MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

I like the OB portion of the rule. It should be relatively easy to determine where the ball went OB. I'm still mixed on the lost ball portion of the rule. The fact that you lost it in plain sight means you don't know where it is, so how are you supposed to determine where to drop it? I lost a ball on the first hole at UMD when we played, and I couldn't have told you with a 25 yard radius where the most likely spot should be. Maybe it rolled a bit further down the hill. There wasn't a ton of grass there and is still on the downslope. But maybe it plugged in the wetness and was 50 yards back. Maybe it was in the tiny creek over there, but maybe it just rolled further than I thought. Who knows. For matchplay, that's not a problem because I'm basically out of the hole anyway. But for stroke play it would be an issue for the field.

Eagle has spent the last 15 minutes cancelling all his important club "meetings" today so he can spend the afternoon memeing that pic...

I think at that point you make your best guess, drop a ball and move on with it. I get what you are saying but at that point you are still hitting 4. I dont think you are getting one over on the field in anyway.

IMO this is awesome news for some of the stroke play tourneys I used to play in. At least once a round you would be slowed down by a guy going back to the tee for a lost ball because they "definitely saw it" and therefore didnt hit a provisional.

I really love this local rule. And I'm super psyched for MV to decide that are *not* using it.

FWIW the USGA ruling says "This Local Rule is not intended for higher levels of play, such as professional or elite amateur level competitions."

I could easily argue that even our championship flight club championship is not "elite amateur level competition". To me - IMO - that statement would apply to things like the US Am or things at that level.

Once you've watched your foot turn sideways after breaking a tib-fb, it's hard to not visualize it when contemplating a jump like that.

Ooohh, tell me more. Are there photos or video of this? How'd you do it?

Speed skating. The walls were padded but only on the exits of the curves. I caught an edge going into a corner and went straight into a wall. Fast. Foot turned sideways. I have a rod through the fib and a plate on the tib. The x-rays are awesome, but I seem to have lost them somewhere in my digital past.

I got you ceejay. Always happy to share great injury pictures. They may not seem bad at first, but just look at them for a minute.

No x-ray, but here's 2.5 weeks later right before the stitches came out.

Bonus injury. One year prior to mine, a buddy had the exact same thing happen to him playing Aussie Rules.

Seeing that picture actually helped keep me calm when it happened to me. When it first happened my foot was at 90 degrees. I kind of panicked and tried to put it in myself and got it to there, then it stopped moving.

Friend said they waited to knock him out before resetting his foot. The paramedics accidentally reset mine when they were cutting my shoe off.

Not ashamed to say it, but when they put my foot back in place, I pissed myself.

Great pics! I probably would have shat myself after peeing.

I like the new OB/Lost ball rule.

It's not very "golfy" but it's actually kind of a concession to the idea that casual players would like to play by the rules of golf, but sometimes it's not realistic to do. If it affects handicaps at all, I'd be surprised -- and I don't even know which way it would affect them.

Recently had a guy hit one OB and take the drop and I'd much rather have that guy hitting 4 from there than re-teeing.

To be honest, when I go out and "play by the rules", it's pretty much the only rule we'll ever violate. I'm not sending a guy back to the tee on a wednesday afternoon round when we're trying to finish in 3:30. And, often we'll agree -- which I don't like -- to even add a stroke. . . ya know, a "leaf rule" or something.

Also, this year has colored my perceptions. we have spots on the course these days where balls are just flat out disappearing in the muck. You need to look for the crater, not the ball.

Something else I was talking about with City yesterday - when is the bottom gonna fall out on people like this?

I still don't know WTF an "influencer" is. Influencing what, and who?

Nothing against this guy in particular. I mean, he's got a great name, so he must be at least a little bit awesome. But I don't give two shiggles about anything he's pushing. And him having however many followers doesn't change that.

I think we need a Malcolm Gladwell expose on social media celebrity, and influencers. I'd read that.

that's actually the course that me, PQ, C.Freeman and Sully "added on" the morning we played Tobacco Road.

we really liked it. Q and I tipped it out when it was soaking wet at about 7100 yards.

We mentioned it to a group that went down after us and they didn't like it.

It was like 40 bucks. we were all of the mindset that if that course were up here, it would be a $90+ course on the weekends around here -- if not higher. Great mix of holes. Quite hilly.

that's where Freezy and I showered and shared a towel. I went second.

For Jordan Lake, Me/PQ/City/Freezy played it first, then played Tobacco Road, Pine Needles, etc. When I played it with DC/Chief, that was our round on the way home after playing the other courses. I think mentally, it made a huge difference. I liked the course on both occasions though, and it's in a decent location for playing on either side of the trip. If anything, I'd say I liked playing it more on the way back in the morning, as you chop off some of the length of the drive home. Made the drive a lot better than the time I played #2 on Sunday morning.

For the record, I have no idea if DC hated it or not.

I think City hit on it -- it was like a dime-a-dozen course you could find built within a housing development anywhere in the country. Was it cheaper than up here? Probably (I don't recall it being notably cheap, I think it was $55 for us). But it was totally uninspiring and neither hidden nor a gem.

It was exactly the kind of nondescript housing development course that would be $90 in the DC area - but not because it was some standout track. Houses on just about every hole, a couple of really weird dogleg holes too - the kind of 400 yard par 4 where you had to go 200 out and still had 200 left. And they had one short par 4, I want to say it was 260 yards or so - where there were trees and water blocking you out so you had to hit a layup iron and then a wedge into the green.

Its not the worst course I've ever played but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to play there again. I like the idea of playing somewhere on the way home but I'd either hit one of the college courses in Raleigh or even wait and play somewhere near Richmond.

The one thing I remember is the clubhouse being completely closed/locked when we got there.

Oh yah. We were the first tee time and there was no one there when we showed up. Some kid runs up and opens the club house about 10 minutes before our tee time.

Both times I played Jordan Lake were because we couldn't get a tee time at Lonnie Poole. I wouldn't call it a hidden gem. I'd say it's a good course that's one the way to/from Pinehurst.

Those guys aren't influencers, they're advertisers who are not good enough to actually get paid to work.

The companies save an insane amount of cash by playing to the insecurities of social media addicts by giving them free gear that they will feature in multiple of their dozen posts a week.

It's very smart.
