pretty much your only game in town. For LCD, its more of the traditional brands with Sony and Samsung. For value, Visio and TCL are leading the charge. You can get a GREAT 65" LCD for under $1k these days.

I agree with that. A few years ago I got a Samsung smart TV. I don't like that I have a Samsung Netflix, then an Amazon Fire Netflix, then my iPad Netflix. The apps are nearly the same in looks, and things sync between them, but it provides a bit of a disjointed experience getting to it in the first place.

 

Though I'll add that my older Fire TV stick isn't very good either. Performance is really slow. It's a few years old so I'd hope new ones are better now. Next time around, I might just buy a couple Apple TVs to hook up.

Had a similar experience. Now I just use the PS4 for Netflix and Amazon Video. Even on an older plasma tv it works fantastic.

I have two RokuTvs that I really like. I don't have top of the line picture quality, but the interface is more similar to a phone with apps. They're also generally very cheap.

 

As a cord cutter, it's perfect. None of the issues other smart TVs have.

i hadn't decided to switch to comcast yet. my last fios bill was over $200. so many bloat channels i have no need or desire for. 1st comcast bill: $93.15 and i got free installation and a $100 gift card to boot. i've heard terrible things about comcast, but it was an easy install, guy was there before my appointment time, and speedwise, so far, so good.

 

i actually considered playstation tv, but comcast's tv+internet package made it essentially a wash.

 

i've been reading this am, and the qled looks like a pretty good choice on your part. was it $995 with the discount?

I ONLY stream these days. "Smart TV" has always sucked. I have the Chromecast Ultra that I use for most things. I also have Amazon Fire TV.

 

They're both wired into the router (not over wifi) and are both plugged directly into my AV receiver. One HDMI cord to the tv from there, which runs under the floor, and is kind of hidden on the wall.

 

I use my phone as the remote for both devices. It's nice, in particular, for Netflix because you can use the interface on your phone to search and scroll and whatnot, and then you just cast what you find. You don't need to scroll through the interface on the TV.

 

Oh, what kind of tv to get? I don't know. I have a 55 inch plasma that is perfectly suitable for my needs. Seems like you can get one of those rather cheaply these days. I don't have a big room, though.

thanks. i currently have a vizio (plasma) and it's been very solid. the thing i hated about the old LCDs was the "faux-ness" of the image. can't really describe it any other way. everything just looked fake. maybe it was the lack of true black. maybe it was the motion refresh rate being so low. never went deep enough to find out.

 

$1000-1200 is my budget as i'm just rolling my first year of comcast savings into this purchase, so good to hear that i can get a decent LCD for under that. 65" seems way big tho, lol

The faux-ness is probably the "soap opera" effect. I don't think it's a property of LCD's. It's just a setting. You can get it on plasma too. Some people either don't seem to notice it or think that's what the image is supposed to look like. Stuff looks "too real".

 

It's usually in a "motion blur" setting or something.

I go with RokuTV + HD antenna + neflix/Hulu + my parents cable login. It's very rare that there's something I can't watch.

 

The hole is if you're a local sports fan. you can't get MASN or whatever channels play the wizards, Os, Nats, etc. The antenna can get you the Redskins/Ravens on networks, though.

 

My teams are not local, so I end up getting Sunday ticket, mlb.tv, and sometimes the NHL package. I'd need those with or without cable to get my teams.

On the "faux-ness", I definitely noticed that when I got my last TV. It's some combination of the refresh rate and sharpness of the image. I was used to something that refreshed slower and looked blurrier. After a short while, it just became normal and I don't notice it any more.

Yep, we got that and I grabbed a $6 pair of jumper cables from Wally World. That was the extent of my shopping and it was on Thursday night for about 2 hours total time out

What I think is a good story to add the #TVWRX discussion is that my previous TV was a 58" Samsung Plasma I bought in 2010. Domes can back this up, but I actually burned in the Golf Channel logo to the bottom right corner. Any time that corner of the screen would be white you could see their old logo. Finally replaced it about two months ago.

We bought a 70" Vizio on Black Friday. Before that we had a 40" Samsung that we brought from our old house. The house we are in now has one of those two story living rooms (such a waste of space) so I thought the bigger the tv the better. It may be too big although I will never admit that to my wife. This was my way of convincing her to let me mount the tv above the fireplace instead of sitting it on a tv stand. Still have not gained that approval.

 

Anyway, the one we bought seems to be the run of the mill smart tv now...4K, LED, 120 refresh rate, etc. This is our first smart tv. It's cool not needing Apple TV/Chromecast but the Vizio remote kind of sucks so I still find myself using Apple TV to watch Netflix.
