PGA "marketing speak" aside, do you guys feel like the Players is the "fifth major"?

I mean, outside of the actual majors, is there any other tournament you prefer tuning in to on Sunday?

Frys.com?

What's wrong with #8 at Waverly?

I'ts more like "what's right about it?"

There's not a single decision to be made at any point during the play of that hole. You can't say that about any of the other 5's out there.

I mean, that can be said about plenty of "good holes" (you just hit driver, then iron), but par 5's usually should have some question put to you on the tee shot or second shot. But, the 8th doesn't even have an optimal angle to put your second ball because it's short enough to always have a wedge in.

But, some people hate it because they think the drive is cramped, or because you can hit a driver "too far". That's not my criticism. I just think it's a boring par 5.

The most interesting aspect of that hole is that the green is higher in the front than it is in the middle, so sometimes you need to hit a really good shot to a front pin (or lay up to a distance where you can hold the front).

There's a limited area off the tee on #8 that then gives you a flatter lie, but you have to take on the right side to do it. The tee shot looks wide open, but there's a really limited area you actually want to be in. If you aren't on the flat spot, it can be a tough 2nd shot. I'm typically on the left side rough, having a down hill side hill lie and have to carry the penalty area. It's a hard shot for double digit handicappers, though easier for better players who can reliably be trusted to not fat a shot like that. I can never figure out how much club to take, from 7 iron to 4-wood. More club means less chance of being in the water if you hit it solid, but you can also get in trouble with the trees on the right if you mentally bail out.

I don't think that any of the above makes it a good or interesting hole. But it does make it one of the toughest 2nd shots of any par 5 in the area for me.

Also, I don't HATE #8.

And nothing I said is in contradiction with what Eagle or Sull said about it. It can be a tough second, but that doesn't make for a bad golf hole.

One thing that would immediately make it a better hole. . .if you had a LITTLE BIT more power alley off the tee that ran down to the right, so that if you pulled a good drive you were in the water, but if you really smooch a faydooch, you'd get to a spot where you had a good, flat lie from 230 or so.

As it is now, the "perfect" landing spot is like a 1/100 shot and that is increasingly encroached upon by the trees on the right.

It's like that course in Florida where no one takes on the water through the fairway because getting to the neck on the left isn't worth the risk. No golfer has the skill to consistently put a ball there.

I've only played Waverly 6 or 7 times but this is the first I'm hearing of everyone's negative opinions of #8.

I didn't realize you guys were always so sad while playing that hole.

I think I've only finished it half of the times I've played it. I usually hit a wipe into the trees on the right and then can't find my ball and just pick up.

I don't know, but it must be mighty impressive to dethrone that hole at PoSho with a tree in the fairway atop the list of golf holes DC hates.

That hole does suck. You literally have to drive down to the green to check the whole thing out before teeing off I’ve you’ve never played it before. I thought I wiped one out of bounds and it ended up 150 out.

I like #10 at PoSho. I've played it on my own ball and in a scramble, and it's fun to do it different ways. On my own ball I'm bailing out around the trees and hitting a wedge for my third. In the scramble, I've hit it straight through the trees and hit the green. The trees are tall, and they are skinny until you get it up in the air awhile, so you could play a low stinger and only be at minor risk of hitting the trunks.

It's an absurd hole. But I enjoy it partly because of that.

So for the Vernal we can’t request partners? I’m dismayed that someone has to play with me and doesn’t know exactly what they are getting into.

You know it's handicapped, right?

I mean, you're not talking about trying to sit on someone's lap in the cart, are you?

No, no sitting on someone’s lap for me. I’m more talking about making stupid equipment choices for the round and then compounding that by being not really in form ever. I could bring 4 hybrids, no hybrids, a five wood, a driving iron, and goodness sakes don’t get me started on Putters. I may bring two in case one starts acting up.

Only 3 people - out of 330 - picked Leishman in my pool this week. Thats an incredibly small number for a top player, this would be a good week for him to finish high up.

Looks like Bubba, Xander and DJ were the most popular.

For the non-IG folk.

Big props to gmen for bringing the FrankenTyne to life. I'm excited to give it a roll.

Like a dingus, I didn't pay attention when I was ordering the matte black shaft for it, and picked up a .370 shaft instead of a .355. I don't have patience enough to order and wait for a new one of the correct size, so I just put the original chrome shaft back in. Glued it up last night, so the epoxy should be set by the time I'm home later. Many CSPCs will be had on the indoor putting mat with it this long weekend.

Should be fun!

If you're going to move that G400 max, just hit me up first. Still planning on playing out the season with the G25, but you never know.

Nice little showdown going there. I’ve got a G400 Max en route as well to try out.

Hoping to get out today and play a few holes before more snow.

I watched about 30 minutes of Riv last night. What a fun tournament.

Saw Phil hit DOTD out of the rough, then follow it up with a shot through a piece of bark he couldn't move. He left himself this 12 foot downhill putt that guys were hitting 5 feet past the hole. He had an 80 yard shot almost from the side of 10.

Saw Uhlein lay up on 10 and hit one closer than ANYONE. Freddie Jacobsen with a sick squeezy sand smooch to about 4 feet from 60 yards. Saw DJ hit a tree with an approach and still make par. Saw a chip-in eagle. Some dreadful chips, and a bunch of short missed putts.

Spieth looked like trash when I was watching, but is in the lead as of now. Good event.

Yet people talk about P3. SMH.
