MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

Am I right to assume that 2nd swing takes trade-ins at Columbia? I can just show up with my clubs and transact on the spot? I can't imagine otherwise, but its not very clear to me from the website.

I miss that so much. I used to live near red gate and teed off just before sunrise. The sun would come out as we walked up to the first green. In the summer, that might be a 5:40am. Its easy to play a lot of golf if you can get home just as your wife is waking up.

Yes, you can do that. Just walk in, go to front desk. You can go poke around while they total them up.

If so, is there a way not to pay the rack rate at Pebble?

KACD0SEARRWB.jpg

Pebble is definitely not the spot to go if you want to limit your spending in any way. The food everywhere around there is pricey - heck everything in Carmel is pricey. The shops in town, the shops at Pebble, the pro shop - its all pricey. You're not rolling into Carmel on the cheap anyway. Everything else around there isnt cheap. BTW the lodge prices sound insane but nothing in that area is cheap - outside of even the golf. When we stayed there the golf+package deal included two rounds and basically was as expensive as one night of hotel. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it absolutely worth it? Of course it is. But you probably knew I would say that.

TLDR - you're planning a trip to Carmel, Napa *and* Sonoma and want to know if you can grab a round at Pebble on Groupon...

Our Saturday morning game in season is usually around 745-8. The last couple weekends its been nice to be able to have those be at 10 though, not going to lie. Although as City was saying, the flip side of having an early tee time is playing and being home by noon.

I've played Half Moon Bay and we've stayed in Carmel and Monterrey. Love the area. We've done Napa and Sonoma a couple of times as well. Always love going back. We'll see what my buddy thinks about 6 bones for a round.'ll still play it. Like I said, it'll be a once in a lifetime deal.

We will have a blast and be so poor when we get home, I'll be sharing the dogfood with the pup.

I assumed he was kidding.

New forecast overnight definitely shows less snow than they were showing a couple days ago. Which is good since we're looking at one of those runs where it doesn't get above freezing for a couple days.

I assumed he was kidding.

I've heard of a couple of weekends where they've done this out there where it doesn't seem to make sense. Like maybe 3 days ago.

I wish I was kidding. Basically December thru February is shotgun starts at 10am on weekends. Frost gets pretty bad there and we can't start until 10-10:30 a lot, so I get the sentiment behind the move. But at some point, common sense has to prevail and when you see the forecast calls for temps in the 50's by 8am, open up the GD course for play.

So this past weekend, it's taking groups just short of 5 hours to play a round of golf. I think some have quit after 4.5 hours and 15 holes of play. I prefer to play early, so this obviously bothers me because I don't want to play a round of golf from 10am-3pm. It's not why I joined a club. But even if you wanted to play at noon on one of these nice weekends - NOPE. It's like a corporate scramble every weekend when the weather is half way decent.

I turned to my wife and said "Iago." And she gave me a look, like there is no way that's right. So when Ken had the right answer I was gloating, and then I said, look at Holzhauer, he knows he got it- and then when he had Horatio, I realized that no human being can interpret the facial expressions of James Holzhauer.

Also, I think the only thing holding back Rutter was that he can't seem to ring the buzzer in faster than the other two, I felt like he knew the answers to most of the questions.

3 iron loft just think.. now you got an open spot for something else :)

I was so hoping for James to get that final jeopardy last night. He made a mistake and double up the first final.

However, Ken came to kick butt

For better or worse, those kinds of things are also part of belonging to a club.

Plenty of clubs close their greens at the end of the season, and don't open them until they're ready in the spring. So if you want to play over the off-season, you get to play to a hole cut in the fairway, or on a tee box.

It's also an off-season of sorts for golf staff usually. They burn hot a solid 8 months a year.

Some straight up close altogether for a period during the dead of winter.

If you want to play as early as possible this time of year, you've got to go somewhere that depends on being open to generate revenue, and is more willing to put the health of the course at risk to do so.

I'm not going to pretend like I get a lot of the final jeopardy's (especially in this tournament. I did NOT get Arkadia), but I said to wife, "gotta be Iago, right?" and Ken got it and James is usually pretty good in literary trivia. . .like he nailed a couple character names that I'd never even heard of in some category so I figured it was a lock for him. I feel like "Iago" has entered pop culture to an extent (it's the bird in Aladdin) and he's basically the main guy in Othello.

Again, I don't expect EVERYONE to know this. It's still Shakespeare, and not a title character so like, who TF cares? But, it's not something I expected James to miss. It's actually conceivable to me that he thought it was "too obvious" and went off book.

3 iron loft just think.. now you got an open spot for something else :)

That loft is what anyone born before 1980 would still consider a 2 iron loft, not a 3 iron loft. Anyway. . .

they made 4 irons into 3 irons, so instead of 3-P, we started getting sets that were 4-GW. That's what my mizunos in 2009 were. That was 8 clubs, just like when you got 3-P. And the first club was about 21º and the last club was about 50º.

Now, they've pushed the lofts so far that to go through a 50º (which most people want), AND you want a 4 iron, then you're buying 9 clubs. now, if you're smart, you're just going to buy 5-GW, with the AW in there. 8 Clubs. OK, good. 5-GW is 21º-50º

But, here's the SHIFTY thing that Callaway is doing. . .they're advertising the Mavrik irons as $799.99. But, that is their price for 7 clubs. That gets you 5-AW but you don't have a 50. If you want the GW, that set is now $925. For example, the Mizuno's 4-GW is $999 and that sounds a lot worse than $799, but it's an extra club and actually comparable to $925 from Cally.

Now, If I was buying the Mavriks, I'd get 5-GW, but I pay attention to this stuff. I bet Callaway still gets some unsuspecting people that think, "Oh, I have 4-GW right now. I'll get 4-GW in this set." Well, if you get 4-GW, that's $1028. You get an extra club (the AW), but you also get a club you can't hit. . .the 4-iron which now has to knock a hybrid out. I think the actual sneaky thing that Callaway did here was create a set with an AW AND a GW. Nobody else does that and I think that Callaway is playing on people's ignorance.

The "nice" version would be that Callaway thinks people want to buy a 21º-46º and put a separate wedge, like a Vokey, in the 50º spot. That would be being generous to Callaway.
