> Yes - Democratic in theory. The difference is if you wanted to pay the $500 at Pinehurst to play, you can. Or you can take your six pack, sit on the clubhouse porch, drink beer and putt on the Thistle Du green for free. Contrast this with Oakmont - I’m in Pittsburgh Friday for a meeting and have to make an appointment with the pro shop to be allowed into the club....Anybody want ball markers??

I'm not an expert on this (although I may look like one) but the origins of the USGA are closely aligned to the founding of the elite golf clubs in the US. The USGA will always be much more closely tied to Shinny, Oakmont, Winged Foot, National Golf Links, The Country Club than Torrey Pines or Chambers. Another item I don't know in detail but that is why there was originally a Publinx championship. You had to be a member of a private club to enter the US Am and public golfers had to enter the US Publinx. This changed a ways back, and those events intermixed, but shows the tight coupling of the USGA to the elite privates. Its kinda why the USGA board is known as the 'blue jackets'. These guys are the archetype of an elite golf club member and talk about how they play at Seminole in the winter and then Winged Foot in the summer. End of the day, I don't disagree with anything you said as there is almost no chance I'm ever playing these exclusive private clubs and love seeing majors played on courses I have access to, but the US Open will always be held at a rotation of elite private clubs, with some publics mixed in.

I think changing the selection process would be as interesting as changing the courses. Your local and sectional qualifier should be based on the primary residence listed on your tax return. All the tour pros don't want to live in Ohio but want to play in the Ohio qualifier? Tough luck. Steve Stricker is 90 years old but still the best golfer in Wisconson? He's in.

Or add an automatic qualifier for each winner of the state open. Maryland Open is in. Take all the spots away from tour players who are getting an exemption for being ranked 60th in the world.

The result would be more regional involvement and a lower quality of overall player. Probably dominated by the tour pros that make it out of Florida or Arizona. That's fine by me.

Don't sell yourself short, X. You'll be playing elite privates, and posting pictures with deep insights like "Shinny with the boys today - so pure!" on Instagram before you know it.

What I'm excited for is Hive member who becomes USGA president and seeing their name alongside Theodore A. Havemeyer, Prescott Bush, and Reed K. Mackenzie: Baddomes, East Potomac Golf Course and The Hive

Peter Hater.

Letting in every state champ can't add more than 70 or 80 guys to the field. Who knows the exact number. What do I look like. . .Emma Boettcher?

There's already pretty much the most open qualifying process available to them. Fake your index to get low enough, apply to the qualifier - and then play better. I dont know that I want 50 more (relatively) terrible players exempt into the US Open - and thats assuming all the states haven an open like that. Maybe a handful of those guys would be good players. But how many Northern states would have "state champs" that are low single digit caps, and nowhere near good enough? #team2more

he also mentions the guy who played with my guy. He was low round of the day, but still didn't make it.

State Open should be 18 at each course on the same day to take place amongst regular play. The one person who finishes before midnight (it will definitely be dark) is crowned DC state champion.

I can't find anything, but I'd be curious how many winners went through the qualifying process rather than having an automatic exemption. I can't find a source that shows how all the winners qualified. An amateur hasn't won since the Great Depression. I can't see a non-PGA-Tour player as winner any time in my lifetime, so I'm not sure how far back you have to go to find that.

What I'm getting at with the above is, if you only want the best players and don't care about the others, why even have the local/sectional qualifying process at all? The best players play on the PGA Tour. Period. Then you have a bunch of "relatively terrible" golfers who can't hack it on the PGA Tour. Maybe you have an occasional guy who isn't on Tour but is about to be, or someone on the Euro Tour who likes to live and stay in Europe. If the point is only to find the best golfers, surely the qualifying process adds nothing to the talent pool. You're talking about the worst players that are in the US Open. The bottom of the barrell. What a waste of everyone's time. Thousands upon thousands of dollars and volunteer hours wasted on a process that adds nothing of value. You could ditch the qualifying process entirely and have no change in outcome to the top of the event.

That was all quite facetious from me. I don't think the point should be solely to maximize the talent in the field. There's value in having an event that isn't just another stop on the Tour. There's value in having an aspirational thing for normal golfers to seek out. It's okay to reward golfers who have 0% chance of winning at the expense of people who have 0.001% chance of winning. Let the other PGA Tour events maximize their talent pool on a weekly basis. Make the US Open about something different.
