PGA "marketing speak" aside, do you guys feel like the Players is the "fifth major"?

 

I mean, outside of the actual majors, is there any other tournament you prefer tuning in to on Sunday?

 

My short list is Players (and maybe because their marketing has worked). I always watch Waste Management. I actually like THIS weekend's event just because a couple of the holes are so good.

 

But, 17 and 18 are such good finishers it makes the event good.

Phil has missed the cut at the Players 5 of the last 6 years. I'd drop it too if I were him.

Chances are pretty good I'm watching any golf thats on Sundays but there are really few *courses* that I dont want to miss.

 

The Players is definitely one. I think I scoffed at it for a while but being at the Players for a practice round and walking the course gave me an elevated appreciation for how those guys play the holes. Especially standing on the tee box on 18 and thinking about how that tee shot must feel on a Sunday.

 

The RSM is another one. Having played the Seaside Course 20 times or so over the years, its just a place I love watching. I think the finishing 4-5 holes are excellent tournament holes, love the layout, love everything about it. Cant wait to see how DL3 and his brother re-do the Plantation Course which is the second course on property. He's said in interviews that he is using old pictures and overhead photography which definitely gets me geeked out. Also on the short list of retirement locations so my wife actually likes to watch it too.

 

I guess if there's a third its the Dunhill Links.

I almost did but he won last year I think? I always hesitate to take guys that either won the week before or won the same event last year.

 

No reason why, I am generally pretty terrible at this pool lol.

I originally had Xander, then switched to Rors, then JT, then settled on Bubba. He has a great track record here with a few wins. 6 out of 27 have Bubba.

 

I hate having to root for Bubba though. He's fun to watch but I sort of root for an epic collapse from him when he's in contention.

Picks were very spread out this week. Which isn't that surprising with so many big names in the field. I have the lone JT pick which I am pretty happy with. It is surprising that nobody went with DJ. He has a crazy good record here.

i assume a lot are still saving DJ for majors.

But, like anything else, one has to start thinking about "out guessing' the field. If everyone is doing that, it might not be a great idea. Who knows.

So for the Vernal we can’t request partners? I’m dismayed that someone has to play with me and doesn’t know exactly what they are getting into. Either way as long as I’m free, I’m in. I put in for leave for Trolls too.

I eventually went with 2MT's advice to not think too much about this event. Stacked field, tons of big guys, comparatively low payout for that type of field. Lots of guys can win.

Frankly, I think it's absurd to worry about trying to "outguess the field" in the six events of the season (unless you are in a pool where you get bonus points for going "lone wolf') . Last quarter, trying to make up ground, sure. But right now, you ought to just be accumulating points and trying to pick the guy you think is gonna win.

In other big news Phil is launching a Facebook page today! It's that new thing all of the kids are on.

I did just see on Twitter the video of the par that Phil made on ten.

 

Drive into the bunker. Hit his 2nd into a greenside bunker. Hit his third shot across the green into another bunker. Holed out his 4th.

It is not the hole you're thinking of.

 

I always thought 8 got too much hate.

 

I've played it a million times at this point.

Waverly posted it, so I knew the course.

 

I thought it was 14 at first because of the houses.

 

Then, I thought it was 4 because of the mounds. Then I realized it was a par 3 and thought it was 7 (like DC).

 

It's 5, though. There are mounds to the left of 5 (from the tee). 7 falls off. Also, green contours.

 

Also, that pin has been there since October, I think.

i think this is the correct answer. short par 3, like 125 or so. fun hole, usually have a birdie putt here and on #6 before the long par 3 7th and 8th kick you in the nads.

snarky reply: fabb can't get there in 2 after a well-struck drive.

 

real reply: somewhat of a forced layup off the tee, narrow stretch to land it in for your 2nd, danger both sides (no bailout). i like the green complex, but it is a difficult road to get there. lots of guys taking double or worse on this hole. reminds me of #2 at hampshire greens in some respects, another par 5 that *seems* awkward no matter what angle/approach you take to it.
